Very simple Cantonese ovo-vegetarian family-owned cafe. Usually some of the staff speak basic English. Plenty of vegan choices. Low prices. Sit down/take-away/dim-sum. Popular with locals. About 20 seats. They have a second location which is a 'takeaway only' counter at 604 Queens Road West - Kennedy Town - Hong Kong Island. Open Mon-Sun 8:00am-8:00pm.

Was good. Not anymore

Under new management. Same menu, but food is not good. Very disappointed. Saw all employees eating meat at one of the tables. Really vegetarian????

Great vege Chinese!

Delicious and unbelievable vegetarian alternatives to Chinese dishes. Massive servings too. We tried 3 dishes and loved them. The sweet and sour pork is amazing but the mapo tofu was a stand out!

Very convenient local food

Saw this restaurant just by walking out the mtr, it’s nice to have some local food. I really loved their noodles. It’s a bit pity that those noodles were a bit hard

Pros: Local food , Good location

Cons: Food wasn’t perfect

Very nice vegetarian food and mock-meats.

Some dishes are very nice, some are worse(for my European tongue). I recommend Sweet and Sour pork(A11 I believe), and fried Octopus(towards end of menu in deep fried section).

Good value for money

No frills Buddhist Chinese vegetarian food. Lots of dishes with mock meat, but you can find some without. The portions were huge, so recommend only ordering 1 dish per person.

Pros: Vegan/ vegetarian options, Reasonable prices and large portions

Cons: A bit on the heavy side, Decor is a bit dated

Decent local spot

Cosy local spot with decent value sets (as of July 2020 a one-person set including main, soup, and rice was $64 during peak and $54 off peak), serving a lot of classic local dishes. I had fried turnip cake and mixed mushrooms, with rice, soup, and soy milk.

I’d recommend booking especially for dinner as there are only a few tables, and only one large table which seats 8-10.

Pros: Good value, Cosy spot

Cons: Limited seating

Local vegetarian place

Lots of options. Staff speak some English which is helpful as a tourist! I liked the seating booths. The noodle with tahini and soy sauce was delicious , but the steamed veg buns tasted / texture seemed crumbly and a little old. It wasn't nice being served congee with a disposable thin small spoon but there didn't seem to be any other option. Would really prefer a regular spoon and chop sticks

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Fast service, Some items very yummy

Cons: Served with plastic spoon (even dining in), Some items a bit bland

If you like Buddhist veg, mock meat, etc.

I don't usually come here, as I don't really like to eat ersatz food (wheat gluten as BBQ pork/prawn/etc). But sometimes I just get a craving for some typical Chinese dishes.

The other review below, mentioning fish and seafood on the menu - this is mock meat, ie. "鱼香茄子" (salted fish with aubergine) - it's a sloppy, salty brown sauce with sludgy aubergine, which hits the spot for that particular craving.

ANYWAY
I came here for the "bird nest" dish; traditionally it's a lot of veg, some sort of seafood, and cashews inside of a fried basket of noodle/potato/taro.

Their quality has definitely gone downhill - the nest is now stale (as if they are re-frying it just for serving) and the portion is a bit smaller. They add some "fish ball" and "prawn" for the seafood part. It looks like they're relying a lot more on celery now. Back then (years ago?), they would've had more green beans and lily bulb.

I also had a pumpkin/tofu dish, which was fine.

It's probably better to stick to basic dishes.

Good vegan Chinese food!

This place is great! Some really lovely food at decent prices. Great meat substitutes in a range of textures. We had a sweet and sour pork today and was really tasty. The place itself is very rough around the edges but that is part of its charm.
I saw a review where someone mentioned that 'fish' was on the menu. I can assure you that fish is NOT on the menu as this is a veggie restaurant (if not completely vegan). As a HK raised Chinese person I can say that veggie restaurants almost always have a Buddhist ethos which doesn't encourage eating or killing or any animals or beings. So when it says 'fish' or 'pork' on the menu, it's a meat free, plant based version.
I visit the every time I'm around as it's great Chinese vegan food.

