Quaint and calming cafe - Edit
This cafe was one of my favorite places to eat in Tokyo. My hubs and I found this place in the back of a small organic market. There were several locals in the cafe, which is one of our fav indications that we are about to eat at a good restaurant. There was an English menu, though we decided to try the daily lunch offering. There were potato croquettes, several sides, pickles, soup, and more! This was SO delicious and the included tea was also a great touch.

Hidden place with good food and nice interior - Edit
2-3 lunchsets plus sides and desserts. Yummy vegan food in reasonable price, English menu available and tastefully decorated interior. Service a bit slow and shy, but that’s a cultural thing I suppose.

Nice Café with good food - Edit
The café in the back of the Nezu no Ya shop is a nice place to spend a quiet time (when outside of rush hour)
Read moreThe today's menu we had was a real joy to see. Very nice Japanese traditional menu experience, yet completely vegan. A perfect example how local traditions and compassion for good food can be kept without the need for animal exploiting.
The staff was very friendly. She explained us the menu and the idea behind, how the replace a traditional fried fish with fried lotus root and a nori sheet to replace the skin. Cool, something to try at home on a Sunday :-)
The price is ok. The portion size is adequate to local standards (read too small for me).
I was a bit disappointed by the the extra options. My large portion rice (+100yen) seemed hardly more then my partner's and cafe+cake set(+350 yen) was good, but more the size of a food tasting sample.
All in all, I recommend this place very much and will go there again when I get the chance.

Food for the soul - Edit
Forget chicken soup, this is the real deal if you want food that fills your heart. We had mock meat chicken "kara-age" style, and organic lemon as garnish. The pickles on the side complemented the dish beautifully. The restaurant is small, seating about 16 people, but it brought me memories of traditional Japanese cuisine that mothers make, with miso soup and brown rice is the center peice of every meal. Each bite was a celebration of what food should and can be. When you're done with your meal, I recommend taking a stroll around the neighborhood. It's a quiet area that has a certain gracefulness to it.

Authentic, auspicious and amazing food. - Edit
Tucked neatly behind an organic produce shop, Nezu Noya vegan restaurant is a treasure.
Read moreWe had spent the morning in Ueno park (hence the photos) and made our way here on foot. The set lunch menus are inexpensive, abundant and nourishing. The seasonal veggie curry was delicate and the daily special were pumpkin croquettes, exceptionally tasty and crispy.

Cute and cozy - Edit
A cute restaurant with a nice and cozy atmosphere. We only stopped for dessert and coffee and tea, but the savory items on the neighboring tables looked really good too! The sesame kinako cake could have used a little more flavor for me, but my husband loved it. The tea and coffee were excellent!

Lovely atmosphere. Reasonably priced for a very generous serving. Very flavoursome traditional Japanese lunch. I particularly loved the seasoning on the brown rice. I would highly recommend getting a dessert as well. The staff were very nice too.

Great find - Edit
Small restaurant and organic food shop in a lively neighbourhood in Tokyo. The greens, the potato salad, the miso, the tofu... everything was beautifully cooked and flavoursome. One of the best meals in Japan.

Favourite place in Tokyo! - Edit
This place was just so good. In a quiet but interesting part of the city, it wasn't packed with tourists but there were plenty of locals. The lunch set was incredible: my first vegan tempura was so good as was the rest of the lunch set. The lady serving was so friendly and made us feel very welcome.

Cosy and tasty - Edit
This was a perfect place to experience a smaller town, cosy atmosphere with very friendly service and delicious, reasonably priced food. Easy to find from the Nezu metro stop and well located for exploring the Ueno Park, museums and Yanaka neighbourhood. One of my favourite places in Tokyo I have tried on this trip.

Delicious and very nice atmosphere - Edit
We tried the daily menu and share two different cakes with a friend. The food was very good, shojin ryori (buddhist cuisine) style, with large portions for about 1500 yens (+ 200 yens with the cake of the day). Tasty, healthy, and great to eat for the first time a vegan "unagi" (eel) made from lotus root and flour. The place was also very nice, and the area -- Nezu -- is great too. I recommend this place and am looking forward to try it again!

