Bad Vegan Ice Cream

I give them credit for having vegan options, but the ice cream itself was simply terrible. I ordered what was supposed to be a cookies and cream shake, and it was 100% not cookies and cream or anything like it. It was vanilla base with extremely bitter chunks of chocolate in it. Unpleasant. Realizing I couldn't make it more than a few sips, I decided to order something else, something that had the description of it online so I knew exactly what the flavor was supposed to be: chocolate-chocolate chip. The ice cream base was barely sweet, and the chocolate chips were, again, extremely bitter. Overall, it was a terribly disappointing experience. I don't know if there are other vegan ice cream options around Ithaca, but I personally think you'd be better off buying a pint of the non-dairy Ben & Jerry's.

Good vegan ice cream, not great vegan burgers

We went there for dinner with family we were visiting. We keep to a Vegan diet and our daughter Vegetarian, while her husband is omniviore. All of were able to get dinner and ice cream treats afterwards. Our Vegan diet is about personal health so we are more flexible than some others might be about the fact that the Vegan burgers and veggies are cooked on the same grill as meat. For the same reasons we did not check to see if the ice cream cones were Vegan. Anyone who is concerned about such details should check and might end up eating elsewhere depending on what they find out. Alternatively, if one orders ice cream in a cup that should be acceptable for most people who keep to a Vegan diet.

Our food order tonight:
White Bean Lentil Burger: Whole Wheat Roll, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Chipotle aiolin, *Fried Onions, Jalapeno, No Extras

Add Side Field Green Salad, honey mustard, No Drink

Crispy Chicken Cobb Salad; Fried chicken breast, hard boiled egg, field greens, roma tomato, cucumber, avocado, carrots, choice of dressing

Balsamic Vinegrette Dressing

White Bean Lentil Burger: Whole Wheat Roll, *Grilled Bell Peppers,
*Grilled Mushrooms, *Grilled Onions, No Extras

Add Side Field Green Salad, Basalmic, No Drink

Black Bean Burger: scratch made vegan black bean burger has a touch of BBQ flavor. Whole Wheat Roll, *Grilled Bell Peppers, *Grilled Mushrooms, *Grilled Onions, Jalapeno, Tomatoes, Lettuce,
Add Avocado, Add on Sweet Potato Fries, No Drink

Our deserts:

Junior Scoop Vegan, Cup, Vegan Chocolate Chunk gf,

Junior Scoop Vegan, Cup, Vegan Vanilla Bean gf

Junior Scoop, Cup, Black Raspberry

Junior Scoop, Cup, Bittersweet,

1 Scoop Vegan, Sugar cone, Vegan Chocolate Chunk gf

2 Scoop, Vegan, Waffle Cone, Vegan Mint Choc Chunk gf, Vegan Wild Berry

The vegan burgers are an alternative for those who don't want commercial Vegan burgers. We liked the black bean burger better in terms of texture but both were mushy, and didn't have much flavor. We probably would not get either again. The sweet potato fries were good, not great. The side salads were surprisingly generous.

Everyone liked the ice cream. The Vegan ice cream all were very good.

It is possible to get Vegan shakes and vegan sundaes, which we did not try tonight.

Pros: Ice cream, Well marked menu, Helpful staff

Cons: Advertises vegan burger cooked seperate from meat, Vegan burger cooked on meat grill, Not great vegan burgers

Family friendly

This is a fun, large, family-friendly ice cream parlor with a bunch of vegan ice cream offerings. I had a very pepperminty peppermint ice cream; a bit sweet, but quite satisfying.

BTW, I wrote to the managers about the status of their vegan ice cream. They confirmed that the vegan ice cream uses *agar* gelatin (i.e., the gelatin is vegan) and does not use eggs (the non-vegan ice cream, on the other hand, does use gelatin and eggs).

