Delish veggie options! - Edit
Recently dined at Pangea Tavern while on vacation in Avon, NC. I was so thankful to see multiple vegan friendly options on the menu for dinner. I enjoyed the curry with smoked tofu and it was incredible!! Already looking forward to our next visit!

Update 8/2023 - removing 2 stars. Ordered the thai coconut curry tonight with tofu. They changed the dish from last time I had it a season or two ago. No coconut curry flavor at all. The tofu came with a smokey flavor and completely overwhelmed the dish. I think whatever they used for the smokey flavor was mixed all into the sauce. Smelled so bad. I could not eat it. Unfortunately we ordered to go again so I couldn't let a server or someone know to send it back. Other non veg people in my group ordered seafood and were also sadly disappointed, especially compared to another restaurant that they loved and ordered from 3x times this week. They said the french fries were bad and cold. No ketchup. Did not eat them. Also did not like their grouper bites (had cheese on it and were fried?). I still want to try the fried green tomatoes, but aside from that, I don't think we will ever order from here again unless they improve their quality to how it used to be a few years ago. Way too expensive for decreasing quality. They don't even offer as many veg options as they did last year (no carrot cake, cabbage rolls, veggie paella, or empanadas). They seem to be heading in a different direction now.
Read moreOriginal 7/2023 - Happy that they have vegan options. The curry tofu was pretty good in the past. Ordered the vegan chorizo tacos to go recently. Good serving size, but for $20, I feel like it should come already assembled. Doesn't mention deconstructed on the menu. Tastes like Beyond Meat Chorizo. Could use a cashew or avocado crema in addition to the one sauce that came with it. I'm interested in trying the fried tomatoes next.

The most options on Hatteras island - Edit
Though it can be loud to dine there, it’s worth it. They have multiple options including a hand made vegan carrot cake for dessert! It was EXCELLENT!

We were a little worried coming out to Avon that we would have a hard time finding many vegan options, and we were so excited to come across this place!
Read moreEverything we tried was absolutely amazing, the staff is so friendly and just all-around great people, and even on a really crowded evening, our food came out really fast.
We had chorizo sopes with a cashew cream sauce that was just amazing! I wish I could have ordered a big bowl of that sauce to take home with us, but I don’t know if it would have held up for an 11 hour drive! They also have a build-your-own taco plate using most of those ingredients that is great for kids especially, because they can choose what to put in their tacos. The cabbage rolls (an appetizer, but big portions) were very good as well. The curry was also amazing, the sauce had just a tiny bit of spice to it, and such a good flavor. Both my kids (6 &😄absolutely loved the veggie paella with the smoked tofu. They can be picky eaters at times, so I was pleasantly surprised they enjoyed it so much.
We only stayed down here for two nights, and ate here for dinner both nights! Already looking forward to coming back next summer! 😊

Pangea Tavern vegan meals never disappoints. The only restaurant on the island that has fully vegan and plant based options. The staff is very accommodating. I will always come here when I visit! Highly recommend smoked tofu tacos and cabbage rolls.

Clearly marked vegan options! We had the stuffed portobello, Thai curry and paella. Everything was excellent and many local beers to choose from. Our server was attentive and friendly. Be sure to make reservations! Our omnivore friends had great seafood (if you're into that sort of thing)

Feel the love at this Vegan Friendly Restaurant!!! - Edit
This place is a gem. Being vegan has its limitations on many menus including in my hometown. Ambiance has often been the key reason for dining due to the lack luster selection in my experience. Praying for the chef to be flexible and accurate with an order is also part of the "thrill" of dining out.
Read moreThat being said, these worries shed away simply driving up to Pangea and being greeted by the pirate statue in the parking lot. There's a freaking pirate ship playground along with a castle in the back! So cool.
As appealing as the outside, my family and I were greeted by the owner who is extremely friendly and were led to the main room with sharks!
I guess this could be found at any other restaurant (not really), but then the menu selection of vegan and vegetarian options were spoiling.
Spoiling in the sense that there were many and a variety of world bistro options. It's not often one find vegan gourmet and even less likely in a pirate themed one. Half the staff is vegan as well. The service and suggestion were also available. Drinks were fantastic.
Everything from the attention to detail to the menu selection, restaurant theme, service, quality, assurance, gourmet quality food, and the location from one of the farthest reaches of The Outer Banks makes this place spectacular. Fellow vegans, DO NOT PASS THIS PLACE UP. It would be regrettable.

It's rare, but once in a while you find one of those restaurants you know you will go out of your way to visit any time you are close. This is one of those places. Unbelievable vegan thai coconut curry. The smoked tofu was a great touch that gave a slight smokiness to the dish. The curry was creamy, veggies cooked perfectly, and it was honestly one of the best (if not the best) curries I have ever had (rivaled only by a panang salmon curry in NOLA). But, even the incredible curry took a back seat to whatever that vegan custard dessert was that they served up! I didn't catch the name but already want to drive back for more. (5 stars despite Happy Cow limiting it to only 4 being possible as it is not fully vegan)
