Meh

Food was okay but nothing special. My partner had the loaded flat bread which was just a shop bought flat bread with a few strips of protein on top. The tofu 'fish' was okay. The first beer I had tasted strongly of the cleaning fluid used to clean the line. Was replaced but nothing more. The group on the table next to us left before ordering as the menu online was different to what was offered. Their website still had the buffet listed for a Saturday. Also weird how you order at the bar and are asked to tip before they have actually done anything. Another group in the pub accidentally tipped 15% as they misunderstood the system. I might go back but only to try the carvery as I don't know anywhere else that does that.

Was sorry to not like it

Been excited about coming here for a long time.

Atmosphere was great, loved the place. Loved that its a fully vegan Sunday roast. Portion size was immense. Just, was odd.

Had a soup starter, which was tomato and good.. just very plain, for some reason had a garlic bread side instead of just crusty bread/a roll.
Cauliflower and broccoli cheese was nice! (An extra)
The steak's texture was amazing how it pulled apart, just the taste was indescribable and not in a good way. (Sausages were the alternative, which I should have gone for).
Mash was good, roasties were like aunt Bessie's.
Roast carrots and parsnips were way beyond al dente, soft, floppy and overcooked (the seasoning was good though so can imagine if you got fresh food it'd be fab!).
Was excited to have a Yorkshire pudding for the first time in years but maybe we should just accept we can't have them because, althought the shape was there, they were just cakey on the bottom.
Leeks were left after the first two bites, I just couldn't put my finger on what was wrong but I just couldn't eat them AND I FORCE MYSELF TO FINISH EVERY MEAL haha. I hate waste.
And the leeks were in the side veggie pot, so couldn't eat those either.

Staff were lovely though and were attentive, coming over within the first 2 bites of each course, with me saying it was fine (hadn't tried much yet). I'm sure the tastes and textures will suit others. Just this is the first time in as far as I can remember that I've scraped things aside because "I just really don't want to eat it" overrides "Ive ordered it and I hate waste".

70 miles out my way, oh well!

Pros: Portion size, Staff attitude, The venue

Cons: The food., Pricey.

Great concept

A 100% vegan pub= great idea
The place was busy when we arrived so we were glad we booked. There was a specials board for mains & we were given a paper menu for starters and mains. We had the ‘chicken’ skewers & some vegetable spring rolls, both were served with a small pot of sauce- both dishes were tasty. For mains I had tofish & chips served with pea purée. It was okay, but the tofish had no flavour- just battered tofu, never frozen for texture and no seaweed flavour. The chips were fries, not chips! OH had the bbq brisket & a single slice of garlic bread, which was tasty, but a small portion. We’d have liked a dessert, but the 2 slices left in the fridge didn’t appeal
Service was pleasant , and there was a nice atmosphere. We’ll go back to try the carvery as we don’t live too far away

Pros: 100% vegan, Dog friendly , Close to home!

Disappointing

Over priced and underwhelmed. From the photos we thought it was going to be a full on carvery Toby style….but it was pretty over priced and tiny portions, tiny chicken skewers like proper weeny…mainly the wait time was unbelievable. 40 mins for a coffee which arrived without sugar. Which we asked for but couldn’t make time to wait for and was cold by then anyway. 5 months pregnant with a toddler with a massive appetite didn’t enjoy the food at all. If you have a dog you’d likely get served quicker though. Other drinks all came out one by one. Just disappointed as we had really high hopes, travelled quite a way after a friend recommended it truthfully I make a better vegan Sunday roast myself.. and I’m no cook.
Oh toilet seat hanging off in baby changing / accessible toilet…just a shame and a let down but seems to be the norm in the UK to be fair to them…

Pros: Completely vegan

Cons: Everything else , Slow , Overpriced underwhelming food.

Delicious vegan carvery

What an amazing experience to have a totally vegan carvery. They offer alternative options on a Sunday but the roast is a must! Vegan Yorkshire puddings and juicy marbles steak. Lovely.

Repeat visitor now disappointed

Firstly, I live not too far from here so have been here several times since they opened with the vegan carvery last year. I have loved every visit until this most recent one and reading some reviews, it’s not just me.

