good vege udon

The staff were lovely and knew right away what vegan was. They explained they had an udon set which was all vegetable based.
The udon was quick and tasty.
Certainly somewhere to visit while at Nara.

Pros: clear vegan options displayed. , quick, cheap

great place

We walked in nara Park hungry and tired and stumbled into this little place. It is a small and cozy family restaurant with great atmosphere! We got two sets of udon noodles and it was awesome, fills you up instantly. Be sure not to miss it when you come here!

Nice little place

Lovely little place in the middle of Nara park. If you get the vegetarian udon option, it comes with tea and it's really nice! Good service too.

Pros: Nice and quiet place, good location

Cons: Only one vegan option

noodles, sake and deer watching

This was a lovely, quirky and quiet place. Good Vegan noodles and we enjoyed some sake too - it was freezing outside - snow showers. Sweetly designed restaurant which felt a bit like eating at my grandmothers - very homey. Yummy food, tea and ambience.

Great Lunch Spot

We really liked stopping here for some yummy vegan ramen whilst patting the friendly deer in Nara park. It was very affordable and tasty and the elderly lady knew exactly what vegan was and it is clearly labelled in English. We also had the Azuki beans and motchi for dessert which was yummy. Not many traditional ramen places cater for vegans so it was great to be able to try them.

Pros: Tasty vegan ramen, Great location

Cons: More vegan options would be nice

Simple noodles in Todaiji area

There is very limited vegetarian options in Nara, so I was glad I found this place by chance. Yes, there is the very nice Kinatae restaurant, but you may not want to make your way to the other side of the city if you are enjoying yourself in Nara Park.

This is a simple noodles house within the Todaiji compound. It's one of the few shops/restaurants along the path from the Todaiji main shrine to Nigatsudo.

If you go into the restaurant, on the table, you find there is a note showing an item "Thick Japanese wheat noodles for Vegetarian. All material derived from plants!"

It was just 700Y nett including a cup of green tea. It's simple and satisfying. There is some vegetables and seaweed in the noodles.

On the menu, there were also a few mushroom soba/udon items. They look vegetarian, particularly the soy sauce broth one, but it is unclear if the broth has fish stock. I don't speak enough Japanese to clarify, so I just went with the vegetarian noodles.

Besides noodles, the restaurant also serves a few desserts that are vegetarian, such as rice cake with adzuki (red beans).

This restaurant is convenient if you are feeling hungry within the Todaiji area. I stayed in Deer Park Inn nearby and had my early dinner here at 4:15pm.

Pros: convenient location, inexpensive

Cons: limited menu, closes early
