Great food, great place - Edit
Note: the shop on the outside is called Curries and Candles, being a combined candleshop and Indian Restaurant. The restaurant is called the Spicy Elephant.
Read moreWe were here right before closing, I saw this little restaurant on the Happycow app, being one of the few fully vegetarian restaurants around. Despite the timing, the chef welcomed us in and took all the time we needed. The combination of traditional Dutch candleshop with Indian stuff and restaurant is a bit weird at first, but it gives this place tremendous charm. The food was absolutely amazing, phenomenal curry, awesome flatbreads. The owner/chef is really enthusiastic and generally a nice person. We would definitely go here again!
Pros: Lots of vegan and vegetarian options, Charming, quirky place, Amazing, authentic Indian food
Cons: Only 3 tables, so if it's busy it might be full

No longer spicy elephant - Edit
Now called curries and candles. Can’t say what the food was like because only person there was not interested in business, no other customers were present. Probably the most inhospitable unwelcome experience ever. Curt and almost rude response. New experience for us. One fixed price menu. Take it or leave it. Certainly could not be the owner as any owner would want to serve customers in a restaurant. Felt very uncomfortable. Can’t imagine the effect the food would have had if she was forced to serve. Most unfortunate as we made special out of the way trip to go there and were looking forward to supporting a vegetarian restaurant.

Great little place - Edit
Came in a couple of minutes before closing time, but the owner let me have my meal there anyway. Lovely dish and a pappadum as dessert.
Read moreWill start renovating soon and will only be take-away during candle season (when the candle shop will move back to the street side). She will return with more menu options after renovation is done!
Will probably eat here again after renovation.
Pros: Friendly owner, Hidden gem
Cons: Limited menu options

Warming food - Edit
There are some dishes on the menu that are vegan and usually the daily curry is as well. I'm very happy to have Spicy Elephant in Gouda, especially since the weather is getting colder and I have more need for hearty and warming food!
Read moreFor groups: there is not a lot of seating. I think about 8-10 seats divided over 3-4 tables - I'll check next time!
