Wow wow wow - Edit
The food was delicious. It’s worth the price even if it’s expensive. The sauces were sooooo good. The sushis were creative and unique. Only thing I didn’t like was the miso soup starter. The portion of edamame was very cheap.

Fantastic Vegan Japanese Restaurant! - Edit
We've been to the first location in SF many many times and always make it a point to bring everyone we know there. Now we have an option in the Eastbay. Most of the items are exactly the same as Shizen in SF but the specialty roles are very different and delicious.

Loved the presentation of the specialty rolls. Looked as good as they taste! Pricey but super nice for a date night out. Highly recommend!

Fast service - Edit
Two of us stepped in and sat at the bar. Our orders came out extremely fast, which was a little problematic since we had limited table space on which to keep everything and felt rushed to finish our food to make room. But that wasn't too much trouble since everything was delicious. I enjoyed the flavors of the eggplant tataki, but it wasn't the easiest to eat with chopsticks: a spoon might have been better. The Barbers specialty roll is the Surprise Ending from Shizen, but strangely was brought out in the middle of our meal. My favorite was the Point Reyes roll, mostly because of the spicy sauce and hearty mushroom in the middle. The grilled mushrooms were also perfect. Would recommend making a reservation ahead of time (possibly over the phone).

Great atmosphere, great food, great service. It was worth the 40 minute wait because we didn't have reservations both times we have been.

Awesome sushi in EB - Edit
This is the sister restaurant to Shizen so if you have been there then you know what to expect. The rolls are similar to Shizen but have different names all have same amazing flavor. There's also a Tane location in Honolulu and it's also great with a huge dining room. Great spot for date nights and special occasions. May need to make reservations on busy nights.

Best meal I’ve had all year. We ordered miso soup, gyozas, the Philadelphia roll, and the Pacifica roll. It was all great, but the Pacifica roll was spectacular.

*Update* we came back and tried the Brussel Sprouts, the Wedge, and the Mushrooms! The Brussel Sprouts were a real crowd pleaser!
Read moreThis is a pretty fancy vegan spot. Everything was delicious! We had the gyoza, the ewa, and the pokai. The ewa was our favorite!
I feel like I would’ve appreciated this place more if I hadn’t been vegetarian for so many years and vegan for 4. I would imagine people who really miss seafood sushi would really love this place and have an appreciation I didn’t.
Definitely get a reservation though and prepare to wait - it is very popular!

One of the things we’ve really missed since going vegan is sushi. We tried making our own vegan sushi but we’re very disappointed. This sushi was HEAVENLY. Textures, colors, flavors and visual appeal made it all wonderful.

Great Food with a bit of Fun - Edit
Went last night while in town and was so happy with the experience. Cozy space with great atmosphere. I've been trying to make my own vegan sushi for a while and wanted to see how the pros do it. Brussel sprouts and roasted mushroom share plates were amazing. Rolls were creative and fun -- two had surprising ingredients like 'fire' and 'suspense.' Tried a couple pieces of nigiri (tomato and okra) and were pleased with those as well. Watch out for the Barbers roll; think of it kind of like 'spice roulette.' I got the spicy piece and really felt it, but it was still so tasty, none the less.

really, really tasty vegan sushi! - Edit
I ordered a specialty roll which was amazing. It was also pretty expensive. When I saw the more expensive rolls on the menu, I thought twice, but decided to go for it anyway.

I had heard about Tane opening in Berkeley for a while and thought I might like to try it. Tane's sister restaurant Shizen in SF has gotten rave reviews for years and I've never been able to get there. Tane blew me away! I went with some friends and it seemed like we ordered everything on the menu. We practically rolled out of there!

Finally Vegan Sushi in Berkeley - Edit
My wife and I are big fans of an associated Vegan Sushi restaurant in SF however parking is tough and traffic can be a problem so it was wonderful to find a place about the same distance from our home but with much less traffic to deal with and easy parking. Another plus is you can make reservations, as the other place there can be a two hour wait. The sushi is immaculately prepared and delicious with some very creative combinations. The presentation, as you can see from the photos, is amazing! A must destination if you love Sushi! Oh, they roasted Brussels Sprout appetizer is to die for!
