I used to frequent Mother Earth’s down in Poughkeepsie and freaked out when I found there was one in Kingston too! The store itself has a ton of weird hard to find vegan food but it’s definitely on the pricier side. Great if you’re looking for an obscure item.
Still, the cafe is the main reason I go. They have prepackaged food which is great if you don’t have time to make lunch before work. They also will prepare things fresh and provide seating. The veggie burger and caesar salad are both big and tasty. Great lunch spot for sure!
The one down in Poughkeepsie has fresh made vegan apple cider donuts, scones, biscotti, and more though. Until they start making them at the Kingston location, this one remains 4 stars.
First let’s talk about why I didn’t give them 5 stars. It’s the prices. I know, I get it, it’s a smallish store that doesn’t sell large quantities of items BUT, they are so overpriced it borders on price gauging. They really have a great inventory if money is no object and the produce is reasonable. The bulk food section is huge and a great option to buy smaller quantities and save some expense this way. The Cafe though... what a lifesaver in Kingston which is nothing but failing chains that sell the worst food. The salad bar is wonderful with lots of options, there are 2 soups a day with one and sometimes both vegan, they make all kinds of sandwiches and there are lots of delicious choices in the deli counter. The falafels are the best around. There is also a hot bar during the week with 2-3 vegan options and 1 non vegan.
3/20/19-sad to report there is an allegation of an anti-Semitic incident when an employee shut the light & door on another employee in a walk-in cooler and said that now she knows what it would be like to be in a gas chamber and called her a “f’in jew”. Now this is bad enough on its own but reports that management did nothing until social media got hold of this and in fact told the victim to keep quiet or be fired. I personally will not shop there. Sunflower in Woodstock is a much better store anyway and about to add a cafe in the addition almost finished.
The organic produce section is very large, all reasonably priced, and the quality is gorgeous. The store is located in a large shopping plaza so the free parking is MASSIVE. Prices are higher than in our local health food store but this store has a huge inventory and variety of organic products. Seriously excellent chef in the kitchen!?Great expanded cafe for vegans and meat eaters. Excellent organic juice and smoothie bar. Also a pizza bar, full bakery, and sandwich counter. Lots of seating now.
I remember when this store was one-quarter the size. There were some prepared foods then, but nothing compared to what I had today. I ate a sausage & pepper quesadilla, potato, macaroni & curried chikn salads, and a chocolate chip sandwich cookie—all vegan, all delicious. There's so much more I wanted to try; I'll have to wait for my next visit!
This very large store has a great, fresh selection of most items you can think of and you can eat at the buffet/deli in the back of the store. The deli has vegetarian and vegan dishes made fresh daily. A great place to take the family for a quick, healthy bite.
This place has a big selection and lots of organic produce options. I was impressed that they carry many hard to find vegan cheeses such as Miyoko's, Cheezhound, Treeline, as well as the Daiya, Chao, and Follow Your Heart offerings. Really comprehensive bulk section, including the best spice section i've ever seen. They also have many vegan prepared foods in the deli/cafe section.
Large, well lit and clean. Large, newly expanded produce section has a wide selection of fresh veggies and fruit. Bulk foods sections feature many different items. Normal health food store canned, packaged and jarred foods, sells packaged meats, too. Natural cosmetics, soaps and shampoos, herbal remedies area is spacious, with staff available for help or questions. In store prepared foods area with salad bar for take out or dining in (serves meat, too). Rewards program, Senior discount.
All-in-all, an excellent community resource for healthy and vegetarian food.
