Limited vegan options, but good - Edit
This was our second visit to Portage Bay Café, and our first visit to the South Lake Union location. The setting was great. The service was excellent. The food was fresh and generously proportioned.
Read moreAs with our first visit, vegan options were limited. However, a wonderful special was on the menu that was Incredible: it was a Buddha bowl With thick, fresh slabs of firm tofu, lentils, and lots of vegetables.
Another member in our group tried the vegan, gluten-free banana pancakes. Perhaps, because they were made with rice flour they were raw and mushy.
Portage Bay Café isn’t my first choice for extensive vegan fare. It is a worthwhile place to go to when our party includes non-vegan eaters or when we simply need a breakfast destination for location’s sake.
Pros: Excellent service , Fresh food, Generous proportions
Cons: Limited vegan options

Ah, not that great. - Edit
The vegan options were very limited and the farmer's hash (arguably an easy dish to make well) was basically a veg sauté that lacked flavour and badly needed something rich/some carbs. No one wants a bowl of (fairly plain) veggies (and a large piece of dry bread without any vegan butter?) for brunch. And definitely not for $20.

Poor vegan options - Edit
Vegan options limited and the vegan hash was very bland and boring. The meat and veggie options looked good but very bad for vegan options.

Pretty good food! - Edit
The banana pancakes and “the farmers daughter” were both pretty good, but not a ton of food for the price

Good breakfast - Edit
Seattle is short on good breakfast spots, but Portage Bay has several locations and is a reliable choice. The banana pancakes and berry bar never disappoint.

Wow, best vegan pancakes! - Edit
Ordered 2 full portions of the banana vegan pancakes (1 for me, 1 for my friend). And holy moly it’s such a huge serve, 1 portion alone could have sufficiently fed us both. So tasty and fluffy! And the fruit buffet we loved- plenty of fresh fruit, seed, nut, syrup toppings to choose from. We couldn’t finish our pancakes so brought the rest home with us!

Great food! - Edit
Really yummy vegan scramble. The vegan banana pancakes are okay, but I’d rather pancakes from Wayward.

Mediocre - Edit
Portions are big, but hash was missing potatoes and pancakes missing banana. Missed an espresso machine too. Service was pretty good.

Good serving size but food was bland! - Edit
Went with some friends for breakfast this morning and ordered the vegan hash. The only other options were Vegan banana pancakes or oatmeal, so I went with what seemed like the most interesting option. The hash itself was basically just a few slices of tofu atop a bunch of veggies and potatoes (luckily I added avo for extra flavor!!), and a piece of toast on the side. It tasted fine, but nothing special. They did have a pretty good local hot sauce that I poured over top, but at the end of the day it was really just basic vegetables and some plain tofu! Not worth it for the price, but at least it was a pretty large portion and I took some of it home for later.

Disappointed in Vegan Options - Edit
Very small selection of vegan options here and when my order of vegan hash came to the table, there were approximately 5 small pieces of tofu included. I'm guessing that isn't even close to the amount of eggs included in the non-vegan option. But what was most frustrating was that half-way through breakfast I discovered a piece of meat mixed into the hash. The server was apologetic and offered 50% off my meal, but it didn't quite seem like enough compensation.

Nothing Spectacular - Edit
Not the best option for vegans - they only had 3 vegan options when I ate there, and they were just okay. At least their house-made English muffins are vegan and good.

More Vegan Items Please! - Edit
There are only 2 vegan options for brunch here, but both are really good. The tofu scramble is totally different from what I make at home, and I'm thinking I need to switch. It was loaded with veggies and potatoes. The pancakes are great too. There's a fruit bar where you can load it up with all sorts of yummy stuff. I wish they had a vegan whip. I don't think they have vegan butter either.
Read moreI had to wait 30 minutes to get my table, even though I had a reservation. You can get a pitcher of mimosa to pass the time, so it's not too bad.
Pros: Delicious!, Pitchers of mimosa, Fruit bar
Cons: Long wait, Only 2 vegan items

Pretty Good - Edit
The Banana Pancakes were delicious--you get to pick toppings at a topping bar. They have fresh, organic fruit at the bar, along with syrup and some non-vegan butter, etc. However, the hash was disappointing-- my husband and I both ordered it and there were only two pieces of potato between our dishes. But, the veggies in the hash were great; they included more variety than you usually find (a variety of mushrooms, zucchini, eggplant, etc.).
