I had the Avacado & Plantain Sandwich which is a combination that works well together. Great vibe and wonderful vegan food.

Extremely delicious and healthy - Edit
I have been meaning to try this place for a while. It is SO good. The food is all made with healthy, fresh ingredients. Everything I tried is extremely flavorful. You can get salads, or smoothies, as well as many hot dish options. They also sell baked goods. All vegan, and (if this matters to you, it does not matter to me!) soy- free. There is a big variety of menu options, considering how small the place is. Staff was warm and lovely. The only downside is that they do seem to have irregular opening hours. We tried to go at noon on a Monday and it was closed until 1 PM. (But I don’t think it is supposed to be closed at noon on Mondays normally.)

Local business vegan first - Edit
This place is a testament to local businesses that focus on vegan food.
Read moreIt's laid back, and it's home style cooking. It's good. It's fresh. It's vegan. They label if there's soy or gluten. It's nice.
Everything is vegan. Very nice.
The prices are fair for a local small business. You can choose main entrees like chik'n, chickpeas and ital stew. They also have wraps, juices, smoothies, sides and some baked goods (from Sweet N Natural for now). The food sides like rice and peas, fried plantains and callaloo salad are available in small or large sizes. The food is good and filling. I really liked the callaloo salad!
Support local businesses! This place is cute!
Pros: All vegan, Marks menu for gluten-free and soy-free
Cons: Needs more raw food

Jamaican Vegan food - Edit
We stumbled upon Sweet Sosumba on uber eats and decided to give it a try. I’m rating Sweet Sosumba “Fair” only for two reasons, 1. It wasn’t spicy enough for me. 2. It felt very pricey for the serving sizes (specifically the plantains)
Read moreOn the plus side the staff was super sweet and the smoothies were fresh, but I want to be honest so that this business grows and thrives!
I ordered the jerk ital stew which was labeled spicy, but it wasn’t very spicy. I want my jerk so spicy I have to breath through my mouth. I think next time I’ll just ask for it to be spicier. The brown rice and peas was a healthy alternative to traditional rice and peas.
I want to go back and try some other dishes so we can see local businesses grow and thrive.
Pros: Traditional Jamaican options. , Lots of smoothies , Super kind staff
Cons: Pricey

Vegan Food with Love - Edit
When I think Caribbean/Jamaican cuisine, I don't always think healthy, but this food definitely seems to be! It's tasty, fresh, and not bogged down by excess salt and oil. I do like spicy, so I always add the hot sauce they have to my dishes.
Read moreI think by my second visit, the owner knew me by name. I've let a month or two pass between visits, and somehow she still remembers when I walk in.
The vibe is friendly and slow-paced, so take some time to relax, enjoy the music and the atmosphere, and get ready for some tasty, nutritious food. With Sunrise opening a second location nearby, NuVegan a few blocks down the street, and a few other places with some vegan options, Georgia Ave is becoming a nice vegan-friendly destination.
Pros: Healthy, Fresh, Friendly
Cons: Limited selection, Pricey (but normal for the area), Slow (but I don't mind)

Highly recommended! - Edit
The jerk chick’n was delicious, perfectly spiced. My daughter particularly loved the music and her sweet plantains with avocado and mango berry smoothie. Great service and ambiance. I’m thinking about going back for lunch today!

Give me that curry! - Amazing and friendly - Edit
As seen below, I'm redacting my previous review, as I made the trip over to Sweet so-sum-ba with my girlfriend, and we had a great experience and I want to publicly apologize for my harshness last time.
Read moreWe were greeted after going to another vegan restaurant and having a little snafu with their "policies" regarding their usage of only take-out containers made of plastic while eating in (hint: trying to be less wasteful), by whom we found out was the owner of SS.
They have a nice selection of different veganized Jamaican delicacies and maybe even in the future vegan Oxtail (maybe...). Their prices are totally fair, and they even have vegan desserts made by a bakery in NE region of DC, along with different juices, smoothies, etc.
I had the Jerk Chicken, and I really enjoyed it, it was spiced very well, a lot of flavor AND heat, and the texture of the "chicken" was fairly mushy, but also palatable. It, along with all of their other dishes are made soy free.
My significant other had the curry chicken, and I really enjoyed the little bit I shared with her, the curry was so good, I would love to see their recipe and replicate.
While I didn't get any desserts from there, mainly cause it was in plastic, it looked amazing, and next time I'll try a smoothie.
I just want to say that the owner is incredibly nice and apologized for the mishap on our previous trip over, which I believe she's checking to confirm the hours are correct across the board (Google, Happy Cow, etc.). We chatted for a bit after we ate, and I appreciated her, and her employee who was there at the time's candor.
I also want to say the place is decorated with many black historic figures, Jamaican/Caribbean and otherwise, along with books to read, chess/checkers, reggae on the radio, and a coziness that is reminiscent of home. Which my girlfriend can attest to the flavor of the food being the same growing up in a Jamaican household.
Godspeed Sweet So-sum-ba

PREVIOUS REVIEW - REDACTED! -
Place was closed on a Sunday at 2PM, with the sign saying open on the door. No posted hours on the door. Frustrating to go somewhere and spend time in transit.
Side note: this happened to me in Toronto, Canada also at a jamaican restaurant, why does this only happen with vegan jamaican restaurants lol
Updated from previous review on 2018-10-21
Pros: Soy free, delicious and tastes like home, Inexpensive, Cozy, and friendly service
Cons: Closed on Sunday, Usage of plastic for their desserts and to-go cups
