A no brainer vegan winner - Edit
Smith and deli is a no brainer option for any vegan in Melbourne. I’ve been going here for years back before they even had seating options. So many options at reasonable prices. The baked goods inventory is always to die for. Plus they sell lots of cute merch and take home grocery items.
Read morePros: Piggy Bundy Sandwich, Cinnamon and cardamon donught, Mouth watering baked goods
Cons: Can’t book a seat so can struggle on busy weekends, Often the music can be up far too loud.

My most favorite vegan cafe. - Edit
My favorite vegan cafe. This is a cafe I visit every time I go to Melbourne.
Read moreThe chocolate chai is the best drink I've ever had. (Lately, the spice has been weaker, but I'm looking forward to drinking spicy chocolate chai again🫶)
The food served changes depending on the time of day. Our favorites are egg martinze and scramble roll.
We will visit every day during our stay in Melbourne except on the days the shop is closed.
Thank you for opening early in the morning!

Hey now hey now, this is what dreaaaaams are made of!

Did not disappoint! - Edit
Coming from Perth, I had heard about Smith and Deli for years before we finally got to go here. A Big Breakfast can be a hit or miss (especially the vegan ones) and I feel like it's one of those dishes I order and then regret, but not this one! It was really good, and I enjoyed every aspect of it. My Mum had a The Godfather toastie and also really liked it. We took away a couple of pastries for later which went down a treat.

As a Brisbanite I’d wanted to come here for years. And it was everything I’d hoped it would be haha.

What a delight - Edit
I have taken the bus, train & tram all the way to Collingwood to go to Smith and Deli for the first time. Took me over an hour. I’ve just ordered a big breakfast and a hot chocolate something that I’ve wanted to do for ages. Both items were delivered to my table within 5 minutes of placing my order - that's impressive. I have had a vegan big breakfast before however what impressed me with this serving was that they included everything. as you can see from the photo it’s a full big breakfast with all the trimmings. I was particularly impressed with the bacon which at other places has been fairly limp. Where is this one was crispy and tasty. You can’t help but be impressed with the way that they seriously include everything to make your experience the best

I think ‘iconic’ is mythologising a bit. It’s fine. I’d prefer it if it were actually vegan-owned.

Amazing - Edit
This place was a lot bigger than I expected, beautifully layed out with friendly staff and lots of funky vegan books and knick knacks. The menu was mind blowing, so many options, but the highlight was the pie floater. A vegan pie floater. Next level, do yourself a favour and drop in for a feed.

Delish!! - Edit
The food here is outstanding. The prices are a bit on the pricier end but being Collingwood you expect that. However the Spanish mushrooms and the Maury Ballstein are amazing. And they have plenty of gluten free options for those who are gluten intolerant, or celiac like myself.

Good range of food, from hot meals to cold salads and pastries. Also a deli section where you can buy cold cuts/meats and premade things like lasagne, pies etc. Tbh I've never had anything at S&D that I didn't like!

We walked here from our city hotel....this is a good idea to walk off the calories! We arrived at 2pm and there wasn't a lot available so go early. What we had was delicious though, worth the walk, will need to revisit!

It’s a popular cafe with some nice food but the business is an example of plant-based capitalism, making money out of the popularity of plant-based food, but not vegan-owned.

what if someone who isn't vegan goes there and decides to make a change? Wouldn't that be a good thing? Once again you are shaming a business and owners when they don't fit your perfect 100% world view. I think Shannon has done good to promote veganism even if she isn't. Yeah she's in it to make money, but I suspect that was not her main reason for opening smith & deli and her other ventures.

My favourite vegan spot - Edit
I love everything about Smith & Deli. The cinnamon doughnuts are to die for ✨, they are enormous and really fluffy and I cannot recommend them enough. Everything is vegan and delicious, and they have a huge variety of breakfast and lunch options. All the staff are so lovely, very LGBTQ friendly, and there are always some customers’ dogs having a great time too. 11/10

Everything here is always so good. Piggy bundy is my favourite sandwich but I’ve never been disappointed with anything. Today I decided to splurge on the fancy expensive European hot chocolate (with oat milk) and oh my goodness it was worth every cent. So smooth, sweet and delicious.

Melbourne's Vegan Haven - Edit
Smith & Deli is a completely vegan haven with sandwiches, pastries, salads, coffee, and grocery items, just off Smith St in Collingwood. They also have a full-service restaurant next door, Smith & Daughters.
Read moreUnfortunately the quality of food here has gone down in recent years, while the prices have continued to go up. Their sandwiches are now unfortunately pre-made, and their coffee is subpar (better options elsewhere in Melbourne!). However, their pastries are to die for. I highly recommend picking up one of their delicious cinnamon donuts or croissants.
They also offer made to order cakes which are consistently delicious!
If you're visiting Melbourne, I highly recommend picking up some baked goods to enjoy in a nearby park.
Pros: Amazing variety, vegan hub
Cons: Not great coffee, pre-made sandwiches, very expensive for the quality
Tiggy
There are a number of vegan restaurants in Melbourne that are vegan owned and operated, which S&D is not. I can’t feel like it is a vegan haven under those circumstances.
