Best milkshake I’ve ever had

Amazing food. Menu is 100% vegan unless specifically states dairy cheese. The cookie dough peanut butter milkshake was out of this world!

Pros: Milkshakes are amazing , Great service , Food was excellent

Cons: Small-ish menu

Wings are a MUST

We recently moved to Chicago and happened to move in just steps away from this place. We are vegan/vegetarian, and thought we wouldn't want "greasy diner food" all the time. Boy were we wrong. We get take out from here on a weekly basis. The Thai Chili wings are the best thing on the menu IMO, but you can't go wrong with the spicy chicken sandwich, jalapeno fritters, or a famous milkshake. Have not been disappointed yet!

Pros: Huge variety, Cheap and fast, Delicious

Cons: Small location, Closed on Wednesdays

Vegan diner!

Make a reservation! The menu is amazing. The base menu is vegan and then you can add eggs or dairy. The employees were very friendly and the neighborhood was fun. It’s a tiny place, though, so unless you have a reservation, you will have to get the food to go. There’s a cute park you can eat at behind Roscoe’s Bar.

Pros: Awesome menu, All base menu is vegan, Good sandwiches

Cons: Very few tables, Likely need a reservation , The non-sandwiches are kinda blah

The best shakes on Earth!!

Busy location, we couldn't get seats (not a big deal as we only wanted shakes), but they were booked until the following day. So plan ahead if you want to dine in. The shakes were insane, creamier than anything I've ever tasted before.

Pros: Lots of vegan options , Creamy, dreamy shakes , Reasonable prices

Cons: Small space, limited seating

Vegan Mecca!!!

On my solo trip to chicago I went here 5 times in 5 days (one of those times was twice in one day). I live in New York with endless options and this place was so good I had to keep going back. I even brought 6 of their massive cookies back on the plane with me. This place is heaven. Everything is AMAZING. Def comfort food but wow- perfection.
I had luggage with me and they even let me keep it in a closet so it wasn’t in my way (pre Covid). I cannot wait to return when I come back to chicago!!

wish they were 100% vegan

this restaurant is a must when going downtown for anyone, but ethical vegans may be saddened when they see the unnecessary cheese and egg options. everything is vegan unless you’d like to add some cruelty in there, which I don’t understand why they have that as an option in the first place. I do hope one day this long running vegetarian restaurant becomes a completely vegan place. it would sure make the ethical vegans of chicago elated.

Pros: all food can be made vegan, filling delicious food, friendly atmosphere

Cons: not entirely vegan, very busy all the time

The best vegan restaurant hands down

Goo you will not regret anything I promise. Literally everything on the menu is perfect. I don't know how anyone could give this place less than five stars! I guess everyone has their days though haha

Pros: Legit the best vegan food you will find

Takes some effort to find best menu items

The Thai Chili Wings. You guys. Sometimes things on the menu are hit or miss. The burgers can be a bit much (either dry and not interesting, or a little heavy-handed in the strange flavors), and the chicken sandwich is alright.
But the Thai chili wings? Worth every failed menu item, every attempt. (Not great leftovers though so just go to town on them.)

Our favorite Chicago restaurant!

We always do Chicago Diner before or after a Cubs game. It's a nice walk to/from Wrigley. Most of the menu is vegan and it's consistently delicious!

Better for dine in

I ordered for carry out, as during covid they aren’t open for dine in. The hand cut fries were soggy (I tried them right when we got the food, so it’s not like they sat). The milkshakes weren’t as we remembered either. The Mac and tease was great as always.

Pros: All vegetarian, mostly vegan

Cons: Not as great for carry out

Delicious and filling

We ordered the french toast breakfast sandwich, the perogie quesadilla, biscuits and gravy, and dessert. Everything was flavorful and really tasty and the portion sizes were good. Lots of unique options, will definitely have to order again! The french toast sandwich really stood out.

Classic

When we arrived the place was so packed we had to get ushered to some shed because it was raining. It was at this moment i knew this place would be lit af. While we waited they had some hot tea and water for us to drink. 30 or so minutes later our names were called and we went inside. After much pondering I decided to settle on the reuben sandwich while my brother had the poutine. Honestly the reuben was just okay to me. A bit too acidic. The mac and cheese was classic. The poutine tho was lit af. Milkshake was great too. I probably gained five pounds after this meal.

Loved it so much we had to go for both breakfast and dinner during our trip to Chicago. Got the cookbook too so we could replicate those reubens at home. Good cocktails too!

Delicious experience

We ordered our food online and the process was very simple and efficient. My friend and I shared a Reuben and a Cuban. As a non veg eater this was the best Reuben I’ve ever had! Would not have been able to tell it wasn’t meat if you didn’t tell me. The chips and guac were excellent! Guac was a little spicy but I love spicy so it was a nice surprise.

Pros: Huge vegan selection , Friendly staff

An Institution

The Chicago Diner is an institution in Chicago. That doesn't mean the food is spectacular though. The original location here is better than the Logan Square one, but it's plagued by the same problems. The quality of the food is fairly inconsistent and is often very greasy and overly salty.

The desserts though are absolutely spectacular and will always keep me coming back.

Pros: Great desserts

Cons: Very greasy and salty

A Chicago Vegan Institution!

The Diner is incredible! Some folks may not like that it is built around savory, heavy junk food (like all diners are, so it shouldn't be a surprise) but this spot helped me shift to a plant-based diet.

The Reuben is something I've preferred to standard corned beef reubens for a few years now, I might say it was the first sign I didn't need to have animal products on a meal to make it indulgent! The milkshakes are also incredible, as are all the desserts.

I do wish they'd make their wings out of cauliflower instead of seitan, since those don't have the best texture, but this spot should be on most any vegan/vegetarian's bucket list.

Pros: Incredibly good meals, Tasty desserts, Good atmosphere at both locations

Cons: Is often crowded (though that's a positive sign!)
