Satisfying Food but Mediocre Service - Edit
I had originally trekked to Middletown for some vegan donuts from Neil’s, but it was Monday and they were closed, and so were my other favorite vegan businesses in town. I did some research and found this place had a vegan breakfast option, so I figured it was worth a shot.
Read moreStory and Soil is a coffee bar inside of Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore. It is quaint and cute in appearance and I saw the clearly labeled vegan burrito on the menu which was reassuring.
I asked and they didn’t have any vegan pastries available. I was a little disappointed but I settled with the vegan burrito and an oat milk matcha latte. I perused the book store while waiting a few minutes for my order. There wasn’t much of a wait time, which was great!
I sat down and enjoyed my burrito. It was mostly a turmeric tofu scramble, alongside a vegan sausage and cheese, accompanied by an aioli and pickled onions. I’m assuming everything was made in-house, which was impressive. I was also pleased that it was a protein-filled option. Most places just serve some version of toast for breakfast.
The customer service definitely left a lot to be desired. It was purely transactional, there was little to no eye contact and I didn’t feel very welcomed. I said “Thank you!” before leaving and none of the three employees responded, smiled or even looked up at me.
The price was a little on the expensive side. I paid $25 for a small burrito and a small matcha, with tip. I don’t think I would go out of my way to come back— but if for some reason, I found myself here with a friend, I would order the burrito again.