First experience of lunch set - Edit
Near Ueno park which has lots of interesting galleries and museums this little restaurant is cosy and cute. The concept of lunch set was unfamiliar to me (just arrived). For newbies most meals are ordered as a "set" which includes multiple small dishes eg miso, drink, veges, pickles etc. The lunch set here was very tasty and interesting.

Cute Place! - Edit
Very cute cafe with very kind staff. Like others have said, it's in the back of a health store. There is a little sign at the front of the store that says "Vegan restaurant in back." The meal was a complete and very traditional meal. There were pickled veggies, miso soup, a main dish, and another little dish of vegetables. I'm not sure if the main dish changes daily. The menu didn't say what the main dish would be, just what it would come with. We got vegetable tempura. It was very good and fried with oats! That was a nice surprise. However, it was VERY fried. Super oily. So while yummy, not the healthiest meal. The rest of the dishes were great and simple though, so it was a good balance.

Amazing cafe with authentic cuisine. Their pickled vegies were the best I've had. The tofu in broth with Nori on their lunch menu was by far our favourite. We were blown away with this little gem. Strongly recommend for anyone in Tokyo

This place is a little gem, it’s about 15mins walk from Ueno Station. If you use google map it will take you there, you have to walk into a grocery store and the restaurant is situated right at the end of the grocery store. Another way to get in is from the sideway street, I find it it easier to walk in from grocery store as it’s on the Main Street.

Double hitter - Edit
We found the "Nezu no ya" restaurant by luck. We were strolling the neighbourhood and stumbled upon this place. The restaurant is peaceful, beautiful and almost tranquil. It's open until 16.30, no dinner is served.
Read moreThe menu (Japanese and English) has only three options: the plate of the day, rice curry and rice balls ("onigiri"). We ordered the latter two and they were both fresh, tasty and healthy.
My only comment would be that the menu of Nezu no Ya isn't unique. While other vegan restaurants have their own unique style, this one has basic healthy vegan food but nothing that distinguishes it from other vegan places (perhaps except for the atmosphere).
However, one very pleasant thing is that Nezu no Ya is connected to a health food store! All the ingredients used in the restaurant can actually be bought at the shop around the corner. We bought fake meat, vegan mapo tofu, organic nuts and more. A double hitter!
Pros: connected to a health food store!, fair prices, good quality food
Cons: only serves lunch, no dinner, nothing unique

Satisfying clean eating - Edit
Reliable menu options & comfortable/cozy cafe atmosphere. The restaurant is one of the first veg establishments in Tokyo and the staff are committed to what they do. The lunch sets are wholesome and satisfying. I sometimes bring nonveg friends to enjoy a japanese-style veg meal and they've had no complaints! (but maybe because they are open minded people haha). They have take-out lunch boxes as well, if you want to enjoy a picnic at Nezu Shrine (close walk, gorgeous & spacious spot!) or Ueno Park :)

Nice atmosphere, good food, reasonable price! - Edit
Nezu no Ya is located near Nezu station. At the crossroad, find a fabric/kimono shop and look for the small street with vending machines. Going pass the restaurant with a flag you will see a very traditional looking place. It will read "Nezunoya" with a small "vegan restaurant".
Read moreWhen I arrive I was the only guest there so it was quiet and lovely. Although I was a bit late for lunch time the waitress still accommodated me (which was really nice of them).
I got the special daily lunch, which had pumpkin croquette for the main dish. The food was delicious! I love the rice so much and the croquette was crunchy on the outside yet soft on the inside. The many small side dishes add a variety of taste which made it so interesting. Not a big fan of the soup, just a personal taste thing.
Pros: Nice atmosphere, Good food which a variety of taste, made with care, Has English menu
Cons: Only one dessert option (but changes daily)

Nezunoya, Ueno, Tokyo 15/5/2017
Read moreOur first day in Tokyo and a very good find. Was easy to locate if one understands the address system in this city (District, Superblock, Block, Number so Nezu 1-1-14 is Nezu District, Superblock 1, Block 1, Number 14). The restaurant main entrance is 10m down a little side lane but the organic shop opens directly onto the main street (Shinobazu-dori) not far from the west side of Ueno Park. Food was good and consisted of sticky rice, pickles and nicely fried sweet potato balls with miso soup. Hosts were friendly and atmosphere was very calm.
Pros: Food good, Service good, Atmosphere pleasant
