Incredible

Whether you live here or just visiting, you have to go here. This place is not disappointment. Has something for everyone. They even have a small grocery section and a to go food section as well. I saw they were on DoorDash for that portion. They have various items on the menu ranging from, Mexican to Italian to some amazing sandwiches and even more. Very very well done and everything is fresh! Something that stood out to me also, was they make mock tails there as well. 10/10 #Veganuary

Pros: EVERYTHING , Great seating and atmosphere, Wonderful menu

Cons: Wish was on Uber eats haha

versatile plant-based food court lives up to expectations!

Plant City is a multi-story all vegan food hall with options including a casual cafe, a craft beer bar, a vegan grocery market, a Mexican restaurant (Besina), and an Italian restaurant (Double Zero). They were originally affiliated with Matthew Kenney restaurants but are now on their own path. Overall, Plant City is well-executed and reminiscent of the experience of Eataly in NYC. The biggest issue is trying to decide what you want to eat, since there are so many options. The cafe downstairs has draft local kombucha (from Luluna) and lots of appealing grab-and-go items. Many are on the healthier side with ingredients listed which I really appreciate. I brought home the chia pudding, the lentil salad, and the chickpea salad and ate them the next day and greatly enjoyed them all.

During our visit, they were doing renovations, so Besina and Double Zero were operating out of the same space (usually they are separate). Unfortunately, Double Zero's pizza oven was not operational, so they were unable to serve pizza. We had the signature lentil meatballs as an appetizer which were GREAT. They are savory and flavorful and topped with abundant delicious red sauce, cashew cheese, and fresh basil. Then, for our main courses, we pivoted to the Mexican side of the menu and ordered the burrito and the fajita bowl. These items were reminiscent of Bar Verde in NYC although not crafted with quite as much attention to detail. We also appreciated that they serve draft local kombucha from Luluna, although they unfortunately served it over ice!

Pros: Local kombucha , Many diverse food options, Healthy grab and go items

Cons: Some food items came out cold, Market was cute but not extensive enough, Kombucha served over ice

Pretty solid

It’s in a nice location with tons of street parking. There was someone that greeted me and explained how everything worked (greatly appreciated). Decided to dine American food lunch. Asked the bartender for her recommendations and rocked with it. They make everything in house except for some meatless balls in their Italian restaurant that uses some impossible products. Got the classic burger with guacamole, classic fries with beet ketchup and the Union craft beer.

Followed that up with an iced dirty chai latte. That hit the spot post meal. Overall a good meal and friendly staff. Just a bit pricey for my taste to dine regularly but when visiting for the day- treat yo self to a nice dining experience.

Pros: All plant based , Environment, Friendly staff

Cons: Pricey

Great Food, A Vegan’s Delight

Wow! The food was really good. My friend and I shared the nachos based on the waitress’s recommendation. They were delish. I had the jackfruit tacos and they were amazing. Our waitress was friendly, warm and welcoming. However, the staff on the first floor seemed a little put out but, it could have been just an off night for them.

Pros: Vegan Menu, Delicious Food

Good food. A little expensive

My wife and I came here and the food was really good. They have three restaurants with different types of food: american, mexican, and italian. We had the Italian restaurant and it was really good. I wish they had Tiramisu though!

Cons: Expensive

Tasty variety

We came here with some omni-friends to maximize our options, and we were not disappointed.

We really enjoyed the 3 dishes we tried:
Fettuccine alfredo from Double Zero (5/5⭐️) and the chiles rellenos (4/5⭐️) and churros with chocolate & caramel sauce (5/5⭐️) from Besina.

The only annoyance was that if you wanted to order from multiple vendors (upstairs and/or downstairs), you could only eat in the downstairs central area which was stuffy or outside.

Pros: Delicious options, Variety, PB grocery section

Cons: No nice, cross-vendor seating indoors, Groceries were expensive

Stroll in the Park..

