A Toasty, Sometimes Tasty, Sandwich Telephone Game - Edit
I’ve been eating Snarf’s sandwiches since I was nine years old and there was the sole flagship operating from a funky pink building dubbed “The Shack.” Those hot, perfectly crisped, artisan submarines of yesteryear were so tasty, that the moment I first bit into one is permanently seared into my memory alongside my first puppy and 9/11.
Fast forward to present day: The Shack is long demolished, Snarf’s is franchised across three different states, and my menu preferences have narrowed to (my knowledge), the only veganizable alternative:
“A ‘Vegetarian’* on wheat** with all toppings***, except no cheese and no mayo, please.”
*’Vegetarian’: Avocado, Sprouts, Provolone
**also available on white
***Mayo, Mustard, Hot Peppers, Onion, Lettuce, Tomato, Pickle, Seasoning and Oil
Here’s where the major caveat, and thus three-star rating, comes into play. Restating the above order verbatim may yield any number of interesting results. For example, sometimes, “no cheese and no mayo” results in extra portions of both. Sometimes, “all the toppings except no cheese and no mayo” translates to a sandwich including half the toppings, and cheese. There may even be a time when, “all the toppings except no cheese and no mayo plus double hot peppers” turns into a sandwich full of sprouts and double hot peppers.
Such occurrences are regular enough for me, a man of the scientific method, to advise inspecting your sammie for accuracy and/or any errant, dairy-derived, white stuffs before taking that first bite or making the drive home.
Sometimes, though, Snarf’s still nails it. Nothing like the OG, small-batch, pre-franchise days. But enough to keep that occasional hankering of something delicious, toasted, and distinctly Snarf’s, alive.