We were overcharged + fish is on the menu

I would only grant 1 star, but the rating system won't allow me to do that here. We enjoyed our meal but were disappointed to be overcharged (paid HK$150 but should have only paid HK$120). We decided not to fight it because the price was still not bad for 2 people compared to HK vegan prices overall, but after reading the reviews here that listed what others paid, it looks like they have probably raised their prices recently (besides starters, there was nothing below HK$60 for mains, and even then they decided to charge us at HK$75 per dish), and perhaps we looked like chumps. If this wasn't bad enough, we did catch what looked to be fish on the menu (although it's unclear...perhaps they just forgot to write "veg." before dish names as with other meal items), and it looked like someone was eating shellfish when we were getting up to leave. Overall, I was disappointed...I just felt like an idiot when I left (both about the fish and for being unapologetically overcharged).

Pros: Place where locals eat, Price ok for an HK veggie place

Cons: Clearly overcharged us by HK$30, Fish appears to be on the menu

Tasty

Ate here several times. Everything I tried is very tasty and just what I was looking to eat in town. Ended up satisfied every time.

The staff is pretty friendly and the price is very good as well as the portions. This is more a local eatery than a big restaurant. Recommended!

Still dreaming of this place...

Had an overnight layover in HK and our hotel was a short walk from this place. Ordered wantons that came with a sweet and sour sauce (with tons of fresh chopped veggies in it), pan fried noodles in black pepper sauce and the owner/manager gave us a dish of random "meats".
One of the best meals of my life. I will try to recreate this at home since I won't be back any time soon :-(

Po Lin Yuen Vegetarian Restaurant

Updated from previous review on Wednesday May 27, 2015

I was in here last weekend (May 2015). I was sitting eating away merrily when I couldn't help but notice the very strong smell of fish. On looking round I was then surprised to see that this was indeed fish. It was the period between lunch and dinner and the staff were on a break. They were sat at the table next to me eating a fish. I don't mean some HK mock fish or taro in pastry shaped like a fish. It was a fish. At the end there was a skeleton of its bones around which they had carefully cut away the fish meat.

I question whether that means that is a genuinely 100% vegetarian restaurant. The customer menu may be all vegetarian. The kitchen certainly doesn't appear to be all vegetarian.

As the other reviewers say there's also a take away place facing the street.

It's like a bunch of other all vego Chinese places in HK. Worth eating from if you are in the area but there's no special reason to make a trip to here if there's a similar place already closer to you.

Cons: Staff cook and eat fish on site

Dirt cheap, big portions

I think I got the most expensive thing on the menu, and 30 HKD later I had mushrooms and noodles coming out of my ears.

Pros: Cost effective, genuine

Cons: Not overly exciting venue

Excellent dim-sum.

Just had my breakfast.

A bowl of noodles with veggies, mushrooms & 2 pieces of taro cake dim-sum for HK$24 - a little over US$ 3.

Delicious!

.................................

Unbelievable value.

I have no idea how they can keep their prices so low.

Satisfying breakfasts for less than HK$ 25.

Many types of dim-sum for HK$ 2 per piece.

This is a great little cafe / restaurant with a very friendly crew running it.

I drop in for my breakfast at least twice each week.

They have a display cabinet stocked with packs of vegan instant noodles & more from Viet Nam - also at crazy low prices - ideal for curing late night munchie attacks.

Busy, busy, busy 12.00 to 13.30.

Shared tables.

English menu.

delicious food at bargain prices

Fantastic restaurant. For 3 of us it cost under 200HKD which is more than I have paid for one person in other places. Does a range of Chinese vegetarian meals, including many fake meat dishes, and tofu and vegetable dishes. The menu comes in English and Cantonese.

Pros: good value, tasty food