Took a stroll through Innovation District Park in Providence and found this gem. So glad we passed up the food trucks and Beer Garden. Plant City is just across the walk bridge in a super cool repurposed downtown warehouse.
Visiting this place is a must for any HappyCow member!! Three different Vegan Restaurants, plant based food market, and a ready to garb and go prepared food section. We went with the Truffle Pizza from Double Zero… Spectacular!! So many choices.. regardless of who is in your party.. there is something for everyone. Great outdoor dinning space and super friendly staff.

Pros: Location , Selection, Drag Show Next Door

Cons: None

This is for Double Zero

After companions less stellar previous visit, Double Zero the Italian option was great
Nice spicy meatball starter.
Clean tasty Cesar salad.
Tagliatelle with wild mushroom was delicious.
Recommendation of churro dessert was spot on
Hope to visit again later in the year after returning from West Coast. This is a unique offering of multiple plant based cuisine in a single location

Inconsistent but sometimes wonderful

I find that I've been disappointed by Plant City many times and absolutely blown away a couple times.

Blown away: the spicy farro pepperoni pizza is wonderful. Incredible. Crunchy, tasty, sweet and salty, and a joy all around. I've gotten it twice. Pairs well with the fun lattes they have, like the turmeric or the blue moon. Also, the first few bites of a mushroom quesadilla from Bessina were delicious.

Disappointed: Then the rest of the quesadilla I realized was mega salty all the way through. A burger from the downstairs burger place was ok but I didn't understand the point of the odd beet ketchup. A buffalo chicken pizza was frankly pretty bad a while back.

So I've had a mixed bag of experiences here but I still appreciate the place a lot, plus the vegan groceries and desserts you can buy there. I still plan to hit it up and keep trying new things to figure out what I will and won't like. An adventure!

Pros: Spicy farro pepperoni pizza!!!! , Friendly staff and beautiful interior , Great lattes

Cons: Inconsistent quality of food, Expensive desserts

Nice dining at Besina and Double Zero

Fabulously located on the river with great outdoor seating, very bike friendly and a great spot for a date!! We tried Besina, the Mexican concept for lunch one day and the Italian concept, Double Zero, for dinner another night. Both had inventive, well executed menus though not a total knockout from either. Would come back to try more from both of these spots, as well as the other businesses in the market hall.

Double Zero:
We loved the deconstructed raw lasagne - I cannot emphasize how cool this dish is - cultured cashew ricotta, dollops of tomato sauce and pesto, and thinly sliced ribbons of raw zucchini. It’s phenomenal and I want to make it at home.
Not as great - the chili pizza. It doesn’t have enough toppings and was just an oily sheet of dry dough with globs of the same cashew ricotta.

Besina: We were pleased to be introduced to Tlayuda, a thin Oaxacan flat bread that they top with jackfruit, loads of cultured cashew crema, herbs, and avocado. My partner was crazy about it but i’m generally not totally convinced by the sweetness of jackfruit and it was a little too wet for my taste.
Not as great - the Tacos Dorados. Fried oyster mushrooms were heavy and dense and served with an aioli which contributed to the heavy flavors. Could be remedied with a lighter batter on the mushrooms and more of a salad/pickled veg component and it would be delicious.

Vegan Chic or Vegan Chicanery?

This review is so titled as it serves as an adjunct to my counterpart's/dining partner's review, which is simply titled, "Vegan Chic." To read a more detailed and masterfully written account of our dining experience (his fourth visit here; my first) head on over to: mark m braunstein. In the meantime, I will add my two cents and offer my perspective:

Initially, I was impressed with the layout, the decor, and the friendly staff. This was one of those rare occasions when first impressions proved misleading. We ordered a Truffle Burger and a Kale Quinoa Salad. The former was the consistency of a cooked, well-oiled coleslaw that was somehow formed into the shape of a burger - visually deceiving upon arrival; quickly revealing it's true character as soon as we attempted to cut it in half to be shared. The salad, which would otherwise be considered healthful and again appeared to be so, was swimming in a vinaigrette that was more oil than vinegar. The one saving grace of this otherwise disappointing meal (aside from the presence of my dining partner) was the Mocha Latte (mine with cashew milk; his with pistacio) and so, remaining hopeful yet too full for an in-house dessert, this admitted choc-aholic grabbed a Gluten-free Double Chocolate Cake Cup (a rare sort of indulgence for me these days) in the grab-and-go section, which I would later regret, wishing I had instead simply grabbed my coat and run for the door. To be fair, as someone who otherwise always reads ingredients before making a purchase, and in spite of its label being nearly illegible, I gave into my addiction and made this impulsive purchase, which I would later learn was indeed a very bad one, as it contained (among other things)high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated cotton seed oil! 🤑 Buyer Beware!