We knew the carvery had changed to a roast dinner but were still willing to give it a go because myself and my husband loved it here the many times we have been here before. However, I can’t help but feel ripped off? For 2 (small) starters, 2 carvery’s, 2 drinks and some extra sides it came to £70! The carvery used to offer help yourself cauliflower cheese (one of the main reasons to visit previously) and roast potatoes as well as gravy. Now, you are given 3 roast potatoes, no cauliflower cheese and have to pay extra if you want more gravy.
It seems strange to me to me that after changing to a pre-plated roast that they wouldn’t offer table service. My husband wanted another drink just as our food came so went downstairs and waited 15 minutes to order a pint so when he did come back upstairs, his food was half cold.
The table behind us didn’t get a single item of food they ordered the entire time we were there (they did complain and I believe got a free drink..)
The food is still great, the staff we did interact with were lovely but with the cost of living I’m really not sure I’d recommend the Sunday offering anymore as it doesn’t feel like value for money as well as the service issues.

Pros: Good vegan food

Cons: Cost, Service seemed slow

Disappointing overall

Where to start… 2 stars because the food tasted ok and was all vegan.

However, we experienced a number of disappointing issues, which should be rectified before we would recommend anyone visit.
1) The Barn serves a roast dinner on Sunday and it is no longer a carvery. All their social media should be changed to reflect this as it still says they are the 1st all-vegan carvery.
2) both plates of food arrived and were cold. The table next to us was also served a plate of cold food.
3) I had a hair on my veg!
4) there was no tenderstem broccoli, just normal broccoli.
5) the staff (expect for the young guy in the Creature tee) lacked customer service skills. We were offered complimentary drinks when I showed the wait staff the hair in my meal and said the food was cold. I had to ask to see the manager and request for hot food as they were not going to do anything about it. Creature tee, who was the third to come over, was the only wait staff to apologise, which we appreciated.
6) there were two women front of house, who asked us how our meal was. We replied that we were disappointed and shortly after OpenTable emailed to say our booking was cancelled. This was to stop us from leaving a review there.
7) the art in the male bathroom is misogynistic and distasteful.
8) when the food arrived for the second time, there were no roast potatoes on one plate.

Perhaps most concerning is point 6 as they are clearly and intentionally preventing honest reviews of a negative nature being made public. I would not return here nor recommend fellow vegans to visit.

Pros: All vegan, Food tasted ok, Mabel’s Yorkshire Pudding

Cons: Food was served cold, Cancelled OpenTable reservation to prevent review, Food items missing and had to be asked for

Wish I had have read this before we visited today. They were actually offering free hot drinks for a positive review today! Such a shame. We were expecting a carvery…disappointing. Thanks for the honest feedback just wish I had have seen it sooner!!!

Sunday Roast

In a nutshell, the food was delightful, especially the Juicy Marbles steak Sunday roast that lived up to its hype. The quaint pub setting added to the charm, but unfortunately, the standout service issues held it back.

Upon arrival, we were bombarded with information and not guided to our upstairs table. The absence of a food menu and drinks list necessitated multiple trips downstairs, where we encountered a poorly printed food menu. Ordering at the bar proved time-consuming, with staff juggling drink and food orders.

Opening tabs wasn't allowed, contributing to an inconvenience. Waiting for food became a bit lengthy, and it arrived while we were still awaiting drinks. Despite the minor hiccup of opening a wine bottle myself, likely due to new trainee staff, we had to request cutlery.

Safety concerns, with a trip hazard near the stairs, but the biggest surprise was the deviation from a true carvery experience. The roast lacked polenta mash, featured rock-hard veggies, non-homemade roasties, and unnecessary salad leaves.

Despite contemplating dessert, the prospect of queuing at the bar again deterred us. While these issues were noticeable, they might be attributed to a learning curve or temporary challenges.