Much more than just ice cream

Ate ice cream first trip- 4 vegan options available as scoops, shakes or sundaes too. Came back for burgers (2 kinds) and fries - made in their own basket and oil. Loads of toppings available for burgers. Sweet potato fries and spicy regular fries. Generous portions.

Pros: Large portions, Tasty

Cons: Order not exactly what we had picked, Would like more ice cream options, Long wait just to get two cups of ice cream

Great ice cream

They have a big variety of vegan ice cream. I had chocolate one which was really tasty and enjoyable. I would recommend this place if you love ice cream. By the way cream wasn’t super sweet.

Vegan ice cream

Purity has a separate vegan section on the menu with a few rotating specials. I had the oat milk blueberry pancake which is a vanilla based ice cream with blueberry swirls and maple syrup which was great! The server didn’t know if there were any vegan cone options and offered me a GF one so I just got it in a bowl.

Cons: Expensive, Staff unaware of vegan options

All of the Purity Ice Cream flavors contain eggs and gelatin

I was so excited to see the large selection of vegan flavors at Purity ice cream, until I inquired and learned that none of Purity's own flavors are vegan, let alone even vegetarian. They all have gelatin in them! And egg!

They have some soy based vegan flavors produced by a distributor, but they're mediocre at best. The mint was very icy and had a sickly color. The cookie dough was fine.

I think they should make it more clear that none of their ice cream is vegetarian, as that's something most people would never think of. Why is there gelatin aka ground up animal body parts in ice cream??

Pros: Some soy flavors

Cons: Gelatin and egg in all Purity ice cream flavors, Soy ice cream was blah

Sweet ice cream

I tried the vegan soy ice cream “triple threat” (chocolate base with cookie dough and fudge bits). I was happy when I walked in to see that there was a decently large selection of vegan ice creams, but I found the flavor I tried was sweeter than I like (I am not a health vegan, I only care about taste), and didn’t have as good of a texture as other ice creams I’ve had. I still finished my cone though, and if you like really sweet foods it’s the place to go!

Pros: Decent selection , Good flavor choices, Cones and shakes available

Cons: Too sweet (in my opinion), Texture slightly off

Disappointed.

The ice cream is soy based except for one almond milk choice. There is such great dairy free ice cream out there… but it’s not here. And it’s very pricey.

Pros: Friendly staff

Cons: Need to up their game on vegan ice cream.

Still can enjoy Purity!

Before I went vegan, I was a big fan of Purity Ice Cream and came here all the time. I'm so glad that they have vegan flavors now!!

I got a two scoop dish of Triple Threat Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and it was great!! The Triple Threat is a chocolate base with cookie dough and brownie bites. I ended up liking that better than the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough!!

Purity is pricey, but it's always been that way. Overall, a great, nostalgic visit for me, and a great place to visit for anyone in Ithaca.

Pros: Delicious vegan options

Cons: Expensive

Pretty good

Their vegan flavors are OK; they kind of suffer from that general soy-based ice cream flavor/mouthfeel, but are good as shakes.

Cons: Expensive

Local Ice cream shop that's Vegan friendly

Last I know they use Chicago soy dairy. Not a huge fan when used as cone/cup ice cream. Recommend the Vegan milkshakes. They also recently started serving brunch & lunch menu. The lunch menu has better vegan options.

Pros: Vegan friendly, options clearly marked. Indoor & , outdoor seating. On-site Parking.

Cons: Parking is limited & store is where two main one , way roads intersect. They recently added parking , about a block away. Otherwise park on S.Meadow.

Great choice for lunch, brunch, or dessert!

Purity is a fun and casual restaurant that offers great vegan options for lunch, brunch as well as vegan ice cream and toppings. The have a separate vegan section on their lunch menu with delicious sandwiches. all are great but I especially the seitan sandwich and the happy bowl! Weekend brunches are great too with vegan pancakes, Tofu scramble and a breakfast sandwich. They make the tastiest homemade jams for the pancakes and their homemade english muffins, which are very good and biscuit-like. Quite a few excellent vegan Ice creams. Definitely recommend!

