We ordered takeout from Takara on a recent trip to Marathon. As other reviews have said, it wasn’t the best Thai food I’ve ever had but it was fine. We got the Panang curry and summer rolls, which were good but the lemongrass chili tofu sauté was just okay. Also, as other reviews have said, plan a little extra time here - our takeout order took an hour to get ready, which they told us on the phone so we just hung out until then.
Lots of vegan options. Pretty good Thai food. The server was friendly, but didn’t bother to ttell us that it would be an hour and a half wait for food AFTER we ordered. One hour to receive miso soup, and a couple other apps, and another half hour to receive the entrées.
We thought the long wait must’ve been because it was Friday night.
This small restaurant is right across from the marina where our boat was moored for a couple of days and the food was pretty good, so we went back the next night again, and there was not one customer in the restaurant. This time we specifically asked how long it would be to get our food. The waitress said about 35 minutes and that there were many tickets ahead of ours. (I think they give priority to take out orders.) We said we wanted to make sure that it wouldn’t be longer than 35 minutes and the waitress got rude. Her attitude was that she didn’t care at all, so we left and went to the pizza place next door. No vegan cheese but good pizza and very nice friendly staff.
My wife and I were staying in Marathon for a week, and did not really consider just how scarce vegan options were on the island. Luckily, we found Takara Thai House! Our waitress, Mandy (I think) was vegetarian herself and was EXTREMELY helpful in letting us know what was and wasn't vegan.
The food itself is pretty good, but not great. But hey, this isn't NYC so it definitely exceeded my expectations for the Florida Keys. Cheap beer too!
