Good but limited options

I had the pesto pizza which was good! It comes with a hazelnut ricotta that was very creamy. The pizza was perfectly cooked, tangy, and flavorful. The only thing is that it is pretty salty — so be prepared for that. I wish there were more options, as I believe there is only one vegan pizza option.

service was terrible, pizza was mediocre

I visited Nonavo Pizza in Vancouver, Washington, on 8/24, and unfortunately, my experience was far from what I expected. While the pizza itself looked fantastic, my encounter with the owner/pizza maker completely soured the experience.

As a pizzaiolo myself, I was admiring their beautiful pizza oven which sits front and center of their open kitchen. I decided to take a couple photos with my phone to capture the moment, and out of nowhere, the owner--who apparently thinks he's some kind of East Coast mob boss--started doing this bizarre, over-the-top impersonation, loudly asking me in an obnoxious tone, "Whatcha doing?"

I replied, "Taking a picture of this beautiful pizza oven," which for some reason made him even more upset. What followed was a verbal beatdown that went on for several rounds. I found it comical at first, but as he progressed, he got louder and more obnoxious. His loud and abrasive demeanor made the whole situation uncomfortable, not really for me but more for the seated patrons who were enjoying their lunch. To make matters worse, his shouts were peppered with profanity.

In an attempt to deescalate the situation, I mentioned that I was a pizzaiolo myself and have my own woodfired brick oven, hoping we could share some camaraderie. This only seemed to piss him off even more, making the situation even more awkward and unnecessary.

To top it all off, he actually flipped me off--an incredibly unprofessional move--which I later realized was captured comically on camera. It would have been laughable if it wasn't so absurdly rude. Che cafone! Un vero stronzo! Despite his bad attitude, I didn't let it chase me away. I hobbled to the register and ordered three pies. For context, I was the man with the goatee, glasses, and walking canes with my wife and daughter who we were dropping off as a first year college student.

As for the pizza itself, it was mediocre at best. We tried the Margherita, Marinara, and Anchovy pizzas, and all of them were disappointing. The dough was undercooked, and it was clear the oven temperature was too cold. For a place that prides itself on wood-fired pizza, this was a big letdown.
The cheese they used wasn't even buffalo mozzarella, which is a basic expectation for italian wood fired pizza.

And by the way, that oven sits proud front and center in the pizza shop, practically begging to be admired. If they didn't want the attention, they should have tucked it behind the scenes.

Pros: beautiful oven, counter service if thats your thing, open kitchen

Cons: owner is a jerk , owner is rude, owner is a wannabe gangster

Vegetarian options

Had pretty decent vegetarian options and a lot of interesting toppings. The dough and sauce were really good.

To much salt and oil

I was super excited to try this place but I found the lemon oil to make the pizza overwhelmingly oily and the ricotta cheese and pesto wayyy to salty. I was only able to eat one piece and then got a stomach ache. I may give it another chance and try the marinara but next time I’m craving pizza I’m going to make the trip to Portland.

Nice spot, friendly staff

The menu doesn't have vegan options labeled, but the staff was able to answer which ones were vegan as offered (the pesto and the marinara) as well as the ones that could easily be made vegan by subbing their hazelnut ricotta for the dairy cheese. We did that with the mushroom pizza, which was very good. Also got the pesto. I thought that was a little strong on the lemon but still was good. One upside for a cold day is that they have the large woodfired oven in the middle of the restaurant, so it's very cozy and warm inside.

Good pizza but could use more vegan options

This place was on my radar ever since I read a piece on Eater Portland about restaurants in Vancouver worth getting out of Portland for (high bar, I know). I finally made the trip. The food was pretty good; the crust was solid, but there was only one vegan option on the menu. I do agree with the review below that they were too generous with the pesto that it became a little overpowering as I nommed on the pizza. I also learned from the very friendly staff that they do have another vegan pizza off the menu with wild mushrooms and the same hazelnut cheese. I'll be sure to ask for it next time!

Pretty Good Vegan Pizza

They only have 1 purely vegan pizza and it’s the Pesto Pizza. They have hazelnut spread which is really good, but I felt like the pizza had too much Pesto on it. If I went back I’d order the Pesto Pizza with “light on the Pesto”

Pros: Cool Location

Cons: Too much Pesto, Only 1 Vegan option

Excellent Vegan Pesto and Hazelnut Riccotta

When you walk in, it is a little difficult to distinguish what is vegan and what isn't, since you wouldn't expect a Ricotta and Pesto pizza to be automatically vegan, but it is! Their doughs are delicious, fired in a brick oven right in the center of the restaurant.

They also serve sandwiches some days of the week, where they also will carry a vegan option on the menu.

Pros: Vegan Pesto, Vegan Ricotta

Cons: Fewer options
