My friend and I checked out this place for lunch just after they opened, and both got the medium thali (all vegan except my friend's yogurt ?dal). The naan was freshly made and so yum, as were the curries, which were pretty spicy but not at all heavy. Was also a very reasonable price. Definitely recommended!
I ordered two Ras Vatika special dosa, and completely unprompted she asked me if I was vegan. First time that's ever happened to me. I said yes, so she swapped out the yoghurt for a tamarind sauce. (I wasn't wearing any vegan paraphernalia haha)
Dosa is great, I love those flavours. It's a basic restaurant and the atmosphere is nice, which is good because there's usually a bit of waiting. 15 minutes for takeaway dosa typically, I think because they make it fresh.
Just have had my sumptuous Gujarati thali here. There are plenty of Indian restaurants around in the city but this one reminisced most with the genuine Indian taste. Ample quantity, smiling hosts ready to refill whatever you ask. Moreover, super hygienic conditions for simple yet genuinely tasty food. Little far from CBD but worth a visit.
At Ras Vatika you can eat for under $10, and the food is very good. Its not the best indian food in Auckland but its still really great and I am never disappointed.
Everything is vegetarian and most things can be made vegan or are vegan anyway such is the nature of indian cuisine.
Found out the ladies name is Kaila because was wearing a Kaila Jacket he he. The Dahi Poori is sooo yum. Six pieces for around $7-9. Mouth tantilising taste these Poori are with no onion or garlic. Little things that you are meant to put in one go in your mouth, open really wide now. Not much more for people that don't eat onion or garlic unless you order in advance or happy to have a potatoe curry. Can eat the cutlets with the sweet sauce too.
Ate there for the first time a few weeks back. It was good, inexpensive Indian food, and they were happy to adapt for vegans. The place is nothing special to look at, and all things considered, the food wasn't good enough to bring me back in future (there are better Auckland options - consider Satya, a wonderful meat/veg place that caters to vegans, and is not listed on Happy Cow), but if you are around, or looking for a good cheap feed, this place will do the trick. It is better quality than Rasoi, but not "great".
The guy who was serving me said that the currys were all vegan and the roti. So i got two currys the vegie curry and the yellow potato and poppy seed curry. The vegie curry was quite spicy and didn't taste that great. The potato curry was great. When i left i asked to have a roti for teh road and he said it had dairy in it... so i was quite annoyed since i asked him when i arrived if it was vegan.
