All vegan, all fabulous. - Edit
I'd heard of Square Roots and finally got to visit. I actually didn't realise at first that it was fully vegan, so was delighted when the penny dropped.
Read moreWe opted for the Pastrami and Cheese toasted ciabatta and a feta, sundried tomato and chilli jam on granary roll. Followed closely with the Bakewell muffin and an Apple Crumble and Custard muffin. We sat out in the sunshine and enjoyed each and every mouthfull.
Pros: All vegan, All delicious, Great team
Cons: Zero cons

Lovely and friendly - Edit
Cute little place, now mostly takeaway but they still have some window benches and a bit of outdoor seating. They have converted some of the indoor into a vegan shop, selling plants, chocolate, mayo and other random vegan essentials! It was a bit empty of stock when we went, but apparently they had sold a lot that day
Read moreAs for food, they had a wide selection of drinks, savouries and cakes. We had the spring special 'banana latte' which was oat milk, banana, one shot of coffee and cinnamon. We also had a pastrami sandwich and veg hash on toast, which were both delicious! We saw praline croissants, biscoff muffins and sausage baps also on the menu.
The staff were very friendly and chatty - all three members came out to talk to us. They were clearly very passionate vegans too!
Pros: Completely vegan , Delicious selection , Friendly staff
Cons: Not much seating!

Fantastic vegan cafe. - Edit
I visited here in late December but I’ve just noticed that the review I wrote did not upload (just a couple of pictures) so I’ll rectify that now.
Read moreWe went in late in the day for coffee and cake both were fantastic.
The Apple Crumble muffin is, I believe , one of the greatest achievements in human history. I ate one and immediately got another to takeaway for the following day.
Other people were finishing their food while we were there and everything looked delicious.
All the food and drinks are vegan.
The owners are both vegan and really passionate about what they do.
I’ll definitely be back when I’m in the area.
Highly recommended.
Pros: Did I mention the Apple Crumble muffins?, 100% vegan., Fantastic friendly staff.
Cons: It’s not in Leeds.

We grabbed food from here straight off a 17h ferry back from Amsterdam and it was incredible. Roasted tofu and stuffing sandwich, apple crumble muffin and blueberry croissant. Even a little treat for the dogs! #Veganuary

What a lovely vegan cafe, with such nice owners... - Edit
Went for lunch on 6/5/2023. *Such* a lovely little vegan cafe near the beach. We had the sausage baps and they were so yummy! And my Australian partner assures me that the coffee was wonderful. We took away a brownie, muffin, and sausage rolls for later too, and they were all just delicious! Most importantly of all, the owners were so friendly and kind - they really went out of their way to help to us. It's a delightful place too - I hope to go back again soon, to sample more of the wonderful menu! Would highly recommend!

Delicious - Edit
Such friendly service! We went in for takeout while we travel from Whitby to Beadnell. There was such a nice vibe inside. We decided to make Whitley Bay our wee stop on our journey simply because it had somewhere fully vegan for us 👌
Read moreWe got a steakless pasty (to die for) an enormous cheese ciabatta, a pastrami bagel, and a biscoff chocolate cake. Everything was delicious and clearly very fresh. We also bought a bag of dog treats for our pup (who waited in the car, not sure if it's dog friendly). Loads of dog treats at the counter!!!
Absolutely tons of food and was only 20 quid! Sat and had it on the beautiful big beach nearby. Such a gem!

Always great - Edit
Really friendly little place. Glad they’ve expanded from their little station venue so you can slow down. The specials/daily board is usually different each time i go. I try to have something new each time i visit but almost always end up with a scone and flat white. The blueberry muffin is amazing and i’ve never had a bad cake, pastry or sandwich here!

Lush vegan restaurant - Edit
Went to Square Roots for the first time since they moved to Monkseaton and wasn’t disappointed. It is a small restaurant so avoid busy times. I had a coconut flat white and sausage and mushroom sandwich in a chibatta(sp?) and my partner had a vegan steak pasty which he said is the best pasty he ever had and I would say he is some what of a pasty connoisseur.
Read moreWe also tried the blueberry and yogurt muffin and the Honeycomb Brownie. Absolutely unbelievable. I’m actually gutted that I don’t have more treats to eat from there and suspect I’ll be having a drive back soon.
Amazing choice of drinks and something for the doggys too!
Customer service was absolutely brilliant.
Pros: Completely vegan, Not a basic sausage sandwich, garnished with mayo, Confectionery. Amazing.!
Cons: Small restaurant, may get filled quick.

Really nice - Edit
Came to the market on a Sunday after a run so we could treat ourselves to burger, nachos and cheesey scones, also 2 cakes to take home for later😄- the scone was really filling and the onion mix on the scone & burger super delicious. The date flapjack tasted like one my Mum used to make so took me right back😄

Was visiting Newcastle for a gig and decided to have a catch up with friends there, and we are so happy we did ! Amazing food, so many options we ended up getting multiple items each, great range of drinks and outstanding staff. There was only 3 staff members and the cafe was very busy but they always had a smile on their face and never made you feel any pressure.

Plant-Based Perfection - Edit
For years, we have wished for a vegan kitchen & coffeehouse in our local area. Once we heard about Square Roots opening a plant-based café, we were looking forward to trying it out.
Read moreWe were not disappointed.
Our expectations were exceeded.
The barista coffee is lovely and comes double-shot as standard (no extra charge for an extra shot of coffee). Plant-based milk is standard (no extra charge for vegan milk). The coffee is well-priced and costs less than what you would be charged elsewhere for a coffee with a milk alternative.
The staff are welcoming and helpful. Matt & Jo are the friendliest café couple. The rest of the staff are a credit to the place. Square Roots has a nice feel to it; we feel relaxed and comfortable here. You are not made to feel rushed or pushed.
They make a wide variety of drinks (hot, cold and iced). There is a great range of freshly prepared hot food and an array of freshly prepared cold food. They have both sweet and savoury options.
My favourite 'coffee with cake' combo is the Dirty Biscuit (Hot Biscoff & Coffee) with a Blueberry Croissant.
Other honourable mentions include: Berry Bagel, Biscoff Muffin, Apple Crumble & Custard Muffin, Oat Cappuccino, Steak-less Pasty, Sausage Roll w/ Stuffing & Chilli Jam.
Dogs are welcome and there is specially-made food/drink for them - including fresh fruit 'pupshakes'.
We have been so frequently that we have had several free coffees from their loyalty card! We look forward to each and every visit.
Pros: 100% Vegan, Friendly Staff, Cosy Café