Call this Vegan Queen (now also predominantly WFPB since October 2023, in addition to being an ethical Vegan for the 16 years prior and to this day) a food snob if you must, but I calls it as I sees it. And I choose to call this dining experience the worst kind of April Fool's joke and we were the fools - guilty as charged.

Vegan Chic

As likely the largest veg restaurant outside of CA, PC belongs on your list of 100 veg restaurants to visit before you die. PC certainly puts diminutive RI on the HC map. Perhaps too esoteric for Providence, PC may better belong in Manhattan or Boston. While a marvel of furniture décor & dazzling dinnerware, after 4 years its gloss has begun wearing thin. All fads fade. Riding the waves of vegan chic, as a hotspot PC’s hotness seems to be cooling & its crowds thinning. Most customers at veg restaurants are not strictly veg. While we vegheads will remain veg, the larger population of non-vegheads may be moving on to some newer hotspot that serves the latest nouvelle cuisine, maybe even haute cuisine.

Indoors, the plastic plants serve as apt metaphors for Plastic City. White flour, white sugar & fried foods abound. The spongiform burger buns are all lame white flour. To its credit, except for seitan that is whiter than white flour, mock meats that make a mockery of veganism are absent here. Only if you dare, read the micro font ingredients on the grab-n-go desserts where you’ll find listed High Fructose Corn Syrup! Wait! It gets worse. As though industrial-grade Cottonseed Oil were not bad enough, PC’s is Hydrogenated! That is Trans Fat! Either Matthew Kinney has joined a carnivore conspiracy intent to rob vegans of their health, or this is a bad April Fool’s joke.

Nevertheless, the food is only secondary. The sad food poses as an excuse for serving coffee & booze. As tho 1 sit-down full bar were not enough, it has 3. If the booze does not dull your senses to the unremarkable food, the perpetually glowing barroom TVs will further distract you. So forget about the forgettable food. Don’t eat here seeking merely a culinary experience. Rather, come here to witness a cultural phenomenon. The food is not the point. PC is not about the food. PC is all about itself. It calls itself the Matthew Kenney Experience. I’d prefer simply a vegan food experience.

I’ve eaten here 4 times during the past 4 years. The 1st time because it was my 1st time. The 2nd time to introduce PC to a vegan friend visiting from CA. The 3rd time to bring a vegan friend visiting from Europe. Yesterday, my 4th time presciently on April Fool's Day, to bring the Vegan Queen of Queens NYC in order to reenforce what she already knew, that vegan restaurants really do exist beyond the orbit of Manhattan. If I ever eat here a 5th time, it will be to bring a vegan friend visiting from Antarctica.

Pros: Attentive & informative & knowledgeable waitstaff, Dazzling furniture & décor & dinnerware

Cons: Unremarkable & nutritionally-nil food, TransFat Cottonseed Oil & High Fructose Corn Syrup, Inadequate & inconvenient street parking

The vibes & food are immaculate

In my one day trip through Providence, I came here twice! First, I got their cake of the week - a guava cream cheese flavor, and it was oh so moist and, honestly, might be my favorite vegan cake I’ve had yet. I came back for dinner and ate at the restaurant on the 2nd floor (see picture for vibes) and ate the delicious fettuccini alfredo ($21). This place has it all - a cute little grocery with vegan staples and a grab-n-go section (where I got the cake), as well as (at least?) two restaurants, a smoothie bar, and more. All in all, very glad I happened upon this place. I stayed in downtown Providence and this was located just across the pedestrian bridge.

YUM YUM YUM!

