Serves meat, vegan options available. African/Caribbean restaurant where all the sides are vegan. Rare for the area, as of Nov '21. The owner has adapted the recipes that traditionally use meat stock for flavor (like collared greens) to use herbs and spices instead. Reported that vegan items are gluten free; ask staff to verify. Open Mon-Wed 12:00pm-7:00pm, Fri 12:00pm-7:00pm, Sat 2:00pm-8:00pm, Sun 12:00pm-6:00pm.

Great food, friendly service - Edit
Very glad to have found this restaurant. The food was flavorful and the menu had plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. The owner clearly cared about making the African dishes work for vegetarians. We got to try selections we had never encountered before. And the owner was a lovely host as well.

Dinner and a show - Edit
There are a number of vegan entrees to choose from. Many, if not all the sides (and there are a lot of choices) are also vegan. I had the OYSTER MUSHROOM entree with Garri. This was flavorful and the garri made from a root vegetable had a texture similar to grits. Hubby had an entree with a side of red beans and rice which was also tasty.

I look forward to returning soon!

We tried several dishes and everything was amazing. Not many restaurants in the area have the wide selection of vegan options that Motherland Kitchen has. The owner is so friendly and happy to make recommendations. Will be going back often!

Vegan African and Caribbean - Edit
Motherland Kitchen & Spices for the win today. Incredible flavors. Chef Sabina was so welcoming. It felt like we were dining at her house as she explained the dishes to us and how it is traditionally eaten.
Read moreThe vegan dishes were full of depth and flavor. I had never eaten fufu before this. We began with the veggie pattie and fried plantains. What a great start to the meal. Then, we had the oyster mushroom peanut butter stew with garri fufu and the spinach collard pumpkinseed stew with foino fufu. As plant based eaters we learned so much about fonio as an African grain loaded with fiber and protein. She's the only one who has made this into fufu.
Check out the restaurant. You won't be disappointed. Can't wait to go back for more!
*Would give a 5 but app only allows a 4 unless they're fully vegan/vegetarian.*

Comforting and Tasty! - Edit
Picked up an order of jollof rice and moi moi as well as red beans and rice with cabbage tonight. This was my first time trying Motherland and I am thoroughly pleased with the experience! I opted for takeout so i cannot comment on the table service but the meals were filling and delicious. If you’re looking for authentic african cuisine, look no further! I am happy to have another local vegan option that i can feel good in supporting and will definitely be back again :)

Go! Unique and tasty African food - Edit
I live in Montgomery Village about 40 minutes drive away, but went up to Frederick with my wife on a Monday. She found Motherland Kitchen on Yelp. Was glad to see that while this restaurant wasn’t vegan, it had a vegan menu with multiple items and everything labeled. So we decided to try it!
Read moreWe ordered jollof rice, plantains, and the mushroom peanut stew with fonio fufu. Also a side of hot sauce that added that perfect extra zap. The mushroom peanut stew was so delicious we were sad when we ate it all and there was no more left to eat! Everything was SO good that after eating, we ordered another round of things we hadn’t tried, to eat at home.
The owner is amazing. She’s following her dream and passion after many years working in an IT job. She taught us about fonio, her work in making vegetables delicious, and her passions for making delicious vegan African food and sharing that by running this restaurant. She is friendly and inspiring.
We’re planning to return to Frederick just so we can eat there again soon. The food is unique for this area and deliciously satisfying, cooked with talent and care. Highly recommended!

Vegan African food. A true blessing and my new favorite place. - Edit
I saw Motherland Kitchen on Google and thought, there is no way this place is real. I love love love West African food and have spent so much time making it myself to have it vegan, but when I saw this place that is so close to me (right outside of Frederick) I was shocked. I ordered the Spinach-Collards Pumpkinseed Stew with Cassava Fufu, and I was amazed. The flavor is incredible and the dish felt warm and nourishing to both the body and soul. I have since been back for the Oyster Mushroom Peanut Butter Stew, and once again, so satisfied. In addition to the delicious meal, the owner is so incredibly kind and thoughtful. She provides the personal, relationship-based service that is missing from this day and age. Thank you Motherland Kitchen!!!

Lots of vegan delicious choices! - Edit
The vegan options are under sides on the menu, but the sides are huge! Main entree sizes for sure. I got the new (not yet on printed menu) oyster mushroom peanut stew with fufu and it was finger licking worthy! The peanut sauce was lushious and the mushrooms/veggies perfectly cooked. I’ve never had fufu and it was so much fun to try. My husband got the koki corn and it was so sweet and just how corn should taste, he liked it more than his non vegan main, so that’s a vegan win for me! We will definitely be going back to try more like the jollied rice and such. We also met the owner and she was super nice and when I asked for a vegan recommendation said, “ I got you” which made me super excited as most restaurants have such poor vegan vibes, but her vibes were awesome and accepting. I would give 5 stars but I cannot as the restaurant is not entirely vegan.

