True Hidden Gem in the Midwest

My husband and I chose Old Caledonian for our honeymoon after our October wedding, and we could not have been more impressed. It was the PERFECT getaway, for so many reasons:

- I have to start with FOOD. We dined in for 2 dinners, 3 breakfasts, and 3 tea-times. We had some of the best meals we have ever tasted. Chef Jon in rural Missouri is hands-down the best vegan chef we've ever encountered, and we've eaten at the best vegan restaurants in Chicago, Atlanta, etc. His dishes were innovative, hearty, perfectly seasoned, and beautifully plated. If we lived closer, we'd go all the time just to eat!!

- The lodgings. We stayed in the Heather room, which was stocked with tons of amenities (robes, slippers, ear plugs, shampoo, bath salts, even a bidet). Since the house is on the older side, we thought it might be noisy or creaky, but our room was fairly quiet/comfortable. The decorations are not modern but they feel cozy.

- The property. Beyond your room, there is so much to explore throughout the house and its yard. We enjoyed the hot tub, which was easy to use and so refreshing on a cool fall day. We spent time perusing books and board games in the library. We watched the fish swim in the koi pond from the lovely gazebo. The entire property just makes you feel at peace.

- The location. I will be honest... Caledonia is tiny. Population ~130. We figured we'd take a walk around town, but it only took 20 minutes to go up and down the main street. However, we did find lots of gems! We found some antiques and snacks at the General Store, and ate at a local cafe (FDC). The best aspect of the location, however, is the proximity to hiking! We explored both Elephant Rocks and Johnson's Shut-Ins, both of which were a short drive away. In October, rural Missouri was GORGEOUS with the bright fall leaves on every tree. For a city dweller, it will give you some much-needed fresh air.

- The hospitality. Jon and Penny are the best hosts. I was worried that a B&B (it was our first) would not feel "anonymous" enough for me, when compared to a hotel. On the contrary, it felt so warm and inviting to be welcomed into this B&B. There was only one other couple staying there, due to COVID-era capacity limits, but we felt like we had plenty of our own space. Jon was always around to refill our coffees, answer questions about the area, or tell fascinating stories about his life (Tip: ask about Antarctica). He was so accommodating and made us feel very special.

Overall, 10/10.

Pros: Incredible food, Great hospitality/amenities, Hot tub

Cons: Limited to 2 dinners per stay, Lack of vegan options in surrounding area

October 2020 Vacation

Pros: Jon is a great host who is accommodating to your needs. The food is superb. It's definitely has it's own original style that is proof that vegan food is more than mock meats and salads. You can appreciate the subtle science and exact art that is vegan food. Bathrobes, towels and slippers are provided. This is of the utmost importance because there is a sauna and hot tub on the grounds. Pro-tip: The barrel shape sequesters all the heat to upper middle of the sauna so you may need to stand up to get a sweat going. Old Caledonia also provides earplugs and a white noise machine in each room. See lodging below. I personally did not make use of these but the option is nice. You should not miss the library! If you're into cooking, Jon's library is great place to find either find Vegan recipes or find recipes that you can easily Veganize.

Cons: These are obviously nitpicks as I'd still rate the following 4/5 see graph. Lodging -The house definitely has that "old home" charm with decor and furniture. The furniture, flooring and stairs might creak. There's a raised threshold in all doorways so keep calm and don't stub your toes. The B&B is located on the main thoroughfare so you will hear larger vehicles driving through town. I found the sound of fridge in the Heather Room more of a nuisance. Locale - Depending on your willingness to travel (i.e. St Louis), you might rate the locale higher or lower. There's not any plant based options for eats in town. Thankfully Jon offers afternoon teas with a nice little spread and dinners are an optional but highly recommend extra. Outside of food, there's plenty of great opportunities for hiking and biking in the nearby parks.

Disclaimer: The overall score is not an average of the graph scores. Don't get hung up on the math. Don't @ me. Hey, you sass that hoopy Jon Emanuel? There's a frood who really knows where his towel is.

Excellence Incarnate

The food prepared by Chef Jon was absolutely to DIE for! I myself am not vegan, but I could easily adopt a vegan diet if every meal was prepared with such passion and elegance. The accomodations were warm and welcoming, the atmosphere tranquil and incomparable to anything I've ever seen. If ever you're in need of a quiet getaway for the weekend, this haven of happiness is the premier spot for a price that won't break the bank

Pros: Quiet atmosphere, Delicious food, Friendly caretakers

Cons: None whatsoever

Amazing!

I had heard that this place had gone vegan and was close to Elephant Rocks and Johnson’s Shut-Ins parks (a couple of our favorite places), so I booked a stay for my wife and I. Totally beyond our expectations! The food was great (my wife loved the vegan teatime, and the pancakes were fantastic), and the house is full of history and beautiful woodwork. Sitting out in the gazebo by the koi pond was a perfect way to end our day. The sheets were so nice we actually bought a set in the B&B’s gift shop. Jon and Penny are total pros, and the service was top-notch. We absolutely will be back!

Amazing vegan breakfast and teatime!

You must visit this great vegan b&b! They have thought of everything. Beautiful place on 4 acres, gazebo by the pond, a yoga and meditation area on the 3rd floor—I even attended a Sunday morning instructor led yoga class that was included in my stay. Our room was very pretty, the bed so comfortable and there’s aromatherapy and sound machines in the rooms. There is an excellent outdoor sauna and shower. The breakfast was so delicious-amazing really. The Mexican breakfast with the homemade tortillas and salsa verde was so good! And at check-in time they give you an afternoon teatime with tea or vegan wine or beer, and a beautiful tray with amazing vegan sammies and sweets, and scones of course. We’ll be back for sure!

Pros: Amazing vegan food , Friendly owners, Excellent service

Cons: Wish we could have stayed longer
