Savoy Grill - 1.5 Stars

Overpriced bland food. You are paying for the location / Gordon Ramsay name but my 10 year old nephew can make better tasting food than I had here. I had to add loads of salt in order for it to be edible. The person I dined with ate all non-vegan stuff and he had the same feedback about his food. We both were very disappointed and wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

Token vegan...

Wanted a special place for a special occasion and saw there was a separate vegan menu.
Service was arrogant and rushed, we’d just received our pre dinner drinks and the first course was on the table.
Food was average, pea soup that just covered the bottom of the plate and cauliflower risotto that was bland and lacked flavour.
Incredible that a supposedly top chef doesn’t get the importance of balancing dishes, no protein to be found.
Passed on dessert, enough disappointment for one evening.

boring, overpriced, punishment food

I was staying in a nearby hotel and wanted a vegan fine dining experience so I made the mistake of going to the Savoy. I should have known better, but I read a few nice things online in various places and thought I'd give it a go. I love vegan fine dining, but this was absolutely my worst experience with it.

First, their menu was wrong and they brought me a dish I didn't order. I had to double check it was actually vegan - they said they just gave me the other vegan soup since that is what they were cooking and the menu was not yet updated to reflect it. It was a pumpkin soup. For £9.50 it better be darn good, but it was mediocre at best. I have made better pumpkin soup myself.

Then, I ordered the salt-baked celeriac with Swiss chard and puffed rice. I'm pretty sure they just steamed the celeriac. Also, it was just some steamed veggies and a separate bowl of kale (not Swiss chard, ha!) with some veggie broth! Honestly one of the most boring dishes I have ever had in my life.

I did give all of this feedback directly to the restaurant - I told the waiter I felt like I was being punished for being vegan. I didn't bother to order dessert because I knew at that point it would be disappointing. They did send the manager over and while he did listen, his bottom line was that this was a meat restaurant so what did I expect? I said if they were going to have a vegan menu then they should at least try, and I suggested they add any protein to the menu. A bean? A lentil? Anything?

Don't go here on purpose. Only go here if for some reason your family absolutely MUST go here and you want to make sure you have anything to eat. It will be boring, but it will be food. A 1970s version of dietetic, bland vegan food, but a half a cup of veggies nonetheless.

Cons: boring, overpriced, punishment

Fine dining at the top end of town

If you want class then this is the place to go. When booking make sure you request the vegan (or vegetarian) menu and the waiters will all be aware of this when you arrive. There's a three course selection and as you'd expect the food is of high quality and delicious. There's a lengthy wine list but some of the prices per bottle are up into four figures.
Between two of us we ate the whole vegan menu (two choices per course) and while there were no stand-out dishes everything was first class. The waiting staff were helpful and friendly and very knowledgeable about the food.
Recommended for very special and extravagant occasions.

Pros: Separate vegan menu, Very high quality food and service

Cons: Expensive
