"Healthy Malaysian food ... is there such a thing?" asked a 2008 article on one of Malaysia's most popular news sites. It should come as no surprise that the cuisine of Malaysia, the world's second largest producer of palm oil, can be a cardiac nightmare. But fortunately, as with other places where heart diseases are the top cause of death, in Malaysia interest in healthy eating is growing strongly. This eatery shows that healthy Malaysian food exists - and can be as tasty as ever.
The menu offers over a dozen set meals, including photos with English descriptions, along with a notice that there's no MSG. There's also an extensive ala carte menu with few photos or English, but the staff was friendly and always ready to help me make the right choices in my quest for the ultimate delight. For weeks, the cordial atmosphere of this family-owned eatery lured me to regularly return to try new dishes (despite the rather remote location), yet I was never disappointed. Laksa, satay, nasi lemak - all the favorites were just as promised: light, not oily or heavily salted, beautifully presented, and wonderfully tasty. My hosts also took me to the next level, introducing me to Sibu's Foochow specialties - kompia (like a mini-bagel) and vegetarian kampua noodles (which are typically made with lard) - along with Borneo's nutritious native vegetables, like "mani cai" (beware: raw juice can be fatally toxic).
All in all, it turned out to be not only a heavenly eating experience, but an outstanding travel highlight.
