Very unimpressive - Edit
This was a very disappointing meal with not particularly great food and not the warmest of service. Starter was tasty - I had pea velouté, which was one of three possible options. My date, though not vegan, had a vegetarian choice and said it was okay. We both had vegan mains (there were 3 options), celeriac burger and tagliatelle. The burger was very nice but the tagliatelle very disappointing. It was just really bland. The cheese that was put on it was some sort of feta but honestly it tasted like the biolife feta cheese you get in supermarkets, and I felt a bit cheated. What to expect - it's not a vegan restaurant - but even still. I didn't think it a very friendly restaurant either. I wouldn't recommend at all.

Good starters, poor mains - Edit
We went here for a Christmas meal. There was a separate vegan menu with two starters and two mains. The starter I had was delicious- gnocchi with Jerusalem artichokes. It felt like a carefully considered dish, crisped root vegetables on a bed of indulgent purée. The mains did not continue in a similar vein. The first thing that struck me as odd was that the burger and chips were about the same size - I firmly believe a burger should always be bigger. Secondly the burger was a little flat. The portobello mushroom had been battered and deep fried, with mixed results. It was accompanied by a thin slice of out of season tomato that functioned mostly to make the bread wet. The side salad it came with was well dressed, zingy and a welcome relief from the rest of the plate. I didn’t go for dessert. As others have commented there was only a selection of sorbets. It felt a little as if they had carefully considered the starter for vegans, then kind of given up. I can only hope that if I return they will have applied the same thought to the whole menu.

Disappointing mains - Edit
It’s a bit of an upmarket place in Melrose, fantastic, friendly service and comfortable atmosphere. They had a separate vegan menu with two starters, two mains, two snacks and the always disappointing ‘selection of sorbets’. We had one of everything and the starters were incredible, real Michelin feel to it - attention to detail, super tasty, thought through and well presented. And then the mains were like a pub lunch - first of all both mains were burgers, one mushroom, one celeriac. They were no more than fine. Served with a mixed salad, which was again ‘fine’ and then a wee cup full of fries. They were yellow, tasteless and had lots and lots and lots of wee bits of crackling, bits of batter and small chip ends in them. Please start paying attention to your vegan options Provender; your starters and snacks promise of a fantastic experience which the mains very quickly ruin. Cannot fault the staff and service however! Be prepared to spend a bit of money - £6.70 for a beer and it’s not even a pint.

Seperate, although limited vegan menu. - Edit
Booked ahead and left a note that one of us was vegan and on arrival a vegan menu was already waiting on our table. Staff were accomodating and very friendly. The menu had changed somewhat from when we viewed it online so be aware that it may differ. The options were a little limited. Choice of sourdough or olives as snacks, salad or asparagus with purple sprouting brocolli for starters, for main you have a choice between a celeriac burger or a portobello mushroom burger and sorbet for dessert. Admittedly, both the asparagus with broccoli starter and the mushroom burger were both very tasty, however, I wish there were more options other than a burger for mains, especially as the people we were dining with are the type to avoid eating with their hands. Starters and dessert were little on the pricey side considering what you're getting, but the atmopsphere was nice and it was suprisingly quiet for a Saturday, perhaps because we were there early in the evening.
