Service no longer exists - Edit
I’d give it 1 star if I could. I’ve been here a few times, it started off amazing, however I’ve got to say each time the service gets worse, tonight we were met with the rudest one yet. We walked in, just 2 of us, we didn’t mind waiting, that was fine, we were greeted with ‘yes?’, I said we’d like to get dinner please, and I got a huge sigh, rolled eyes, and the Ye olde you have to be on a list and it won’t be at a table, it will only be at the bar and there is nowhere to wait here so ...... ATTITUDE! Not everyone has a mobile phone. We don’t care if we waited inside or out or sat at the bar to eat or whatever, she was just so rude. So we went across the road, got a garlic bread, ate it and came back - not even a hello when we got back, just pointed at 2 bar seats with a menu chucked at us. We then waited 15 minutes, and didn’t get so much as offered to order a drink. I’d like to mention at this point, there were plenty of empty tables, so they were not run off their feet. We looked at the menu, which was disappointing at best, very disjointed, and I was looking forward to dessert, but they were disappointingly coffee heavy. So we left. Not even a query, or goodbye or anything. I don’t think I’ll ever go back. Very very poor. The service at veggie bar was amazing, go there instead.

It seems abit over rated - Edit
This place was great but nothing compared to Smith and deli! I loved the atmosphere and the decorations. The menu was great but my dish wasn't the best thing in the world.

Nice vegan reastaurant - Edit
This all-vegan place is good as there is a lot to choose from. Used to be Latin themed but now Italian? There is a brunch menu and a dinner one but a lot of the items are the same. It gets very busy and if you don’t book ahead (or even if you do) you have to go on annoying hipster communal table. The food is really good but it’s very salty. I like salt but it’s still too much for me. They have some really good parmesan substitutes.

Great dining experience - Edit
This place was super buzzy and bustling on a Good Friday evening and the staff were friendly and efficient. We made the mistake of picking the 'Feast' thinking we would get more of a sampling of the extensive menu but at $55 for two it just ended up being the waitress picking $110 worth of small and large plates for us so in hindsight would rather have picked myself - my mistake for not having better clarified. The food was inventive and tasty - especially the potato pavé - but I do agree with other reviews that it's over-salted.

Breakfast is Big! - Edit
The fuss surrounding this place eventually got to me and we decided to go for breakfast. I got the meatball sub which I didn't think was that great. However my friend got the breakfast pizza and my partner got the scrambled tofu and they were awesome. All meals were large. I got a mocktail which was delicious too. The place is pricey but I didn't leave underwhelmed. One of the staff members seemed annoyed to be working and very unenthused. The other staff were wonderful. Food came out pretty fast and the staff were attentive. I will definitely be back to try again and hopefully raise to five stars.

Overpriced, lazy food - Edit
One thing to say about S&D: they know how to (over)use salt! Sadly too much salt either means the chef doesn’t know what they’re doing, or doesn’t care.
Read moreThe food is not terrible - lots of good ideas - but just not executed with care or love. Lazy.
For the price, most other vegan food in Melbourne is much better.
Cocktails are pretty good though.

Disappointed - Edit
We were really looking forward to dinner on a Friday night but were disappointed. It was very noisy - too noisy for Shazam to pick up the music and it was hard to converse. The food was good. We tried two glasses of wine. The Barbera wine was average: the Gamay was very mediocre. At $15 a glass this was very poorly priced. It was quite hot inside.

Really really good - Edit
Took a vegan sceptic for brunch. It was so good with loads of interesting and different dishes. Started with pink sherbet cocktails which were heavenly. Friend had breakfast pizza and was genuinely confused about how it was vegan and even asked the staff!!! I had the frittata which is the best Vegan version of a traditional egg based dish I have ever eaten

Hit & Miss - Edit
We had two pasta dishes priced around $25 and they were tiny. The taste was good and the presentation was nice, however we were both still hungry after eating. Our friends had the schnitzel, which comes only with a slice of lemon and lettuce. While the taste of everything was solid, the price does not suit what you get. Ate better for less in Melbourne.

Excellent! Creative cuisine in a lively atmosphere - Edit
Smith & Daughters offers an appealing menu of inspired creations drawing on many culinary influences. I wish I'd been in town long enough to try more of the menu.
Read moreFrom the brunch menu, I chose the "breakfast pizza" and was very pleased.
In terms of both atmosphere and service, the place is a curious marriage of warmth and edge: freaky fine dining. I enjoyed it.

Nice but small portions - Edit
We went went it was Italian food, I had pasta and meat balls for $25 which was one of the more expensive items on the menu. Whilst it was delicious and very flavourful I was a bit disappointed by the portion size as I was still hungry after. However my friend had a schnitzel which was huge so seems to vary!

Favorite place I ate in all of my month’s time in Australia. Plan ahead as it’s not always easy to get a table, but definitely worth it. Splurge and try multiple things, you won’t regret it.

Delightful night out - Edit
A favourite for Melbourne vegans. I have been twice; once with my partner and once in a big group for a birthday. The large group set menu is so worth the money; we had SOOO much amazing food we were bursting at the seams. Menu changes seasonally, showcasing the creativity of the owners and chefs. Bar is stocked with beautiful local and international vegan beer, wines etc.

Horrid and overpriced - Edit
Insanely overpriced for the quality of food. Paid $25 for a quarter of a plate of pasta that was just coated in olive oil. The main chef is also not vegan which is probably why her food is so boring and uses her foul tasting faux meats as a crutch. Much better food for a fraction of the price can be found literally anywhere else in Melbourne.

Just can't be beaten - Edit
I love this place. It just gets better every time - always prefer the bunch menu to dinner. The parmesan scramble is Delicious and the new frotatta was out of this world. The sauce on top was sooooo good. Great portions and worth every cent. Just wish there were gluten free desserts.

Amazing! - Edit
My partner took me here for my birthday and it was one of the best meals I’ve ever had. The flavours were excellent and everything tasted very fresh. Everything on the menu sounds great with a good variety of options. Service was a little slow but it was very busy and the food came out quickly. It is a little pricey but it’s totally worth it for a nice dinner out. Would 100% recommend and can’t wait to go back.

Breakfast pizza! - Edit
Having been once so far to their nearby Deli for an excellent sandwich, I was keen to visit the restaurant. I had the fabulous Breakfast Pizza and a “virgin Marta” cocktail, which was garnished with lemon, dill, olives and cucumber slices. (Too bad they use plastic straws.) What a satisfying meal! The pizza had scrambled tofu, cheese, prosciutto, crispy capers and rocket on a good, thin crust - $22. I carried away two leftover pieces and enjoyed them just as much later, at room temperature. They were doing a brisk business at midday Saturday. I will go again to try more of the menu. Wish they were open all day on weekdays too.

Used to be better - Edit
This place used to tick all the boxes in terms of flavour and service. The star wasn't as welcoming as in the past and the food I have to say was tasty but not mind-blowing although very expensive for the area. The dishes have a lot of salt or fillers or something that made our all group really gassy.
