Paperbark plates up Australia with panache - Edit
Gorgeous food and friendly team who provide great service. Paperbark is unique in that it's entirely vegan and dedicated to showcasing Australian native ingredients, which they do with panache. Their clever use of Australian flavours and textures will please all palates, not just vegans. Bring your overseas visitors here; bring your mixed bag of mates; bring your colleagues; bring your Mum. You won't be disappointed.

Perfect date night ✨ - Edit
Went here for my boyfriend’s 30th and we had the kitchen menu (ten courses at $85 each). Amazing experience. Every course was a surprise, particularly the paperbark mushrooms with finger lime and macadamia cream. It was a busy Saturday evening but the service was great and attentive.

Awesome vegan food and service - Edit
This was an awesome experience right from the moment we stepped into the restaurant. The staff were efficient, attentive and charming.
Read moreWe had a reservation at the front balcony but because it was a windy evening, the staff said they would try to find us a table inside if we liked. We sat at the bar for about 20 minutes until a table became available.
The wines we had with our meal are definitely worth exploring -- we tried the roses this time and we were very happy with their quality.
The food was inventive and unbelievably good. Vegans fed up with being relegated to dismissive vegan options or bland salads at non-vegan restaurants will delight at the creativity and nuanced seasonal flavors the chef explores in the 8 course "Kitchen Menu".
We had two minor complaints: the dressing on a salad had been over-salted; and the espresso at the end of the meal was distinctly sour.
Overall, we had a truly delightful experience which we would recommend without hesitation!
Pros: Highly creative dishes. Excellent service.
Cons: None.

Dainty - Edit
We came here for a special dinner. I had had reservations about making reservations (see what I did) because the degustation menu, while typically priced, wasn’t cheap at $75 and the dish descriptions sounded a bit dainty. However I took the plunge for a treat. The dishes were dainty, but I wasn’t left hungry at the end as I have been with some degustations. There were strong, subtle and complex flavours as you’d expect, although some of these flavours were a bit samey. The dishes were clever, with one or two very good ones, and with decorative botanical elements in keeping with the local themes. Service was excellent: attentive but not intrusive. A very nice experience, but not one that excited me as much as I’d have liked.

Quality degustation - Edit
We went to Paperbark in early July, 2018. Not long after it opened. To get there, just be sure to follow the directions on the website, and not go to the street address as it is the other end of a complex.
Read moreWe had the degustation menu, and it was very good and very filling. Each dish was an interesting morsel with an Australian twist - a real test of the taste buds. We enjoyed every bit of it.
Just a couple of issues, while our waitress was very friendly, when here shift ended she just packed up and set off to the back of the restaurant, a little explanation or handover would have been nice.
The other this was the heating. As it was a cold evening, I'd get cool and put my jumper on, they would then turn on the significant heater bars and I would get too warm, and the cycle continued.
These were relatively minor issues, the food was great and we'll be back.
Pros: Excellent and creative food, Friendly service
Cons: the hot/cold heating, service continuity

In two minds... - Edit
I'm really in two minds about Paperbark having eaten there last night. The greeting was friendly (although I wish they'd stick an "entrance" sign on the glass door as most customers seemed to have trouble finding the right way in !) and the wait staff happily moved me to a different table when the overhead heating got to be too hot (and a comfortable bench seat, as the on floor seating is tiny and hard).
Read moreFor starters I had the crusty bread and olive oil at a reasonable $4 though it would have gone down much better with a spoonful of dukkah (especially dukkah made from Australian native plants as that is Paperbark's theme). Main course was the mushrooms, pepperberry and gnocchi which was good but include something very stringy which stuck in my throat and stuck in my teeth (not a good look or feel). The first two dishes were very black and brown in colour and at that point, while enjoying the all Australian, all vegan wine list, I realised what bugged me - there is next to no atmosphere at Paperbark. The fittings are very plain and generic with generic potted plants and lighting that was so dim I really had trouble reading the wine list.
Dessert arrived and I enjoyed the roasted banana with chocolate and crushed peanut topped with vegan honeycomb. Although the honeycomb was extremely sweet. However it was all brown (again). Was it me or is everything they serve a shade of brown ?
Overall the meal was moderately priced but when you add a couple of glasses of wine (around $15-$18 per glass) and a tip then there's not much change from $100.
I should also mention that almost everyone else in the place was under 30 so there's some well-heeled youth in this part of Sydney !

Le Cool - Edit
This restaurant is an absolute gem. We went for Sunday brunch, and everything we ate and drank was exceptional. The chef uses fresh, quality produce to create his stunning, perfectly presented dishes. Everything comes with a twist. Often, a uniquely Australian twist. The service is relaxed and friendly and the ambience cooler than cool. Can’t wait to go back.
