Solid vegan ramen, usually an odd experience - Edit
The ramen here is good. The restaurant is in the heart of Japan town and is in a fun atmosphere. The service and responses and be hit or miss. I highly recommend getting a spice bomb marked with (V) to give your ramen some kick

Clueless staff - Edit
This second-floor ramen restaurant served the strangest vegan ramen I've ever had: who puts sweet potato fries in a bowl of soup? I also moved the vegetable kakiage onto a side dish to keep it from getting completely soaked. The server also didn't really know which appetizers were vegan or available. Initially, I was told they didn't have any seaweed salad, and then she found out the Impossible gyoza had oyster sauce, and finally the vegetable kakiage batter had egg in it (which leads me to question whether the vegan ramen really is vegan). So we finally came full circle when she came back a third time and said that they actually do have seaweed salad. But it didn't come out until we were almost done with our ramen. It was also partially frozen and tasted pretty much like what I could get from Nijiya Market. There was quite a lot of it, so I asked for a takeout container. It was the worst designed takeout box I'd ever encountered, and the melting seaweed ice water kept leaking from the lid. Not impressed and will not be returning.

It didn't sound enjoyable. How was the ramen 🤔?

Mediocre at best. I had to redeem the vegan ramen genre by going to Marufuku a few days later!

Very omni - Edit
This place is super meat heavy and a bit nauseous to be in given the amount of meat in here. Wish that they had more vegan options, the noodles weren’t bad but they were way too expensive for what they were.

Bland ramen - Edit
Very bland ramen with weird ingredients like sweet potato fries and a sweetcorn fritter. A single piece of delicious tofu skin but the rest of it was really not nice.

Bland and kind of odd - Edit
Not a great ramen. Weird ingredients in it like sweet potato fries and this carby fried thing. Def better vegan ramen out there. Waraku 2 min away has an impossible meat ramen. They were sold out when we went which is why we tried this place. TBH disappointing. Nice outdoor seating and staff though.

This is a great vegan option. - Edit
Loved all the additions to the ramen. The fried patty and sweet potato fries were delish. Lots of flavor in the vegan broth.

Yummy food, wish there were more vegan options - Edit
I shared the Tofu bun with some other people, that was pretty delicious. Tried the vegan ramen which was the only main course option for vegans. It was nice, but agree with the other reviewer that broth was a touch bland.
Read moreThere's not a lot of vegan-ness going on in Japan town so I appreciate that they have a couple things on the menu. It's a fine option for the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there. And it would be nice to have maybe one other main dish.
Otherwise, the ambience was nice and they had a good selection of sake and beer.

Nice options but bland broth - Edit
Cool atmosphere, but on the loud and dark side. Yamadaya tofu bun was the best appetizer, kakiage mostly just tasted like fried onions, and gyoza was passable. While I really appreciate their commitment to vegan ramen, the broth was really bland (needs ginger, garlic, and salt!). Even getting the spicy version didn't help; it increased the heat without increasing the flavor. Decent thin noodles and good mensho and tofu though. SF really just doesn't have great vegan ramen in general, unfortunately.

good ramen! - Edit
The ramen is very good here and the veggie croquette is a must. The vegan ramen is literally called the vegan. I don’t understand why I can’t give 5 stars as it seems unfair to a local restaurant. The service is fast considering I went with a party of three during the Cherry Blossom Festival. You can even check in on the yelp app in order to wait in line so you can do other things around Japantown while waiting for your table. I would say it’s quite moderately priced so that’s a plus. Would definitely come again.

Ramen Yamadaya - Edit
My dining partner and I really liked the vibe of this place, as well as the fact that they offered a vegan option for me. The restaurant played a lot of alternative 90's music--which I'll take any day over the stuff that's on the radio now--which is something I did not expect at a ramen place...that was a nice change though! My soup was really good, but not perfect. I would certainly eat at Ramen Yamadaya again though. If you order a vegan dish, BE SURE TO SPECIFY VEGAN, because sometimes they assume vegetarian and only one noodle offering is vegan.
