Wish we had a spot like this at home! - Edit
How can you go wrong with a cafe with a full, separate vegan menu, especially when it’s inside a used bookstore? Oh, and did I mention the game and movie “dungeon” in the basement? What an awesome shop! So glad we decided to stop here on our way to the Knoxville airport (it’s conveniently only about ten minutes away). For starters, the person that helped take our order was super friendly and personable. Other guests in line welcomed us and told us we had found a good spot to eat. The sandwiches are named after famous literary figures. For example, we ordered the Ada Lovelace (a breakfast wrap with Just Egg) and the Mary Shelley (a chickpea salad sandwich). They were great! If we lived in the area, we would surely spend a lot of time at Southland. Definitely worth stopping in if you’re in town or heading to/from the Knoxville airport.

Must visit! Great little spot! - Edit
Was traveling to the Knoxville airport and found this cute little book store. This tiny town of Maryville had three places I would have loved to try, but I decided on this one. How wonderful of a place! It's aside a cute book store and they have an entire (huge) vegan menu on their blackboard with all kinds of sandwiches named after famous authors. I had the Mary Shelley, which was a chickpea salad with rosemary and garlic and a vegan provolone and vegan bacon. I understand they sometimes make their own bacon, but not always. I would come back to this place over and over if I lived anywhere nearby.

Favorite Place - Edit
Southland is my absolute favorite place in Blount County, the people are amazing, the food is delicious, and there’s a book store attached! They have local goods for sale in the cafe, and I’ve always walked out of here having a better day.

Delicious Food and Adorable Atmosphere - Edit
I ordered the Hannah Arendt on the Rosemary and Garlic bread and LOVED it. The sandwich came with a side of kettle chips and a homemade pickle sprar, which was divine. I found out after the fact you can purchase a whole jar of their house pickles to take home!
Read moreI also ordered an oat milk latte and took a vegan cookie bar to go. I enjoyed the food more than the coffee (the Espresso was a little sharp), but I still enjoyed the drink overall!
Bonus is the charming book store attached to the cafe which was chock full of used titles and even included a vinyl collection. I'd definitely stop here again!

My new favorite lunch spot - Edit
I’ve known about Southland Cafe for a couple of years but I had no idea that they had a vegan menu! It’s such a quaint little place and the staff was super nice. The vegan menu has so many options! I had the Jane Austin on the rosemary garlic bread and it was delicious. I’ll definitely be back to try out the rest of the menu.

How did it take me 20 years - Edit
Not sure how it took me 20 years to discover this gem, but you can call me a regular now. They have the most extensive vegan menu I’ve found in the Knoxville area. Great place to meet a friend or just stop for a lunch with a good book. Haven’t had anything yet I didn’t enjoy.

Yummy! Yummy! - Edit
I wish I could make this 5 star, but HappyCow won’t let me unless they are fully vegan. But please please go here. As a newer vegan it was a great way to try homemade food and have a great conversation with someone who has been a vegan for many years. I could see bringing my whole family here who all have different dietary habits. I can not wait to go back again!

Full vegan Menu - Edit
The chef has veganized their entire regular menu (and named the dishes after famous women, which is cool.) I loved the BLT with Benevolent Bacon. They always have a vegan dessert available, too. Unlike some restaurants, they have a separate vegan grill. The vibe is casual as it is attached to a bookstore and the menu is comfort food-focused.

Great food friendly service - Edit
Delicious food! Many items were from local ingredients and made in-house like their bread and hummus. They had a vegan wrap and a few vegetarian wraps that could be made vegan. They also had salads, a veggie burger and slices of vegan chocolate cake.

I also had their strawberry iced tea which was delicious! I believe their coffee is from a local roaster as well. They had a cute bookstore attached to it that we perused while waiting for our food. Will definitely be back.
Pros: Great prices , Friendly staff, Fresh local ingredients

Wonderful atmosphere and vegan choices! - Edit
I am so happy we sought out this wonderful bookstore with lots of vegan options! I had a delicious sandwich made with tofu that was fantastic. Everyone was so friendly and helpful and we ended up hanging out and reading for a few hours sipping our delicious coffee drinks. We will be back to try the vegan dessert soon!
