Two Time Loser - Edit
My first experience with Rangoon Ruby was ordering takeout for four people during a busy holiday. Ours was one of many take out orders they were juggling. We picked up our food, and as I was unpacking it I noticed a dish was missing. Called them and they said they'd credit it back to my card. No big deal.
Read moreThen as I'm dishing out the supposedly vegan soup, I noticed a big hunk of something that didn't look like it came from a plant. Closer study revealed that it came from a chicken. Seriously? WTF? Now we're down two dishes. I called them again and the manager said he'd credit the soup back to my card.
Two dishes down and our holiday meal was not very festive. A week later there was still no credit on my card. So let's recount...one dish missing, meat in the "vegan" soup and no refund for those dishes.
That would be enough to keep me from ever going back there, but fast forward six months and I'm with a group of people and they want to go there. Am I gonna be the party pooper? No. Besides, maybe they deserve a second chance.
Well the second chance is their last chance. All seemed to be fine until one of my dining companions discovered a hair in the tea leaf salad. A nasty wiry hair that may have been human or maybe canine or who knows. But it was a hair and didn't belong in a salad or any other item presented for human consumption.
This is my first time leaving a one star review and sadly Rangoon Ruby doesn't even deserve that star. But if you like vegan food that isn't vegan or finding unidentified hairs in your food, then by all means, this is your place. For everyone else, just find someplace, anyplace else.

Flavorful vegan options - Edit
Ordered the mango tofu and northern friend tofu with a side of coconut rice and it was all delicious. The tofus were more of a bean curd though. Many vegetarian items are already vegan, but ask to confirm. Don’t drink the water that’s already on the table unless you want to spend an extra $9.

Great lunch spot in Palo Alto - Edit
I was in Palo Alto for work to meet colleagues I had not seen in 3-4 years! We needed a place to celebrate the occasion. Burmese food is something I miss moving out of the Bay Area so they indulged and Rangoon Ruby became an easy choice.
Read moreNot saying you should get what we got, but you should probably get what we got:
- Samosas
- Tea leaf salad
- Mixed veggie curry
- Fiery tofu and veggies
- Eggplant and garlic
Make reservations. Lunchtime gets busy. You can order and pay by scanning the QR code on the table. For better (or worse), very minimal interaction with your waiter. Seems to be a thing in the Bay Area that I have yet to see at scale elsewhere.
