Amazing food! - Edit
Very cute vegan cafe conveniently located 15 minutes from kiyumizu-dera. We tried the grilled meat set, rice with soy meat, and guacamole dishes and it was all delicious! The best food we have had in Japan!

This wonderful small restaurant was recommended to us by the vegan hosts where we are staying, and it was a fantastic recommendation.
Read moreThe owner is a friendly happy man, and loves and works by his printed motto of peace and laugh.
The first night I had the Vegan grilled meat set meal, which consisted of a salad with the grilled meat, which was slightly sweet and covered in sesame seeds. It is served with a soup, some pickled beans and a bowl of rice. My husband chose taco rice, which was a spicy minced soya, and salad and rice. It also came with the soup and beans.
For dessert I had a set soymilk, something like blancmange, with vegan cream, raspberry flakes and a mango sauce to pour over called Pudding
The second night I tried the vermicelli, with fried vegetables, again with a soup of ginger and shimeji mushrooms and the pickled beans. My husband had enjoyed his so much last night he he repeated his choice, and I again had Pudding.
We very much appreciated the guide to Japanese table manners in the back of the menu, and the wonderful owner was only to happy to help with pronunciation of the phrases. He was delighted that we attempted to say them, and even more pleased the second night. All in all, a wonderful place to go, and very highly recommended.
Advice would be to go early in the evening as it fills up fast and is only small. #Veganuary

Rainy evening in Kyoto - Edit
It was evening and raining in Kyoto, but we had to have dinner and went to look for the nearest vegan restaurant. It was warm inside and the owner immediately showed kindness. We ordered a set of soy meat, tempeh snacks and drinks, everything was cooked quickly and it was delicious! The menu is quite large, credit cards are accepted. The owner really liked that my boyfriend knows a few phrases in Japanese!

We were first in the restaurant for dinner and we were served promptly. The guy there was very kind. I had the onzigari (?) meal which was made up of different dishes. The tofu and mixed veggies were my favourite. My partner said the nachos were nice.

We went for lunch and were eating early so were the only people in the restaurant. The owner was so sweet and the food was so delicious as well as the drinks. Highly recommend the lime soda.

A great little place full of character and good service. We got the spring rolls as an entree (refreshing) and soy meat sets, definitely was some of the best meat alternative we tasted in all of Japan, the set was simple and delicious and the service was speedy. Watching the assembly of the chocolate parfait that we ordered under the owner’s (who is also the chef and waiter!) recommendation was a delightful experience, so much attention to detail, everything was delicious.

Wir waren zu zweit und haben alle frische Springrolls bestellt. Alle 3 Varianten kann ich nur wärmstens empfehlen. Als Hauptgang hatten wir Vegan grilled meat set meal. Hier erhält man eine klare Brühe mit Pilzen und Ingwer, dazu Reis etwas eingelegten Rettich, grünen Salat mit Dressing und das "Fleisch". Alles ist hervorragend angemacht und schmeckt ultra lecker😍

I had the green curry, which wasn't the best curry of my life but for the price I think it was outstanding. The staff were really friendly and spoke decent English. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere. They have food options for lighter eating and larger meals. Would definitely recommend!

Every dish we had was amazing! The menu is asian food based and very versatile. One of the very few places in Japan where you can get Vietnamese Pho f.e. I'll definitely be back for more.

All the dishes were really delicious, especially the meat. It was just incredible. Its texture and the flavour were exactly like thinly sliced fatty pork, marinated and grilled (said by an ex pork lover till 2022).
If I lived in Kyoto, I would eat there every other day (not because it’s not worth my daily visit, but because I like my Korean cooking too).

The food was delicious, we ended up ordering a lot, two 'smaller' plates and two main dishes between two people, which was a lot of food but it was very very worth it. The staff (I think the owner) was so very lovely and helpful. Will definitely revisit!

The BEST food! - Edit
This was probably the best meal we ate on our 2-week stay in Japan, including multiple cities! We had the "meat" set and a vegetable-based meal set. The faux meat was so amazing, and the wasabi-based dressing on the salad blew us away. All aspects of the meal were amazing, every dish on each set were so full of flavor.

Amazing vegan meat set lunch - Edit
The vegan meat set lunch came with a salad, rice, soup, and some greens. The space was small and was run just by the owner was so kind and friendly and had a fun little “welcome to Japan! Here is how we order food” message in the back of the menu. 10/10 one of my favorite meals in Kyoto.

The food at the Silver Backs Café was great. We had the "Meat Set Meal", which was very tasty and contains a soup, a bowl o rice, the a large Portion of vegan meat, a salad and a small portion of beans in a delicious sauce. Especially the Wasabi based salad dressing and the vegan meat was awesome.

Miso soup to die for, and lots of wasabi - Edit
One of the best meals in Kyoto - had the grilled meat set, which was great and came with a delicious miso soup. The tempeh was also great. However, the meat set came with a salad that had a strong wasabi dressing. I don’t mind wasabi but my partner does not, and the meat sits on top of the salad, so if you do not like wasabi you may struggle to finish this

A really special, charming little place off the beaten path. The owner prepared our meal to order. Everything had a personal, friendly touch. This place reminded me of a kind of restaurant from a small town in a different time, when someone who just loved cooking and meeting people could just open up a little welcoming spot.
