Dumplings good, chef speci not so good...

We got takeaway.
The dumplings were actually pretty tasty, but no sauce.
The sesame bean bao were crispy and tasty.
The pumpkin bao was a bit too sticky chewy, but flavor was OK.
I'm not sure how much they actually make on site....they seemed manufactured.
We both got the chef special, which you think should be great. It was not. I got the tofu one and my partner got a meat one. It was the exact same dish, different protein.
Had minimal veg and no flavour, was supposed to be sweet n spicy... it was bland at best. Tofu was well cooked.
But absolutely no sweet or spicy or even soy sauce.
It was $80!

Pros: Vegan options listed

Cons: Bland, Expensive

Vegan yum cha!

Yummy vegan yum cha. A bit of a takeaway shop so, not the best to sit in. More snack menu items that end up a bit pricey but don’t fill you up enough. But hard to find vegan yum cha anywhere, so it’s great!

Pros: Vegan yum cha!, Good selection, Nice people

Cons: Could be nicer seating & atmosphere, A bit pricey, Need more vegan meal items

luxurious lunch

I was travelling through Castlemaine on Sunday at lunch time when most other spots with vegan options seemed closed. I had been wanting to try the dumplings here for a long time so this was a great opportunity. My partner and I shared the veggie dumplings that were obviously handmade with care - and flair!

They also offered a lunch special of tofu and eggplant curry. Tofu and eggplant being two of my favourite things, I couldn’t go past that. It was incredibly rich. The tofu and eggplant were both deep fried, soft and silky. The curry sauce tasted coconut based, Malaysian style. It was absolutely delicious but quite heavy for a lunchtime meal!

Would have been great to see some side dishes of greens to go alongside the dumplings. I saw on their menu that in the warmer months they offer salad at lunchtime.

It’s a little expensive compared to cheap and cheerful city dumpling joints so a bit of an indulgence but well worth it considering the thoughtful preparation. These dumplings are in a league of their own.

The best spring rolls ever

The food here is beautifully prepared and cooked in sight, so you know it is fresh. Joe is a wonderful chef and Rebecca and the rest of the staff are extremely friendly. Don't forget to tell them you saw them on Happy Cow as it will encourage them to increase the vegetarian options. We are locals and eat there often - or buy from them at the Castlemaine Farmers Market on the first Saturday of the month or at other events where they have their mobile stall. One of our recent visitors said she'd had the best spring rolls she'd ever had - because they are not greasy, well-filled and absolutely delicious. So for a cheap, quick, nutritious and delicious meal - Taste of the Orient stands out in a street of cafes and restaurants.

Pros: simple, nutritious food, delicious!, great staff

Cons: small - but some tables on the pavement

Yummy Yum Cha!

My husband and I stopped at Taste of the Orient for lunch on our roadtrip through regional Victoria. We had read a review mentioning the vegetarian options and were keen to give them a try. The food was amazing- fresh, tasty, not too greasy, and delicious! The owners were very friendly and said they were planning to expand the vegetarian menu soon.

Pros: great food, friendly staff, outside seating

Cons: a bit small, not open every day
