Nice garden, bad value for food and service

Meat-packed, caged birds, slow service. High prices. Perhaps there has been a change of management, but this does not have to be on HappyCow.

Uninspired, expensive food & bad service

We went here with high expectations based on the reviews. However, when we arrived the amount of vegan options on the menu were underwhelming. The staff was not very eager to help out either - rather bored and annoyed with us.
The kombucha we ordered was okay, but no more than about 100ml - 3 gulps and it was gone. Our soup was okay but nothing special. The two main dishes we had were uninspired, bland, basically bean-paste, guacamole and crispy tacos - twice over. Considering the very high prices, by Guatemalan standards, this was unacceptable and disappointing.
The service didn't improve either and we were glad to leave the place. If you want good, local and vegan food, you can find much better and much cheaper options on the street.

Pros: Nice garden

Cons: Bad & expensive food, Bad service, Caged birds

caged birds watching me

This place has an incredibly beautiful back courtyard and a peaceful atmosphere. I'd say it is over priced even for Antigua and there were only a handful of vegetarian options. I had the vegetarian enchiladas. The menu warns that these are not Mexican enchiladas. It was basically two fried hard tortillas piled high with pickled cabbage and beets. I had something similar at another restaurant but it was much better with a layer of avocado. This one was not to my liking at all. The big downer for me was that the back patio had several birds in cages. I know this is common in Latin America but not something I enjoy and I think other vegans might be interested to know this.

Pros: beautiful space

Cons: expensive, not many options, birds in cages

2 visits - 2 absolutely different experience. Food was amazing, heaps of vegan options

First time I was sitting in the bar area. Girls who worked there were so good. English was perfect. Menu Modifications are possible and many options available. I am not a burger person, but there is an option of vegan burger and a sandwich. I had Thai salad and Corn Tostadas all was really good!! Staff was amazing and willing to accommodate my needs with no problem. English menu made it easy as well. Couldn’t ask for more accommodating atmosphere! :)
However, the next day we had a dinner in restaurant area (same menu). Restaurant area is all in the garden - very beautiful and big. However, non of waitress spoken english. Service was really slow (had to wait 20mins for the lemonade) food took long as well.. that’s the reason I took 1 * back.

Pros: english menu, english speaking staff in bar area, menu can be modified , great atmosphere

Cons: restaurant area and service there sucks, pricey

Surprise!

I am visiting Antigua with a group of 7 Vegans, tried Sabe Rico based upon Happy Cow review. We were absolutely blow away!

Our group is very well traveled and as such can have relatively high expectations surrounding vegan cuisine. Three weeks ago we were in NYC for three nights, Sabe Rico would compare favorably with some of the better NYC Vegan Restaurants!

We had; Open Veggie Sandwich, Three types of Hummus, Three types of Guacamole, Hot Tamale, Pache, etc..., all of which were “to die for”. Couple that with polite efficient service, what’s not to like.

Okay but wouldn't go back..

Unless you want a Portobello Burger or Veggies fried tacos (Guatemala style) there isn't that much vegan stuff and it's not marked on the menu. I was thrilled to get eggplant curry and requested without cheese and they said it's already in it.

My mango strawberry smoothie was SO goooood!

The menu says baked potatos but it's actually French fries, just a little fyi.

it is a beautiful atmosphere and they have chocolates without dairy :)

As a vegan I probably wouldn't go back.

Pros: Atmosphere, Good smoothies, Chocolates

Cons: Not that many veg options

Beautiful Gardens, Wholesome and Healthy Food, and Pleasant Atmosphere!

Sabe Rico is a beautiful and charming restaurant serving healthy, wholesome, organic and vegetarian-friendly food and their extensive menu features both authentic Guatemalan and international cuisine.

I ate here for lunch and ordered the Mediterranean Salad and a banana and strawberry smoothie, both of which tasted very fresh, natural, flavourful and tasty. The tables were scattered throughout a gorgeous garden filled with lush vegetation, which was my favourite part about this restaurant, aside from the delicious food! It was such a pleasant and serene setting to enjoy a healthy meal. The natural garden setting felt like an oasis in the middle of the city and I loved the relaxed and laid-back atmosphere. The service was also fast and friendly.

There was also a bakery, deli and small store at the front of the building selling sandwiches, baked goods, kombucha and other healthy bottled drinks, gourmet chocolates, jams and more. After you walk through the small store and cafe at the front of the building, you will arrive at the spectacular gardens behind the building.

I have nothing but positive things to say about this restaurant and it was a very enjoyable place to eat lunch. They also serve breakfasts and are open during some evenings. I would highly recommend eating here if you are looking for a delicious healthy meal in Antigua!

Pros: Beautiful Garden Setting, Peaceful Atmosphere, Delicious Vegetarian Food & Extensive Menu

In the shadow of a volcano

I was only passing through for the night and had a walk through town in the afternoon before heading out for dinner in the evening. The buildings are very unassuming from the outside and Sabe Rico was no different. At firs the chocolate shop threw me off and then when I walked through to the back it felt like I was in someones garden - but scattered arround in their own little corners were tables. Great atmosphere and lovely gardens. I had a fantastic vegan gluten free meal - with a guacamole starter and hybiscus drink. I found the lentil stew hit the spot and left very satisfied and motivated enough to wtite a review!

I cant compare to anywhere else but when I left I thought back to 2 American girls I saw with a domino pizza box in their hands and thought to myself they have come all this way and are missing out on a great experience - all in the shadow of a volcano.

Pros: Wide selection , Has organic / local meat options, Traditional and international

Cons: I was eating alone, cant give it 5 stars

Decent choice for vegetarians, but a bit hyped

A good number of vegetarian/vegan options, but a lot of meat on the menu as well. Staff is knowledgeable. Beautiful garden. Food was okay and not particularly great value (small portions). The place seems to be a health-food store, food seller, and chocolateria as well. The chocolates were not great. Overall, they seem to be trying to do too much with the result that the core business - good food presumably - may suffer. Nonetheless, it has a lot of choices for vegetarians.

Many tasty options, beautiful garden

The food was really good. The menu has a vegetarian section and other vegetarian options in other parts of the menu. Most were vegan or could be made vegan. I especially recommend the amazing portobella sandwich, so delicious we both ordered a second (it's really small though, you may *have* to order a second). The lentil stew was fine but boring. The chili relleno was tasty. The garden we ate in was really beautiful. It was lovely.

Pros: pretty, yummy, many options