Amazing quality! - Edit
The food is delicious and the quality is incredible. Lots of excellent vegan and vegetarian options. The owner clearly has a lot of respect for vegans/vegan cuisine. Ate here in-person, then ordered their food on UberEATS as well, and the delivered meal was just as warm, fresh and tasty as the in-person meal (never happens with other restaurants!). Would highly recommend!

Authentic feel Vegan-friendly Caribbean-African food - Edit
So, you think about the Caribbean, and you think, fish, right? Yeah... but there's also rice with coconut milk... and, here it's the Jollof Rice, and it is so darned good. I could order a gallon and take it home, and then I'd eat it very happily for the entire week.
Read moreAll the sides are vegan, and you can make your own plate/ platter by choosing 2 or choosing 3. I opted for 3 amazing options, and I felt like I was back in the Caribbean. The 3-greens dish reminds me of callaloo. They also have fried plantains and veggie patties - very Caribbean. The cabbage presence is nice, along with lots of green and proteins, for those veg eaters like ourselves. The one down side is that the food is a little saltier than I would make it, but it makes the rice even more important. Together, it all balances out!
I will be back to eat more of these amazing veggie side dishes on a platter that is way too much food for one sitting!
Pros: Vegan options galore, Lots of food
Cons: A little too salty, Not 100% veg, Wait time

Homemade and Ethnic Food with Nice Options - Edit
Overall we loved this place. We liked some of the options better than others, the red beans and rice were really good and the pumpkin spinach stew was nice. We bought it with a side of yuca fufu which was a new cultural type of food for us that was interesting. The reception from the owner when we came in was one of the warmest and nicest we've had in our life and I felt very welcomed as a vegan, when sometimes I can be a little shy about asking for options. They're also clearly marked and nearly a full page of various sides to choose from, so the variety was appreciated in a city without tons of options. Would love to come back and wish this place a lot of success.

My partner and I tried this place for the first time today, and we will definitely be going back. (Would've given 5 stars, but Happy Cow rules don't allow for only partially vegan restaraunts.) We tried the cassava and yam fufu, red beans and rice, jollof rice, eggplant stew, and fried plantains. Literally everything was so tasty with big portions. Ice never had fufu before and it was AWESOME with the eggplant stew. Fried plantains were a very close second.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ALL DAY! - Edit
I’m a vegan and gluten-free African food lover and all I have is a hallelujah! 🙏🏼🙌🏼🥳
Read moreThis is better than the vegan food I had in west Africa, and it stands to reason knowing the owner and chef, Sabina, has been a vegan herself for over a year, and has poured her heart and soul into making the best vegan dishes possible.
If you’re a local vegan, you are so blessed. I live in Southern California and not even LA has anything like this. The price is reasonable and value is tremendous. The ingredients are simple and whole, and the preparation is outstanding. Everything is bursting with flavor. The fufu and banku, which are used to eat the dishes by hand, have a perfect consistency which is not too dry and not too sticky.
If you’ve never tried west African cuisine, and you like Ethiopian food, this is a must-try! A vegan foodie’s dream come true!
Pros: 24 vegan options!, Everything made fresh with love 💕 , Low cost and excellent value
Cons: Hard to order, to many good options! 🤔😋, Located in MD (I live in SoCal) , Closes early (7pm)

The food was perfect - Edit
I knew I was going to enjoy eating here as soon as I walked in because it smelled amazing. I went with my kids and we were the only ones there and got to spend some time talking with the owner who is absolutely wonderful. I ordered the eggplant stew and cassava fufu. The flavors were incredible and the portions were very generous. It took awhile to get all our food so I don’t recommend coming here if you’re already hangry but I assure you, it is well worth the wait.

Friendly but Disappointed - Edit
I was very much looking forward to visiting as they have all vegan sides and was looking forward to their food. Let me start by saying that I have eaten at several African and caribbean restaurants. I have also cooked a lot of African and caribbean dishes. I understand the time it takes to make these dishes and it is not possible for everything to be fresh. I worked at a restaurant for 10 years that also made food from scratch - things need to be reheated. However, all our food was microwaved. Not only could we hear it, but when the food arrived to our table the eggplant stew had cold spots you get from microwaving. The food was also under salted (I don't like salty but this had 0 salt and so lacked the punch of flavor). Also, none of the sides we tried had any spice/heat. How does Jollof Rice not have any heat?!
Read moreI will say that I feel like a few things could have made things worse - 1) the location is terrible and they probably don't get a lot of visitors. The chef told us herself that most people don't come that way. 2) She was leaving for the airport.
I truly would love to give them another try and I HATE giving negative reviews (why I gave 2 stars instead of 1); however, I am THAT disappointed.
The staff was very friendly and kind but it does not make up for the food experience.
Pros: All sides are vegan, Very friendly staff/owner
Cons: Food reheated by microwave, Drastically under-salted, No heat/spice to dishes that should be
MotherlandKitchen
Thank you for your feedback. We try not to make our food too spicy because not everyone can stand the heat. We are sorry you did not enjoy the food.
