Great food and atmosphere! - Edit
We stopped in to try a few things and were blown away. The food is amazing. The crispy oyster mushroom sandwich is the perfect texture and so full of flavor. The coconut rice was great. The staff was also so knowledgeable and kind. We would definitely be back.

Small storefront with tables inside and picnic tables out front. We had a Bowl, the Two Hand Pie weekend special and a Tamarind/Ginger drink, all were great. Staff was helpful and friendly, restaurant was clean and bright.

Phenomenally Fresh and New - Edit
Thoroughly pleased with my first trip to ShadoBeni. Was first in line on a Saturday morning, ended up ordering the buss up shut with curried chickpeas and potato, okra, and baigon choka (eggplant stew). All fantastic - great flavor, balance of sweet and savory, and ever so filling. Had to also try the coconut bake with sorrel jelly for novelty sake, and it was a fluffy white bread with pungent sweet jelly, similar to hibiscus.

Standout of Our Pittsburgh Visit! - Edit
My boyfriend and I ended up here after visiting the "Mattress Factory" art museum in Pittsburgh and looking for something nearby. Little did we know we would be ending up at probably one of the best vegan restaurants I've ever been to! Shadobeni specializes in Trinidadian cuisine, which features heavy African and South Asian influences. As you might expect based on all of that, it is very vegan friendly, and lends itself well to being the basis of this fully vegan restaurant! I ordered the "buss up shut"--a super flaky flatbread that ostensibly resembles a "busted up shirt"--with sides of chewy okra, piquant and cinnamon-y curried chickpeas, and creamy stewed eggplant (the special). My boyfriend opted for the burrito-like roti wrap, full of spinach and soya based mock meat. We also split an order of the coconut bake, a very light, biscuit-y bread served with a fruity tropical jam, and sipped on some delicious sorrel and hibiscus punch plus a very chunky and ice cold passionfruit smoothie. Frankly, all of the food was phenomenal here. The only thing I didn't care for was the pepper based sauce, which I found to be extremely and inedibly spicy! Much preferred the sour but complex tamarind sauce they offer. All of the other aspects of the restaurant were good--fast and pleasant service, cheerful interior space with some cool art books to leaf through, and reasonably affordable. I really don't think you can go wrong with Shadobeni!

Delicious - Edit
I had a rotti wrap, which was amazing. The mango sauce is perfection. Their wine was also very unique and delicious. My only regret is that I was too full for dessert!

The food was delicious and unique. I highly recommend it! We got the special (can’t remember the name) and oyster mushroom sandwich which had an amazing bread. We also got the sprinkle cookie. They don’t have any nuts or peanuts so that’s a relief for those with allergies.

Great food - Edit
I had the oyster mushroom sandwich. I felt like they could have added more mushroom because the bun is very thick but it was still delicious. The plantains I could tell were a bit old however. The portion sizes are also a bit small. The sorrel drink I had was on point though. I definitely recommend this place I just think there’s opportunity to improve.

I can’t stop thinking of this food - Edit
First stop in Pittsburgh and kind of a bummer because no other food lived up to how amazing this was! We split one of the daily specials and another plate with the okra, soya, and chickpeas…all amazing. Wish I had taken a picture before smashing all that food…

Amazing food - Edit
Staff was super friendly and food tasted great. Highly recommend the sea moss punch, kind of like a chilled vegan version of spiced eggnog. Nice tasting coconut bake. Doubles had a good spiciness and I think the best food item we tried. I would go back to try more of the menu!

Easily one of the best vegan restaurants in Pittsburgh!
Read moreThis place absolutely slays. The food is always brilliantly prepared. Fresh and stewed items raise the bar for the whole city. Classic dishes I have not had since traveling to other larger cities. Healthy, delicious, packed with nutrition.
The about us section on the website is an amazing story of the chef owners Journey and approach to vegan food.
The staff are absolutely a joy to interact with and are extremely knowledgeable about the dishes.
The space on the small side (approx 6 indoor tables and 2 outdoor tables)but is beautifully decorated.
Specials posted daily online as well as online ordering available.
It's a hidden gem of Pittsburgh. Family owned and operated.
Seriously this place raises the bar for vegan food in Pittsburgh. Go check them out if you haven't already.

Perfectly seasoned, delicious, deeply satisfying brunch - Edit
We had an indulgent (and frankly cheap!) brunch here, getting the doubles, a coconut bake and their calypso rice special to split between us, and I was struck by how pleasantly full without feeling weighed down for the day. I was particularly taken by the calypso rice with creole tempeh, which was a perfect balance of sweetness, acidity and light but noticeable spiciness. Highly recommend!

Incredible vegan Caribbean food; an instant favorite - Edit
Cute spot in the Northside standing out by being one of the few fully vegan restaurants in Pittsburgh. The plantains were caramelized and seasoned to perfection. The bowls were hearty and delicious, especially with the mango chutney sauce we each had. The sorrel was also delicious, would order everything again and will definitely be coming back.
