Sunday roast + more!

The description here is out of date, Canteen does an extensive range of really delicious vegan options. I went for a Sunday roast (seitan based) as well as having a side of Korean BBQ tempeh and both were delicious. Yummy selection of cocktails abd beers too! And live music, board games, and friendly relaxed atmosphere. Also dog friendly.

Pros: The Sunday roast, The extensive yummy options, Friendly relaxed atmosphere

The BEST small plates around

My husband and I visited on a Friday evening. Although busy, we were able to get a table easily. The bar was well stocked with, lots of local choices - always a plus. Also, a proper coffee machine. Dream.

The menu was short but had some really nice options, so we opted to split a few between us. The highlights were the celeriac steak for me and my husband loved the kimchi loaded potatoes. Yes, not loaded fries, loaded potatoes. Absolutely banging.

Having had such lovely food, we couldn't not sample the dessert menus - we had the pecan pie and croissant cake (with custard). Honestly, the croissant cake was probably about the best thing I've ever put in my mouth. We had this a few weeks ago and I've thought about it daily since then. My only reluctance to having it again would be in case it just didn't measure up again.

Best meal I've had in a long time. Extra stars for the croissant cake. I could write an entire review on that cake. It will live rent free in my head forever.

Sunday roast

Delicious Sunday roast, loved the buttery cabbages especially, could have a whole plate full 5/5.

Cauliflower cheese wasn't for me as the smokey cheese didn't go well with the cauliflower 1/5

Tiramisu was fluffy and leans towards the bitter side than the sweet side 4.5/5

Now fully vegetarian!

I remember a time when I could only order a couple things on the menu. And now I can order many things!

Also the food is top notch! Great fusion flavours from an awesome team.

Plus they host a chess night every month, which isn't relevant to the food but definitely relevant to me.

Excellent

The Canteen as a venue for music, food and drink is top notch.

Almost unrecognizable to the place that some of the earlier reviews here speak of.

Currently it's functioning to perfection. The menu is predominantly vegan, dishes are marked otherwise in the case of containing dairy.

The staff are doing a fine job, both in the kitchen and behind the bar.

Orders are taken at the bar so table service is generally kept to checking in on tables and delivering the food.

The food is very creative without being pretentious. Currently the summer evening menu features such delights as;
Faux anchovy mushroom pintxos,
Bang bang tempeh chunks,
Beetroot pakora.

Bonus:
Mostly everything is sourced locally.

Looking forward to visiting again.

Pros: Predominantly vegan, Creative

Great flavours, tiny portions🌱✨

We popped in on a busy Saturday, first time visiting. The staff were really friendly and helped explain the online ordering system. We ordered the vegan bahji main and the fried courgette main. It arrived in two eco friendly biodegradable boxes (yay!) but unfortunately the portions were super tiny. For £8 each dish we felt it was a little unfair in pricing. We actually ended up having lunch again an hour later only a few doors down as we were still hungry! Fantastic flavours though and it had a nice atmosphere. 🌱🤸‍♀️

Pros: Vegan options, Lovely flavours, Nice staff!

Cons: Expensive for the size of portion, Long wait for a table

Always a vegan option

The place has a great, slightly hippy vibe with live music on most days. There are cakes, biscuits and bread for sale. There is always at least one interesting vegan option on the menu. Each main dish comes with soup and bread as a starter. There's also a good selection of alcoholic drinks.

Pros: at least one good vegan option always on menu

Not a good day?

We came there after being recommended the Canteen by several people but were a bit disappointed. I think we might just have picked a wrong day as the only thing they had on the menu were cold sandwiches, so didn't get a chance to try the 'canteen' aspect of the place.

Pros: The prune brownie, the neighborhood (right next to a Banksy), the friendly staff

Cons: Avoid going when they don't have hot food

Good food, always a vegan option

The Canteen Bar has a great atmosphere: It is quite a large place with a big outside seating area and it does not look only like a restaurant but rather like a place where people like to spend their time reading, chatting, socialising and also eating. To my understanding they have a weekly changing menu; when I was there I has some kind of vegan curry with a fried celery slice which tasted very nice. For each meal ordered you get a free vegan soup as a starter as well! They also have good beers and other drinks.

Pros: Great atmosphere, Free vegan soup with each order
