Vegan friendly island! - Edit
We visit Northumberland several times a year so Pilgrims feels like one of our regular spots. This place has become increasingly vegan friendly over the last few years, which is so wonderful to see. There are always vegan, vegetarian, dairy free and gluten free sweet options. We wish they still offered savoury food. Over the years we’ve had aloo gobi wrap, moussaka panini, curried parsnip soup, cookies, almond croissants, ‘Cuthbert cake” (iced flapjack), scone pudding, hot chocolate, chocolate and marshmallow biscuits, all served by a lovely staff team who are so friendly. The courtyard is a beautiful setting with deckchairs and bird feeders. The coffee is great and can be bought as beans or ground to suit stovetop etc. at home, and is also available to order online. Brilliant spot to grab a hot drink from and then go seal spotting!

Organic coffee, tea and cake - Edit
A few vegan cakes (very nice Cuthberts Cake - fruity soft flapjack?) and a nice place to sit outside. All organic, which makes the 50p extra for oat milk coffee a bit much, especially with a vegan ice cream shop next door with shared business connection. Buy cake from there - that's vegan!

Shame they charge for oat milk - Edit
Had a really nice coffee here but they do charge 50p extra for oat milk, which I think is a bit old fashioned in this day and age. That said, the coffee was delicious (they also sell bags of beans) and the staff were nice. Not a lot of seating inside but plenty outside in a nice garden area. Given that it looks like they only use takeaway cups (no proper mugs etc) it would be nice if they also gave a discount for reusable mugs.

Nice to try it - Edit
Nice cafe with friendly staff, just a shame they have no savoury food and all seating was outside (I think it was being renovated). The first coffee we had was lovely but I’m not entirely sure the second had oat milk as I had a very sore tummy afterwards and it tasted a lot different 😒

Simple & tasty - Edit
Like most rural locations in the UK this corner if Northumbria is not exactly overflowing with vegan and / or veggie cafes and restaurants. However Pilgrim Coffee is a wee gem. They are a coffee roasters that has a coffee shop on the side so food is not the main offering. The menu is small and simple but it seems that there is always one savoury vegan option and a sweet offering (their overall offering of cakes is greater than their savoury offering). While we were there the vegan option was a butternut squash salad and the soup of the day (wild mushroon stew) also happened to be vegan. Both were excellent, and I say that as someone whose heart sinks at being offered salad as a main dish and who also thinks that all too often butternut squash doesn't live up to the promise. No such worries here - hearty, filling and very tasty.
Read moreWe also had their St. Cuthbert cake (a fruit & nut flapjack type thing) and a cup of their coffee. I've taken my coffee black way longer than I have been vegan but I did see that they offer plant milk if you fancy a flat white, etc.
It is entirely outdoors, with limited seating but does mean dogs are welcome. Service was friendly and efficient but queuing is inevitable. We were there in early November, I can only imagine it is a bit crazy in the height of summer.
I also noticed they sold other vegan products behind the counter, like Round Ups the vegan version of Wagon Wheels.
Pros: Vegan food clearly labelled, Hearty & tasty, Dogs welcome
Cons: Limited range

Excellent Coffee & Cake - Edit
Visited as I saw Pilgrims Coffee on Happycow and I am so glad I did. We sat in the lovely courtyard on a beautiful sunny day. We ordered coffee and vegan cake and both were top notch. There was also a vegan pasta salad and aloo gobi wrap available too. Loved the whole experience, a great place.

Good vegan options and eco friendly! - Edit
A hidden gem on Holy Island. I was surprised to find any vegan options on Holy Island, I was expecting chips and a side salad but I was pleasantly surprised at the options I had. I got the pasta salad which was full of flavour which had a spicy kick to it and my mum got the sagg aloo wrap which was really tasty and filling. They had a vegan sweet option, which looked nice but I didn’t try. Alternative milk options available and the staff are really knowledgeable on a vegan diet! The has a beautiful outdoor seating area and is really focussed on being eco friendly which is lovely to see.

No longer does vegan cheese, but has oatmilk - Edit
Sweet & sour tofu & veg toasted panini- but NO vegan cheese. When asked about vegan cheese was told they no longer used as changing menu. Was nice, but without the cheese everything fell out of panini. They had oatmilk for cappucino. Also had a veg soup & a homemade flapjack dessert but didnt try those. Was very busy & have to carry own tray of coffees out of narrow doorway that customers are lining up all the way out of trying not to spill.

Hidden gem - Edit
Really pleased we looked on HappyCow before coming to Holy Island. Thought we’d end up getting chips from somewhere but ended up with oat milk flat whites with the house coffee (which is amazing), Jamaican Tofu ciabatta paninis and raw cheesecake and flapjack. Great style with loads of plants and outdoor space! Great to have a well thought out vegan option in such an remote area!

Well hidden but delicious! - Edit
Such a nice spot to stumble upon in an area lacking vegan options, they have vegan soup, paninis, salad and cake as well as oat milk for drinks. When I went the options were a courgette soup with soya cream which may dad thoroughly enjoyed, I had the jackfruit panini with vegan cheese and slaw which was the best jackfruit I've tried, and they was a fruity flapjack which was super moist and flavoursome. They also had loads of interesting unique veggie and meat options and all clearly labelled and at a reasonable price. Wish I lived closer so I could go again!!

Long wait was not worth it - Edit
We've been here a number of times before but our most recent visit was really disappointing. We queued for ages to order our jackfruit paninis only for a member of staff to drop one on the floor - it was the last one and the only other vegan option was salad. The only vegan cake was flapjack and the coffees were served in plastic beakers. Service wasn't great either. Shame.

Nice lunch spot - Edit
Really nice little coffee and lunch place with a big garden. Was lovely in sunny weather. There were 2 vegan lunch option, 2 dessert options and oat milk. Unfortunately they had a brownie that was made with vegan ingredients but then had eggwash on the top. They also sold vegan sweets and cookies.

Stands out in an area lacking in vegan options - Edit
Across Northumberland, it seems there is little in the way of vegan-friendly options. So it was a nice change to come across the offerings that were clearly labelled at Pilgrims: we had a panini (which contained vegan cheese) and a granola slice, alongside hot drinks with plant milk. It's hardly an extensive or unique selection, but it's a really good start for the area as a whole. There was a pleasant outdoor area of picnic tables where dogs were welcome, so bonus points for that too.