In town for the night and after lots of searching it seemed like Plant City was the place to grab some vegan eats. I will spend nights dreaming of Double Zero’s Warm Creamed Spinach Dip & Toasted Flatbread. Love the idea for a vegan food hall - I want one in every city!

Pros: Easy online ordering platform, Great location with lots of parking nearby

Cons: Tad pricey, No indoor signage for mobile order pick up

An all vegan hall!!

We were really excited to visit Plant City and it was pretty awesome. Just to have an all vegan community with multiple restaurant options was pretty awesome. We ate at Newburger & had some of the best cauliwings I ever tasted. We also loved Double Zero’s pasta & pizza. We grabbed some baked goods and all was very, very good.

Pros: All vegan, Nice choices , ALL VEGAN IN ONE SPOT

Cons: Full bakery onsite would be great

Obsessed♡

Had a lovely dinner with my husband and in-laws at Double Zero this weekend. In general Plant City is one of my favorite places to go.

We shared a Ceasar Salad. I ordered the Pesto Pizza, my husband ordered the Eggplant Parm, my mother in law the bolognese, and my father in law the wild mushroom tagliatelle. Everthing was delicious, but always is here! Highly recommend a day visit to Providence, RI just to come here at least once during the trip 🤭 (last time we spent the weekend and come here 3 times).

Obsessed with all Matthew Kenney Cuisine brands, concepts, and collaborations we tried while living in or near NYC, RI and Boston: XYST, Double Zero (Full NYC restaurant, including former location in Boston), Bar Verde, Plant Food Wine, Casse Cou Chocolate, Plant Pub, Sutra, Arata, Pure Food and Wine, besina, and New Burger.

Multiple restaurants

I will edit this review at some point later to individually review each one in the text below, since these are multiple separate restaurants with different dining areas and menus, as well as a marketplace/grab and go, but they cannot be separated on HappyCow except for one (Besina), apparently because they have the same address/ownership and are all Matthew Kenney concepts. This makes it complicated to review them, but I wrote to HappyCow and haven’t heard back. The individual restaurants are New Burger, Besina, and Double Zero, and Make Out, and there is also 345 speakeasy lounge & mixology cocktail bar, coffee bar, and a marketplace with groceries, other items, and a grab-and-go. I have not even had the chance to eat at/experience all of them yet, unfortunately. However, Plant City in general is an amazing vegan wonderland and the food that I have had is all amazing. It is at the bottom of college hill, right next to the river walk and nearby footbridges to downtown Providence. Definitely recommend coming here even if not from the area. Stayed at a hotel across the footbridge from Plant City and it was perfect.

Double Zero: Italian food, amazing. Had the raw zucchini lasagna and the “Meatballs” for the table dish. Also had the eggplant parm previously at the Boston location of this restaurant (now closed I believe), best eggplant parm ever had.

Many options

It was great being able to go somewhere and get something from any of the places. I only got a latte from the coffee bar this time, would definitely go again. The brown sugar rosemary latte was not as brown sugar and rosemary as I thought it would be but still good. Baked goods were pretty good too, it was tempting to try all of them.

Many options!

Dinner at Double Zero was good, but not great. Portions were expensive but generous (no one was able to finish, so we took the leftovers home). The pasta dishes were better than the pizza, which was a bit disappointing, and everything was oversalted. Main courses didn’t arrive together, so some dishes cooled while we waited for everyone to be served. Still, I appreciate being able to order anything on the menu, and will return to try some of the other options.

Pros: All vegan options , Creative dishes , Large drink selection

Cons: Pleasant, but inconsistent service , Very salty food , Extremely loud

Vegan Heaven!

We make excuses to fly across the country to eat here! We have eaten at both restaurants upstairs(Bessina & Double Zero) as well as trying lots of pastries downstairs. Everything was great. I love the Double Zero artichoke dip- could eat it for a meal. The sausage calzone is very authentic. Nachos are excellent. Quesadillas are great. If you’re getting pastry try a pop tart. The ambience upstairs is lovely with a nice view. #Veganuary

Pros: Great food , Great atmosphere , All vegan all the time

Cons: Nonexistent
