Odd Environment, Not Worth the Cost

Very fancy, very expensive vegan food. We paid about $100/person for dinner. The entire dinner experience lasted 2.5hrs.

We were there in the fall of 2016. The hotel is very nice. We found it easy to call to make a reservation and easy to find.

We were a bit confused as to where we were meant to park our rental car.

The environment was a bit rigid and not very relaxing. We felt like something was constantly expected of us and we didn't know what.

The wait time between each small plate varied but was around 10-15min. We had a lot of down time. The server didn't check on us very frequently. The entire meal lasted for 2.5hrs. The food was pretty good, but not the best we've had. We were very full when we left.

The chef prepared each plate fresh and the presentation was very unique.

We were led from the entrance of the hotel to the restaurant upstairs. It was dimly lit and the decor was quite fancy. The tables and booths were large and created a bit of privacy between guests. When you walk in there is a bar and the cooking area to the right, while the seating is to the left facing windows.

I had to go to the bathroom during our 2.5hr dinner and the workers watched me as if I was being suspicious. It was very odd and that is how the whole environment felt.

In our opinion it was a very unique experience but probably not worth what we paid.

Pros: Offer Vegan Options

Cons: Environment & staff come off rude and unwelcoming, Expensive

Some of the best vegan food in Japan

I often find that non-vegan but vegan-friendly restaurants in Japan tend to simply "remove" animal products from their dishes, rather than creating something totally new. That's why I was so pleased with my dining experience at Sankara.
I stayed at the hotel for a few days with a friend working on a project and every meal I had there was an absolute delight. From breakfast to dinner, the chefs at Sankara continued to offer delicious food at every meal. My friend, who isn't vegan, eventually switched over to the vegan cuisine when he saw how amazing everything looked (and he has since become a vegetarian. Baby steps...).
I won't go through every meal, but a few of the highlights were:
-homemade scones and jams at breakfast
-squash steaks marinated in soy sauce
-fried mushroom burgers
-tofu cheese
-deep fried veggies and herbs from the hotel garden
-mango tofu ice cream
-strawberry pudding

In sum, everything that I ate there was created uniquely vegan and the quality rivaled some of the best vegan restaurants I know. If you ever have a chance to visit yakushima, and are interested in a night of fine dining, I can't recommend Sankara enough.

Pros: unique vegan cuisine, local, organic produce, friendly staff

Cons: pricey
