Great store that's gotten better over the years - Edit
When I first moved to Truckee, New Moon was a tiny operation with a sad produce section. Well, those days are long gone. Several expansions later, this is an amazing small-town health food store.
Read moreGreat, 100% organic produce section, lots locally-sourced. A surprisingly comprehensive selection, not every last chile or variety you'd find at the grocery store, but 99% of common staples.
AMAZING bulk selection. Rice, nuts, flour, beans, grains, quinoa, spices, dried fruit, you name it. All without the waste of extra packaging. WAY bigger than the grocery store bulk sections which are mostly just nuts and chocolate, not food.
Decent selection of other products I need like sauces, tofu and such, but kind of limited by space. For a while they didn't have a hoisin sauce, now they have a weird coconut one. Big aisle of supplements and such which isn't my thing personally, but its there I guess.
Smoothie bar isn't really my thing either. The deli food and prepared dishes are not bad at all, but not as amazing as the Tahoe City location's Uncommon Kitchen (which has a few things in the cooler in Truckee, but it's never really well-stocked).
Always out of whole-grain/local bread. I wish they'd try to pick up additional suppliers there like Tahoe Bread Co or the folks the Food Hub stocks.
Big craft beer selection, lots of tall cans. Wine selection is not so much on-point for me, but they do have a nice Nigori Sake which I appreciate.
Pros: Great bulk section, Great produce, Most of your other cooking needs
Cons: Never any bread besides Truckee Sourdough in stock

Vegan groceries - Edit
Staying in Truckee this seems to be the best option for vegan groceries. They sell a lot of dairy and meats but have vegan cheeses, mylks, cookies, etc. You can definitely get enough supplies here to make meals.

Truckee Gem - Edit
This store was the best spot for vegan shopping in Truckee. So happy it exists! A tiny spot near Safeway with everything we needed - picture Whole Foods meets local co-op. Great salad bar, including vegan tuna, and two delicious vegan soups. The deli has two vegan sandwiches on the menu, as well. The juice bar has lots of yummy organic options. The to-go options in the deli fridges were plentiful and tasty. Everything was reasonably priced and helped us stay stocked-up for our trip!

Cons: Small space gets crowded easily.

Four of us shopped here on our way back from camping at Lake Tahoe. Great organic produce, local produce, great selection of bulk foods, organic packaged foods, lots of ready made vegan & gluten free foods. Decent prices as they do have lots of things on sale. Recommended!
