Good daal and onion bhaji

Had the Large Daal and onion bhaji. The onion bhaji comes with a mint chutney. The mint chutney is obviously house made and you can really taste the mint! The onion bhaji had a good fry and flavor. The large daal was too large! It likely could have fed three people. We asked for additional spice which enhanced the already good flavor. They did tell us the chef prefers that spicy is added on the side.

Authentic southern Indian food

I did not expect to find authentic southern Indian food in Juneau! Amazing flavors. Get all the chutneys!!! Menu clearly lists veg options but make sure you communicate you're vegan or else ghee may end up in your dish. As of summer 2022 they were clearly struggling with fully staffing the place (like most restaurants) but the wait wasn't too bad.

More watery than soup would be

Being under new management, and rebranded as SPICE, I had hoped the vegetarian options had improved but was disappointed. The chana masala and aloo mutter were both so watery, I would have been disappointed if it was sold as soup!

My friend who had the chicken masala, which was curiously grey-brown, said the spices were also lacking, though the consistency appeared to be more on point.

The breads are so dense that they resemble a pie crust, or like a Cornish pasty. Again, lacking in flavor.

My guess is that being in Juneau mainly serving locals, that the normal spice flavors might be too much for them? The locals seem to like it?? Maybe this is just what works here? It wouldn’t work down south, and certainly not back in England.

The paneer appetizer was really good. They were out of mango chutney and papadams??

Pros: Large selection of chutneys (not mango today), Clean and pleasant interior, Very nice staff

Cons: Expensive (not for Juneau standards), Watery vegan options, Ironically slight on Spice!

The friendly waiter showed us the vegan options on the menu. The food was good! We shared aloo mutter, daal, and dosa with rice for lunch. Was nice to find more vegan options in Juneau.
