Delicious despite limited choice - Edit
There was only one vegan starter, uzhunnu vada, little doughnuts made with lentils, which had outstanding flavour. Dosas looked superb, but only one was vegan. It was gigantic, made with the traditional filling of potato masala, and the friend who ordered it couldn't finish it. The koottu curry I had was extremely flavoursome, and another friend had a vegan thali that had seven little dishes, full of colour and different tastes. The place was packed on a Wednesday evening, so it deserves its reputation.

Really delicious and distinctive food, the whole place has a lovely toasty coconut smell. Plenty of vegan options clearly identified. Lovely service with a family vibe.

Excellent food - Edit
This place has a great menu with some more unusual dishes. I had the aubergine curry and shared the okra side and the coconut rice, all of which I would recommend. Service was friendly but not particularly attentive.
Read moreReasonably priced, vegetarian and vegan dishes were significantly cheaper than the meat options.
Pros: Vegan options clearly labelled, Reasonable price for vegan food

I had the vegetarian Sadhya/Thali made vegan (I called up ahead just to check it was fine, it’s now printed on the menu.) the staff are very knowledgeable on the dishes.

Vegan Kerala thali: 8 vegan curries! - Edit
Loved the vegan thali: starter was vegan dal soup, then the vegan platter arrived: 8 different vegan curries served with rice and puri. The dessert was vegan ice cream. I would love to go back to try more of the many vegan options on their menu! Nice to learn more about cuisine from Kerala

Great food and service - Edit
Been a couple of times, for a romantic meal (fully vegan couple) and a work supper (non vegans plus me). Worked really well for both.
Read moreThe restaurant is really handily located in Leeds city centre, near some decent bars if you are making a night of it (also near the train station if so!!). The staff are super friendly and keen to help, top service 👍🏼
The menu is great- not all of it is vege/vegan but there’s still a great deal of choice and you don’t feel like you are getting the afterthought version of the main meat based dishes like you can sometimes when going for a curry.
It was decent when going with a non vegan group as I had LOADS of choice but they were not “weirded out” by going somewhere labelled as vegan (like, no one should be in this day and age but there you go 🙄)
The dishes were generous to say the least and the flavours are really rich and complex. As a gluten avoider I fell in love with the appam and the dhosa and will go back for more!!
Only down side I can think of is that it’s a little expensive but that’s possibly also because I wanted to order half the menu.
Pros: Amazing flavours, Good gluten avoidance options , Good service
Cons: Perhaps a bit pricey

Plenty of vegan choices - Edit
Serves meat but vegan options clearly labelled. We had a vegan thali which included tasters of several curries, a mountain of rice, and bread. Soup was the tastiest part. The dessert was a scoop of vegan ice cream.
Read moreTasty food but not the ‘wow’ standard of vegetarian specialists Sanskruti (Liverpool/ Manchester). A little pricey compared to other restaurant Thali meals.
Nice enough food and venue.

Keralan Delights - Edit
Any place where Virat Kohli Indian cricket captain and vegan goes for a meal when in town must be half decent you’d think. Now that Hansas has sadly closed its doors I think Tharavadu could be the place to go for a similar type of authentic dining experience. The food is excellent and prepared by staff who understand the importance of vegetarianism and veganism in Indian culture. I’ve correctly named the dishes we had in my pictures, a superb aubergine and coriander curry and a succulent chick pea and tomato masala dish. The accompanying rice was cooked to perfection and I even squeezed in spicy soup to start with crispy warm poppadoms. With Cobra and Kingfisher on draft what exactly could you possibly complain about.

Good food! - Edit
The food is really tasty at this busy restaurant. Vegan wines are also clearly marked on the menu. We shared a starter plate and a vegan thali - all of which were very tasty. Only down side was that it was a busy night and we were hurried to leave our table even though there was still half an hour before the next reservation. Would still go back but maybe book in advance next time.

Excellent - Edit
There are plenty of vegan options available here, all clearly marked on the menu. Everything we had was really delicious, including the masala dosa, lentil soup (parippu) and chickpea curry (kadala masala), amongst others. There's a vegan thali on offer too, if you like to try a variety of dishes. Staff were really polite and helpful, boxing up our leftovers when we asked to take them home!

Vegan Keralan Options - Edit
Tharavadu offers traditional Kerala cooking, so I contacted them as to vegan friendly options and based on their response prompted me to book a table for dinner.
Read moreKeralan cuisine is quite spicy, so after checking about vegan options, kicked off with snacks and pickles, consisting of pappada vada papadams dipped in rice batter, pakkavadakaya made from rice and gram flour, varuthathu made from deep fried plantain chips and pappadoms. Alongside these were served three chutneys, coconut and chilli, lemon and mango, my favourite was the coconut delicious, creamy and spicy.
I passed on starters, but my husband ordered vegetable dosa, which could easily have fed four and which I could not try, as it contained lentils, but it smelled and looked fantastic, he failed to finish it.
Main course was kadala masala, chickpeas cooked in a light tomato sauce (requested extra hot) and koon mezhukku varatty, mushrooms sauteed with onion, garlic and coconut and boiled rice.
The food was delicious and so different to your run of the mill Indian restaurants and I would be there regularly, if I lived nearer.
Pros: Vegan options, Vegan wines

Great Food: Advisable to book ahead - Edit
I've eaten here a few times now and never been disappointed. The menu is varied and the food is an excellent standard. It's not the cheapest place in town but you'd be hard pushed to find food this good for less. The Masala Dosa is my new favourite dish.

This place truly had some of the most amazing food.
Read moreI literally was not allowed to, and therefore could not rate Tharavadu highly enough.
It is so rare that I find a place where I can happily dine veg at a meat serving restaurant without eating a hackneyed pasta or risotto.
I can't speak for the meat dishes but can say those around me were very happy with what they had while also trying vegetarian and vegan options.
Pros: great for veg and meat eaters alike. , friendly staff , convenient location

Tasty food but slow service - Edit
Really enjoyed my visit to Tharavadu - it was extremely good value and very tasty too. The negative I can think of was it took 45 minutes to be served (we were told 15 minutes when ordering!) and the waiter didn't seem very concerned when I told him we had to get back to work. To be fair to them they were very busy at the time as it was a couple of days before Christmas.

Excellent! - Edit
The food is excellent, not too spicy and nicely served . The atmosphere is also 100% Indian. Almost 50% of menu is vegetarian or vegan so you can visit it a few times and it doesn't get boring. Prices are low (4-5f for currys + 2f rice/breads) and portions very big. Even the starter is huuge. My sister took her leftovers home as she coudn't finish her dish.
Read moreThe only thing I disliked was the fact that it was a little bit too noisy inside (almost all tables occupied) + very sttuffy air! They definitely need to install some fans or open more windows.
