Great little cafe shop - Edit
Very well marketed to attract vegan and non vegans. Good selection of grocery items including mock cheeses and premade toasties aswell as pastries etc. We got "All the things" brand cheese with crackers, and toasted salami samdwich with pickles and vegan cream cheese melted as well as mock chicken with lettuce and creamy sauce on roll all very impressive. Had hoped to take home some housemade mock meats but none available. Croissants looked nice but plain so would need to buy with added fillings toasted. Very expensive as expected for location and name.

Not as good as original location - Edit
The highlights for us were the iced chai and the ham, cheese and truffle sandwich. Croque monsieur was very dense and chewy. The egg Martinez (bacon and egg muffin) was a real let down. Very stingy on the bacon and just bland. Queues used to be out the door and people would literally sit in the gutter to eat. New place doesn’t have the same vibe.

Unique vegan experience - Edit
Both Smith & Daughters and the deli have positioned themselves as a premium vegan offering with a plethora of vegan junk food and meat substitutes.
Read moreSuffice to say this comes out in the arrogance of their staff and their overpriced menu. There are better options in the area.

Huge store, loads of variety - Edit
Took me about 15 minutes to decide what to eat! In the end I went for the lunch box, with a fantastic turkey sandwich, beetroot salad and a great donut. I could go back here at least 20 times to try different things (vegemite scrolls! Meat pies!).
Read moreEdit July 2022: new set up and location. Would definitely choose the sandwiches and salads over the hot food, which I found quite salty. Loved the cheese vegemite scroll. Great variety of deli foods.

Not as good as it used to be - Edit
Pastries and sweets still A+ and worth the trip. Croissants are amazing. I've never been a fan of their coffee but haven't tried in the new location
Read moreSince the move to the new premises- the quality in sandwiches has dropped and they have gotten stingy with the amount of fillings- tried the roast beef (of which there was barely any) smeared with too much Dijon mustard and that's all I tasted. The ham and camembert- all I tasted was the sweet jam. As someone else mentioned for $16 these should be packed full of fillings. and stuffed with the wheat meats (like a good deli). The egg salad and chicken salad sandwiches are still safe/good bets. The pies and pastries are very good.
I do not like the layout of the new store, the once prominent deli case, is now facing the wrong way and not the central focus point. You used to be "wowed" walking into the old deli. I much preferred the older looker with brighter kitschy look.
Overall, still very good and worth going to, but its not as good as it used to be.
Pros: taste, qaulity, selection
Cons: expensive

Shadow of its former self - Edit
If you hadn’t ever been to the previous S&D maybe this will still be impressive, but sadly the quality is greatly diminished. The bread is no longer very good, which brings the whole sandwich down. …may not sound like a big deal, but sandwich lovers and people who have been prior to the new place will get it. Would recommend hot options in the “pie cabinet” over the cold options.

💞vegan deli💓💓💓💗💕💞💘 - Edit
Smith&Deli is rated so highly on like every Melbourne vegan guide so was a little disappointed w/ my experience (probs just bc of my high expectations)..waited like 30min (there was no line at the deli) for a sandwich that was way too expensive and not good..i got gf bread and it was way too dry, not enough toppings/spread:///// However, everyone working was very lovely and I only tried a couple things on the menu…the whole deli seems amazing as well as the little grocery options they have💝

Waited 30 mins for our English breakfast to be completed with the missing items as promised, then the chefs change their mind and a portion of our good never came. Very boring, tasteless breakfast and exhorbitant prices. Hash browns are obviously frozen packaged ones. Stay clear!

Phenomenal vegan deli with a huge array of tasty sandwiches (hot and cold), deli items, some vegan groceries, and take-home meals. Cannot go past my fave - the Maury Ballstein 🤤I would really consider moving to Melbourne just to have better access to Shannon and the team’s brilliance.

Big Food - Edit
Based on a New York deli, the sandwiches are big and there’s plenty of choice. I had the pastrami Rubenstein. The pastrami was not very convincing but it was filling. There is also a good range of sweets. The cannelloni was crunchy and choc filling good. There could be a larger range of drinks.

A must go - Edit
Very delicious food and love that it’s all vegan. There is no seating but there’s a park nearby you can sit at. The donuts are delicious and so are the sandwiches. Only downfall was that there was a 30 minute wait for the takeaway sandwiches and my order was messed up but this may have been a one time thing.

The dream - Edit
This is a deli, not a cafe or restaurant, so don't be surprised by the lack of seating and the queuing system to order. There's plenty of green spaces in the area to sit and enjoy your coffee, cake and massive sandwich!
Read moreI am stoked they transformed this into the Deli it was always supposed to be.
If you're not sure about the system (while is essentially 'take a number'), just ask the staff - they've always been super friendly when I've been there.
There's ready to eat sandwiches, lots of cakes and treats, to go snacks, and plenty of options to heat up for dinner but the real shining light here is the ingredients on offer to make yourself an amazing picnic, grazing platter or delicious fancy dinner.
There's plant-based deli meat slices, salami, ham, turkey, mushrooms, olives, hummus, garlic dip, cheeses, salads, pasta, pies, antipasto, cakes, donuts, treats and cookies. As well as premade sauces, drinks, a small selection of groceries, snacks and merch, there's plenty to cook at home, including schnitzels, ribs, calamari, chicken souvlaki, and more, plus a rotating mix of things like curries, mac and cheese, shepherds pie, sausage rolls, lasagna, chilli non carne and kung pao chicken.
You're probably not gonna like everything; perrsonally, the deli slices are way too salty for me, and I'm just not a fan of vegan shrimp & calamari. But that's the joy of a place like this - so many options means you'll love some and not love others (just like omnis in an omni deli). The cheeses are mind blowing and I particularly love the fish fillets - they've opened up recipe options I never thought possible.
This isn't the place to go for a big sit down lunch (though the sangas are definitely something special) but the place to go to top up the fridge & the freezer and to get all the goodies to spoil your guests.
Honestly go here to buy all the things you never thought you could buy vegan.
Side note - It's pretty disappointing to see this getting lower ratings because the owner isn't vegan. She's always been really open about it. Her businesses are vegan, she regularly showcases plant-based greatness across events and media in Melbourne and keeps her social vegan so that her followers feel safe (high recommend her Instagram for vegan cooking demos and video recipes)
Pros: A unique and innovative place, Serves vegan food you never thought was possible, Rotating options = delicious surprises
Cons: The meat slices are super salty, Be prepared for queues at lunch time, Rotating options = your fave might be temporary
