Authentic Japanese food and drinks

This is a cute place near the Griftpark where you can eat, drink and shop for Japanese goodies. The staff is always friendly.
They have a toilet behind the counter.

The eggplant/vegan mince don had a nice and subtle umami taste. The eggplant was very smooth and the rice was slightly sticky. Really nice!
The vegan katsu curry was very good as well: the curry (with mushroom) was very flavoursome and the katsu tasted like meat. Their cauliflower curry was good as well, but I prefer the vegan katsu. The eggplant curry is a fancy version of the don. I do prefer the other curries though.

Some other dishes I tried were Korokke with potato or pumpkin (nice), Kurumi miso tofu (decent) and mango mochi (nice).

The Kukicha tea was very tasty and mild, so no bitterness. Their hojicha and sannen bancha tea were good as well. Both had an aromatic and smoky/woody flavour, but the sannen bancha was a bit more sweet. The genmaicha tea was good, but tasted more standard than the other ones.
Their homemade cold ice tea tasted bland.

Amazing and delicious

Great restaurant with plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. It tasted amazing and really gave me a Japanese atmosphere ❤️
I find it a shame I can't give it 5 stars just because it isn't a completely vegan/vegetarian restaurant

Pros: Plenty of option, Delicious , Nice atmosphere

True Japanese food

The city of Utrecht has many Japanese restaurants. The only problem is: they are run by people who have never been to Japan and who have never eaten Japanese food. They think all Japanese eat sushi all day. True Japanese food is different and that’s what Shokudo offers.

Although Shokudo is not a vegan restaurant, the menu does offer several vegetarian and vegan options. True to the definition of Japanese food, Shokudo offers seasonal ingredients. When I was there they offered the “Mabo Nasu Don”. A bowl of rice with eggplant, vegan meat, rice and miso sauce. Everything from the presentation and smell to the taste is truly Japanese.

The menu also lists Japanese style curry (very different from Indian curry) and vegan don, as well as vegan side dishes.

The restaurant seats about 25 people, which means sitting down for a lengthy meal isn’t always possible. Take out is available.

Pros: True Japanese food, Nice atmosphere, Healthy and tasty

Cons: Expensive, Limited seating
