Very vegetarian friendly

I went to SITAR for lunch last month after checking the Happy Cow list of veg friendly restaurants in Yokohama. I wanted to have a vegetarian meal and opted for Matar Paneer in the set meal, which is quite affordable. They replaced the naan (which contains egg) with a tandoori roti. The food was yummy though not close to the real indian taste of the curry. The set lunch was quite filling.

The restaurant is within 5 mins walk from Nihon-Odori station in the Minatomirai Line. The interior was very beautiful in traditional Indian style. A quiet and peaceful place to dine. I will visit again to try other dishes in the menu.

Pros: Vegetarian Friendly, Peaceful environment and prompt service, Close to station

Cons: Naan contains egg

Delicious food in a gorgeous setting

Sitar is a venerable Indian restaurant in Nihon-Odori that has been in business since 1986. We visited on a blazing hot day, and it was so nice to slip inside the cool, pleasantly dark restaurant. The decor is gorgeous, and I liked the instrumental Indian music playing in the background.

The staff understands veganism and will guide you through the menu. We went with a veganized version of the lunch set, which included vegetable curry, a samosa, rice, salad, and tandoori roti.

The curry was fantastic— rich and flavorful, with so many spices and a hint of sweetness. Usually the samosas you get at Indian restaurants come out of a box (that’s my impression, at least), but these looked and tasted like they were made in-house. The roti was delicious, too.

I really enjoyed my meal here in this beautiful cave of a restaurant, and I’ll definitely go back.

Pros: Staff understands veganism , Delicious food , Nice decor and music

Best Indian in Yokohama

As a vegan resident of Yokohama I eat Indian a few nights most weeks, and Sitar is my favourite. The owner, Kumar, who is virtually always there, understands well what vegans can and can't eat, and I have never had problems at all, in going there at least once a week for almost a year. The food is always fresh and delicious, seating is comfortable, decor is pleasant and service is always friendly and efficient. The papadoms and mango and sweet chutneys served upon arrival are a nice touch. For the overall balance of food, price, comfort, service and location, Sitar wins as the best Indian restaurant in Yokohama, and as far as I can find, the best meal out in the city.

To get there, take exit 2 (for Chinatown, not Motomachi) and walk North. At the third set of traffic lights (including the ones straight after the exit) turn left. Sitar is at the end of the street, on the left. It is well signposted and stairs lead down to the restaurant.

Pros: close to Chinatown, easy to get a vegan meal, good service

Cons: only four vegan mains
