excellent food

had a great meal here, tasty and ample serving, helpful staff, had food cooked fresh , a bit slow but was worth the wait, and cheap as anything, excellent range of home made drinks

Pros: Taste, Price, Ambience

Cons: Bit slow

Harlem gem

this is one of north Manhattan's truly special food destinations... I've never, ever had a bad meal there over the years. worth taking the trip - not for the ambiance, but for the authentic, seemingly magically infused Ital food and fresh homemade ginger beer.

Pros: amazingly delicious, authentic

Cons: a bit far, small

Tasty food, otherwise mediocre

Strictly Roots sells excellent and mostly vegan (honey in some desserts and drinks) food. I was quite impressed by at how tasty it was. On the other hand, the service was just ok. This is a place where locals eat; I'm not going to lie, I felt a little bit unwelcome from the time I walked in the door. Prices are cheap but portions are fairly small. All in all, it's still worth a visit.

Pros: Very tasty food, Cheap

Cons: Portions on the small side, Service was just ok

It's very likely that the unwelcome feeling was completely imagined... these folks love to get customers from all over, they're just not in your face about it.

so-so

the atmosphere was very friendly, but unfortunalety the food wasn't that great. i got something with beans and rice and it was pretty tasteless. i also ordered a lemonade, and either they accidently gave me an apple juice instead or their lemonade tasted suspiciously like applejuice.

when i get around again, i would like to give this place another chance.

Pros: inexpensive, friendly

Cons: food not great

Cheap, friendly and tasty

Strictly Roots fills the need for a vegan soul food restaurant in Harlem. The service was friendly, but a bit slow. I was impressed with the taste of their buffet items, especially the tvp pasta and the fried tofu filets. Their vegan mac and cheese wasn't so great, however, and tasted more like bell peppers and water than anything else. Prices are extremely low (most items are under $4-5) and portion sizes are good.

Pros: Cheap, Location, Fills a food niche

Cons: Slow service, Ambience

Ital vegan food in Harlem

Strictly Roots is similar to alot of vegetarian Ital places in nearby Crown Heights - roots, organic, veg dining with an atmosphere that is more functional than aesthetic. there is a revolving menu that usually includes 4-5 entree selections, which may include peas and rice, tofu, seitan, and plantains, and is served cafeteria style. the homemade vegan cornbread is incredible, as are the vegan desserts and homemade ginger beer and sorrel. one of my favorite spots in manhattan, and definitely one of the more affordable ones. easily accessible via the A or C trains and a short walk.

Pros: atmosphere, affordability, healthy healthy healthy
