Best Bakery Deli - Edit
Smith & Deli has a wide range of sweets and savoury, deli, snacks as well as larger meal sized canteen food. My favourite sandwich is the Maury Ballstein. They have excellent strong chai (not unflavoured & watered down like most other places) and great coffee.

It’s fascinating how some self-styled ‘vegans’ will align themselves with the perpetrators of animal abuse just to discredit a vegan who annoys them because they are more committed or activist.

@otherdimension Yeah well we know that’s what it’s always been about for you. You act as if my comments are just about me making myself look good. I believe you know very well that my comments are sincere but you gaslight me because my comments push a button for you and you react defensively. Anybody who witnessed the extent of your stalking of me on this website would immediately see something was not quite right with you. You don’t want to be friends with passionate vegans you’d rather criticise them for actually speaking up, under the pretext that this is elitist or self-righteous. The way you have called my comments ‘shaming’ has been ridiculous to the point of hilarity, and your defensiveness and psychological self-preservation has been transparent.

Excellent & one of a kind! - Edit
Superb every time! A great light filled environment that is surprisingly large inside with ample indoor and outdoor seating. The deli counter is an exciting experience, filled with a wide range of offerings from the classics antipasto🫒 and cheeses🧀 to Greek fish 🐟and Spanish prawns 🦐 ( heaps more)to be cooked up at home - all fully vegan of course!
Read moreThe sandwiches 🥪 are great, as well as the side dishes 🥗 and of course the pastries cabinet 🥐. There is also a selection of pantry and freezer items to buy, crisps, ice creams 🍦, sauces for eg and some Spanish vegan treats which is a nice homage to Shannon Martinez’ (the business creator/chef) cultural history.
Must tries: Spanish tortilla, Scramble bun, Vegemite scroll and chocolate cake

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of visiting Smith & Deli in Collingwood, and let me tell you, it exceeded all expectations!
The menu offers an array of options, from hearty breakfast toasties to decadent loaded sandwiches, all bursting with flavour and creativity. The 'Egg Martinez' was a personal favourite, with it being a creative knock-off of a Maccas Egg & Bacon McMuffin.
The affordability of the menu (toasties range from $10-18) combined with the innovative flavour combinations makes it a must-visit for anyone craving delicious vegan food.
On top of all of this, their vegan bakery items are definitely one of the best available in Melbourne - with their bakery items often rotating. (think donuts, cookies, slices, croissants and more!).
I honestly can't imagine anyone being unhappy with the food offering.
Just be mindful to get there early, as we went on a Sunday morning (around 10am) and we were lucky to get a seat!
Pros: Affordable, One-stop spot for vegans, Delicious food
Cons: Can get busy - struggle to find a seat

The sandwiches were great! Plus I loved the little pantry they had in the shop. I wish the music was a little quieter but at least there was outside seating away from it.

Lost its soul.. - Edit
Came back after three years to discover a cafeteria selling China made socks and other crude promotional offerings. The food is expensive and the quality is not nearly as good as it was. $50 for two toasted sandwiches and two drinks. Worse than that, the spirit and vibe of the place, though glossier is just commercial and sad. Not going back.

Shame about the rude server - Edit
The first place I go to eat back home after being overseas for a few years and I'm greeted with an awful attitude and accused of "touching the glass and breathing over the food" when I was simply pointing to the baked goods. I couldn't believe the way the rude server spoke to me. I can't recall a server being that rude while I've been overseas. What a way to start my visit here!
Read moreAs for the food itself, it's really tasty as I remember it (albeit expensive as pretty much all of Melbourne is nowadays, especially with the weekend surcharge). Shame that guy dampend my experience.

Every vegan deli should learn from this spot - Edit
I really, really like down to earth deli experiences like this. We stopped in before they closed and grabbed a few things - sausage roll, egg salad, and Greek fish.
Read moreAll very good but notable highlights were the egg salad and fish. The former has good seasoning and texture, and the latter has a neat flakiness to it that I haven’t had yet. Dunno what they do but am glad they do it.

