Underwhelming (and very small) vegan options

We were tempted by the menu online which seemed to have several unusual vegan options (eg cauliflower tacos in miso crema), although there was no standalone vegan menu, which should have been a bit of a red flag!

We ordered tortilla chips (totopos) with three salsas and received a tiny bowl with maybe 10 cold chips (they should have been hot if freshly fried). Salsa bowls were tiny. We ordered a second bowl of chips as we were starving, but they never arrived.

For our main course, we ordered the cauliflower tacos in miso crema with pickled carrot. These were battered, semi-cooked cauliflower nuggets that tasted more of cumin than miso. The soft tortillas they were served on were fine but very small. You’d need two portions each for main (at £8 a pop) to fill up.

There is no vegan cheese available to have one of the quesadillas, so we couldn’t try those.

For sides, we had the padron peppers, which were OK but quite oily and full of seeds. Make sure you order the vegan crème fraîche, as we didn’t specify and weren’t sure if what we received was dairy (despite mentioning in our booking we were vegan). The papas mexicanas were nuggets of deep-fried potato, which were OK but came with lots of large bits of hard burnt potato.

For dessert, the only vegan option was sorbet. We ordered a scoop each of coconut and fermented pineapple. They tasted homemade but unfortunately weren’t great either - they seemed not to have set properly.

Even our drinks (we had a pisco sour and a sonresa cocktail) tasted weird: pisco sours are usually tangy and citrussy, but this one was very smoky, like whiskey. The sonresa was very sweet.

Shame to leave such a negative review, but we had been really looking forward to our meal and didn’t really enjoy any of it. Lesson learned: go somewhere that doesn’t see vegan options as an afterthought!

Pros: Colourful décor

Cons: Underwhelming vegan options, Small portions, Expensive

Hi,

This is the owner of the restaurand and I just want to comment on the review;

Firstly, you talk about portion sizes & also mention that you ordered totopos for 'starter' and 1 portion of tacos for main. The restaurant is Mexican small plates & tapas style, which is stated on the menu, we reccomend 2/3 dishes per person plus snacks, again, stated on the menu.

Our totopos are served cold, always have been, always are by similar style restaurants, the entire dish is £3.50 with salsas, using freshly made corn tortillas, so I am unsure as to what you were expecting.

There is no miso in the cauliflower itself, there is cumin, the miso is in the crema, as stated on the menu. Our tacos are reasonable priced for the cost of ingredients and the cost of maintaining the restaurant, in line if not cheaper than most similar competitors (see menu prices at Pina, Madre & other similar restaurants).

I am unsure how we are expected to deseed the padron peppers? They are served with a salsa macha which is a guajillo OIL based salsa with peanuts.

We do not claim to be a vegan restaurant, we do not advertise as having a vegan menu. We get a lot of vegetarian and vegan customers and generally receive positive reviews. We are a small restaurant with a small team and a small kitchen, we offer a predominantely gluten free menu, however, due to the size of the place, we cannot cater extensively to every dietary requirement, we offer vegan options, plenty, in my opinion. The menu was available to see before booking, so to leave a negative review based on this is unfair, as it is never a claim that we made.

Again, with the drinks, you suggest that we are not using Pisco, which we are, our Pisco sour is not smoky in any way, I have tried ours and many others. The sonrisa is a cacao/orange/mezcal based cocktail, it is served short, fairly boozy and sweet, if it is not to your liking, fair enough, others really enjoy it, but to say it tastes 'weird' just lacks awareness that not everything is to your taste, but is to others.

I agree it is a shame to leave a review like this, especially since most of it is based purely on a lack of awareness towards our menu concept (small plates, as stated on the menu), your opinion and some assumption that we should have a menu that caters to everyone, which is simply not possible.