Pros: Juicy Marbles steak, Yorkshire Puds, Cauliflower & Broccoli Cheese

Cons: Wait Time, Ordering at the bar

Underwhelming

We ate here after going to see Dippy in Coventry. Had heard so much good stuff about this place but it did not live up to expectations. Very limited menu on a small blackboard that was passed around between tables. We had the tofu fish burger and beef style burger and both were average - almost like something you'd get in a chain pub. The atmosphere didn't feel great and it was cold in there, too. Probably won't go back as we're not local and it's not worth going out of our way. I want this place to succeed but it was disappointing.

Mixed experiences

I have had a previously good experience with the carvery which was great and also had several tasty desserts on offer.
Visited yesterday and was disappointed. Menu was limited and we weren’t able to see it for a while as it was on one blackboard that another table was looking at, and had no prices on it. Husband was told the last beef bourginon had been sold, but a table ordering after us was able to get two.
Chicken satay and mozzarella sticks were enjoyable, however the tofu fish burger was tasteless. As a local vegan I want to see this place do well but it’s been hit and miss.

A bit underwhelming

We stopped off at the barn for a late lunch on the way to nottingham from Luton.

We were underwhelmed by the food quite honestly. This is probably because they had a smaller menu on offer than what is advertised on their website.

The chicken skewers and mozzarella sticks were perfect! The scallops and chorizo were naff. The bourguignon was delicious however was served with a white vegetable mash (would have been better with potato mash) and overcooked broccolini. The mushroom linguine was not what we expected. The menu was on a blackboard and so nothing was explained about what it came with etc. We expected the mushroom linguine to be a creamy sauce however was just oil, something I could have made at home.

I am glad we supported an all vegan pub and we will go here again for the carvery or when the full menu is available.

The staff are really friendly and I would still recommend going here so you can form your own opinion on the food.

Lots of options for pub type food

We went mid week for lunch. There were quite a few options for all courses. Some items weren't available for us and other tables but the chef offered decent substitutes.
The fried halloumi was nice, wasn't keen on the satay starters. Partner had a breakfast but left some of the meat substitutes. I had flatbread. Desserts were nice.

Pros: Lots of options, Decent portions

Sunday Carvery. Do it!

Had a lovely time at The Barn for a Sunday carvery last week. Salad bar was nice, although lesson for next time is leave more room for carvery and dessert! The carvery was lovely - gammon was great, Yorkshire puddings. Yum.
Shared three desserts between us - two cheesecakes and the Bakewell tart, which was my personal fave.
Super friendly service, will be back for more and more and more.

Pros: Yorkshire puddings, Friendly service, Great value

Cons: None

Underwhelming

I have visited dozens of vegan/veggie establishments all over the world and most make an effort to provide homemade/healthy food. I have to say how disappointed we are after our visit to the Barn, especially as we live 100 miles away and booked an Airbnb close by for our visit.
We visited midweek so no carvery, which seems to get all the good reviews.
Our meals came - Ribs and chips with coleslaw and ‘Chicken’ skewers, flatbread with mezze salad. Apart from the 3 small skewers which tasted nice and the coleslaw which was ok everything else was disappointing, flatbreads were 2 small tortillas, mezze salad was a dull salad mostly consisting of jarred olives, silverskin pickled onions and lettuce. Chips and ribs appeared to be cooked from frozen, might have been Oumph brand? It’s the kind of food I’d expect from a pub chain.
I’m so disappointed as I have been so looking forward to visiting here for months, I won’t return again, even for the carvery.

Pros: ‘Chicken’ skewers, Portion sizes ok

Cons: Untidy venue and toilets, Plastic plants and flowers

Great vegan carvery

All three courses were excellent. Choice of soup or salad bowl for starter. The vegan meats on the carvery were nice, but the best bits were the veggie sides. The roast potatoes were exceptional! They let you take uneaten food home which was helpful as we were soooo full. We’d paid for dessert but couldn’t manage it there so bought it home to eat a few hours later.

Vegan carvery. What’s not to like.

We had the 3 course carvery.
Sweetcorn chowder as a start was creamy and hot.
The carvery was all I hoped. The “meats” weren’t anything special but all the accompaniments made this amazing.
Cheesecake as desert was a nice finish to the experience.