Lost for words for how delicious everything is - Edit
This place (and even smith & daughters) truly push the boundaries of what vegan food is. All sandwiches and salads are well balanced in taste, and the sauces are unique. I'll admit the coffee could probably be a bit better, but the main star of the show is the deli set out and the wide options you can choose here.
Read moreNot to mention their mystery boxes that you can get at the end of the day on door dash, is such good value for money.

This is a very refined place with tables where you can eat in. The staff are very nice. There are plenty of food and beverage options, so if you want to try everything, you'll be going there a lot. There is QR code ordering available using Mr Yum. There is also outdoor seating if the weather is good.

Fast service and very delicious food - Edit
I had a hard time choosing the food because they had a wide variety of attractive flavors, I ended up choosing the Mauri Ballstein toastie, which was phenomenal, I also recommend the chai chocolate, it was a little spicy and had very well-executed flavors, I loved it.

Fewer choices for the sweet tooth - Edit
29/10/2023 it has been recently renovated. The groceries section is now on one side with the food in the other side. Despite their IG insistence that they have more cakes, they most certainly do not imo. The donut was amazing though as were the sandwiches. Unfortunately for us, there was a woman a few tables down from us talking to her friend loudly about the various dead animals she’d consumed during the week. Not the restaurants fault but why do people do this?
Read moreI had been going to their Moor St deli since 2015. It was amazing with long queues out the door.
I’ve been there a number of times since they moved to Collingwood and whilst I love that you can sit inside now, and their savoury section is huge, I think they have fewer cakes. It is mostly just pastries and muffins with a couple of cakes. Still nice but I liked the cakes!

Sadly not what it used to be - Edit
I used to LOVE this deli when it was at Moor St. The huge range of freshly made sandwiches, and daily/weekly changing array of savoury and sweet pastries. It was always my first choice for lunch, now that it's moved I barely think about it.
Read moreThe sandwich selection has gone down about 75%, and what's left was never my top picks. I'm SO glad they still have the egg Martinez but when we went on Sunday afternoon, it looked like it had been sitting there all day. I still bought it and heated it up when I got home, it obviously wasn't as good and I miss the days when everything was so FRESH. My go to sandwiches still available are the Little Havana and The Godfather. I wish they would bring back The Rocky, Home Alone, and Hail Seitan.
Anyway, we went there for a very late brunch and ordered the big breakfast. They had just run out of the hash brown, so we chose sauteed greens, and mushrooms to go with the bacon, tofu scramble, and baked beans (which we were giving a crapload of). Now, I've had their tofu scramble a couple of times many moons ago when they were serving it at the original Smith and Daughters, and that iteration was amazing, very creamy, and was always the standard I compared others to. I didn't love it this time, there was a flavour I couldn't identify, and I wish there was black salt in it. The sauteed greens were surprisingly my favourite part of the dish, with their chunks of garlic in it.
I'm so sad that whenever I go to Smith&Deli now, I almost always leave feeling a bit disappointed, the food is not as fresh, the pastries certainly nowhere near as fresh (I feel like they're of the quality that they should be discounted), and for the prices they charge, it's hard to justify coming back too often. Maybe you have to go much earlier in the day.
I did buy a tub of the chicken salad, which as always is delicious, especially the little pieces of green apple throughout. It's extremely expensive though, at almost $9.00 for a small tub. Also, the girl who served us, sneezed into her hand, didn't wash or use hand sanitiser, and then served us without gloves. Sigh.
Pros: delish chicken salad, egg Martinez, when fresh
Cons: staff sneezed into hand and then served us, expensive, not fresh like it used to be

I wish they had the same number and variety of cakes they had at the deli.

Yeah! I'm not a huge sweet tooth, but I did try a lot from their old deli. I still remember their delicious jam long johns, and they would constantly be putting out freshly made donut holes etc.
