Great vegan menu - Edit
The food is very good. You have to ask for the vegan menu but a good selection of food is available on it. So nice to see a specific vegan menu.

DELICIOUS and unique Indian food - Edit
Lemme start with the important bit:
Read moreGET HERE.
Context:
On holiday from the U.S. and craving flavor, my partner and I found Mumbaiwala on HappyCow and headed over. They have a whole separate, COMPLETE menu for us vegans; no 'can be made vegan' on two dishes nonsense.
The interior is bold and engaging, with a very industrial India vibe; scarlet, burgundy, khaki, intentionally distressed steel, mahogany and teak and bronze.
We were seated quickly, and after ordering, food was fast. The food is authentically Indian, with rich, delicious, powerful flavors. On top of that, they have some amazing dishes that you won't find anywhere else (a chaat with a green apple pickle and kūmara, for one), and the drinks are likewise unique and DELICIOUS (both the alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails)!
The dinner rush had just started and the staff was soon going flat out, so at one point we ended up with 3 people all helping us (which was great but a bit confusing for a moment), but overall the service was friendly, fast, and accurate. That's a winning combo. They even confirmed a dietary requirement, unprompted.
We got the kadai veg, Shakarkandi chaat, veg makhani, and two virgin drinks: Bombay colada and leechee and pomegranate soda. Literally everything was STUPID-good.
For the spice-wary, it's not too hot (but if you like to turn up the fire, I'm sure they can). I love spicy food, but I can't easily take true Indian or Thai hot-hot, and this was perfect as-is.
There are more things we want to try and we may go back, even with limited time in Christchurch. I would give this place 5 stars if I could!
Pros: Selection, Menu clarity, Flavor

Sensational food and service! - Edit
We were super hungry and overwhelmed with making a decision about dinner. I stumbled across this place and am so grateful to have found it!
Read moreWith plenty of vegetarian options on the main menu, they also had a separate vegan menu (on request).
We shared the vegetable makhani (which came with rice), garlic naan and roti with no butter. The naan and roti were a little different than what we are used to, they were a tad on the small side, but were still incredible. The curry was so smooth and the veges were super fresh. The curry serving was larger than the typical Indian curry serving so we added another bowl of rice ($4NZD).
We are coming back to Christchurch at the end of our trip and will 100% be visiting Mumbaiwala again.

Manchurian to die for - Edit
As other reviews have stated, the portions here aren’t huge, but the food is very very good. There are multiple vegan options and the Manchurian in particular is amazing. Some dishes are spicy, so if you can’t handle spice this might not be the place for you.

Decent food - Edit
The lovely atmosphere and service were the first things to strike me when I walked into this place. Was an enjoyable meal too however the only vegan dish could’ve been more exciting than just vegetables in sauce - I wish they had more vegan things on the menu, and vegan naan! Portion size was perfect. Had a df roti which was pretty good. Great place to go with friends to catch up.

Wonderful 'street food' menu... - Edit
We were here for a celebration dinner and it was a great dining experience. Our group was a Vegan, a Coeliac and 2 vegetarians. All of us were easily catered for with our meals.
Read moreWhile Indian food can be fairly standard offerings in a lot of western countries, this restaurant sets itself apart by specializing in street food dishes. We chose all of our dishes off this menu and they were all great.
We had the Chana Dal Chaat, the Moong & Urad Dal Vada and the Veg Manchurian. These were all delicious. The Veg Manchurian was a stand-out....very tasty! Also tandoori roti bread that was made dairy-free, no problem.
The 'streets' menu dishes do not come with rice (get some as a side order), and are smaller than a regular main but were a great size to share and a good way to sample a variety of different flavors.
When you eat Indian food semi-regularly, it's enjoyable trying something new and completely different from this part of the world, for a change.
The restaurant is vibrant and lively and the decor is clean, trendy and well designed. Even the 'train-carriage' themed bathrooms were great attention to detail with piped train sounds coming through the speakers.
Serving staff were knowledgeable and efficient. Prices were moderate and we thought it was great value.
Pros: Good vegan options., Great service. Clean restaurant., Moderate pricing
Cons: No vegan desserts offered