Pros: Casual and fun cafeteria like atmosphere, Family friendly, Great food!

Cons: not all vegan ;(

Vegan menu is great

I was surprised and happy to see an entire vegan section on their menu. I tried two flavors...cookie dough and triple threat and they were tasty (though very sweet). I also saw Purity makes breakfast sandwiches, including a vegan option.

vegan lunch, brunch, and triple threat shakes

Purity is one of my favorite weekend brunch destinations and I regularly pick up sandwiches to go after work. They have my order memorized 😅
It's also a great place to bring visiting friends and family because there is something for everyone on their menu!

New vegan food!!

Purity recently underwent renovations, and they now serve brunch on weekends and lunch on weekdays. I'm not too much a fan of their vegan sorbet, but the food they serve is very good. They have options of that the average omnivore doesn't typically know of (ie cashew cheese sandwich, butternut squash mock and cheese, vegan caesar salad). The portions are pretty large. I had the bbq tempeh sandwich (sub. lettuce and tomato for slaw) with fries, and it was really good! My only complaint is that the fries were a bit on the salty side, and I was pretty tired afterwards. I am excited to try out vegan pancakes or french toast on a weekend sometime!

Pros: great selection of vegan food, large portions

Cons: a bit too salty, serves food limited hours, vegan ice cream is meh

sweetest ice cream ever

The vegan ice cream is made from coconut milk and is more icy than creamy. We tried the cookie dough, vanilla, and fair trade chocolate. All of them were waaaay too sweet for our taste. The good news is they have vegan waffle cones, but overall we were not very impressed.

Pros: vegan waffle cones, vegan chocolate sauce, all vegan items clearly labeled

Most vegan ice cream options in town!

I love living in this area because many places have vegan ice cream options. I have several of these places stored into my phone just so I can call and ask what the vegan flavors of the day are. Purity though has more vegan ice cream options than any other place currently in town and vegan cones to boot!

My typical favorite is a scoop of the Triple Threat (chocolate ice cream, chocolate chips, and cookie dough) in a waffle cone. Beware that their scoops are pretty large, so one scoop is usually plenty for most people. They also have vegan cupcakes and vegan ice cream cakes (to be ordered in advance).

In the summertime, we are regulars and they are even open all year round for anyone with an ice cream craving.

Pros: Vegan ice cream by Temptation Soy, Newly remodeled - good for groups, Open year round

Cons: Gets busy in the summer

Heaven!!

My family and I have been here several times on our visits to the area. It's an absolute must for vegan ice cream! On our last visit we got giant waffle cones filled with soy-based ice cream. We had mint chocolate chip, chocolate chip cookie dough, and french vanilla. I honestly can't choose which was better. My 11 year old commented, "Why would anyone eat cow's milk when they can have this?" It truly is delicious!!

BEST VEGAN ICE CREAM!!!

You must, absolutely must order a soy "Hurricane" - it is a milkshake made with vegan ice cream (Chicago Soy, I prefer the cookie dough or french vanilla) and candy mixed inside (oreos!!). It is heaven. They also have vegan cupcakes occasionally, AND you can order a vegan/gluten free ICE CREAM CAKE!!!!

Pros: Vegan ice cream cake, Vegan milkshakes, Vegan toppings

Cons: Pricey

Gelatin-Abstainers: Beware!

As of my last visit (early May 2012), I noticed a sign mentioning that all Purity-made ice cream flavors contain gelatin. Though I know some vegetarians can go either way on gelatin, I prefer to avoid it, and was therefore so disappointed that I had to order Dryer's sorbet at this Ithaca landmark! (They also have some pretty good (gelatin-free) soy ice cream--another veg-friendly option, albeit with only a few flavors.)

Pros: Vegan-friendly, Clean, friendly space

Cons: Gelatin in all house-made ice cream
