Sold short by its basic name - Edit
This place is indeed a vegan souvlaki bar at lunchtime, which is a wonderful thing. However I think the basic name belies the fact that, by night, it serves high-quality modern Greek- and Euro-style cuisine. Both of these facets are fabulous, but the latter is my reason for going. A friend had recommended the (Beef) Wellington and so I made a point of ordering this, which the owner also told me was the signature dish. Along with this we tried the c*****n tenders and, the calamari and the spanakopita. I started off with a very nice Cosmo, presented beautifully. The ambiance, while pleasant, is lit with pink neon, imparting a pink aura to any food photography. Our ordered dishes came out staggered in a thoughtful and timely way. The Wellington was all it was cracked up to be, with a strong flavour from the herbs. The peppercorn sauce - if that’s what the milky liquid on the side was - was a little watery though. The spanakopita was huge and intensely flavoured with a pleasant sourness, with the flaky and creamy textures combining nicely. I’m sad the Melbourne version of ISB Souv didn’t take off but hope they might try again in the near future.

I was always frustrated that we were often the only customers at I should be souvlaki in Melbourne. It definitely needed more support.

Best vegan souvlaki I've ever had! - Edit
My husband ordered the marinated olives and we shared the southern friend tenders. The flavour of the tenders was delicious and the crunchy consistency made them even better! We had the souvlaki plate and beef Wellington and both were insanely good. We'll definitely be visiting again next time we're in Newtown!!

souvlaki at the source - Edit
We ordered a LOT of seitan from them delivered during Melbourne lockdowns so it was nice to visit I Should Be Souvlaki at home and have our meal prepared for us.
Read moreFrom the lunch menu, I ordered the snack pack while my partner ordered the healthier souvlaki bowl. The chips were amazing! Cooked crisp and perfectly seasoned. You can choose 2 proteins in the snack pack and I chose chicken and 'ultimate' lamb. I actually prefer the 'original' lamb, although it's less 'realistic' but I don't think they make it anymore. Anyway, it was a huge serve, loaded with garlicky tzatziki, smoky chipotle mayo, and scattering of fresh parsley. I added feta and it was outstanding - salty and sharp with the perfectly crumbly texture. Whoever said it tasted like Bio Cheese, it definitely doesn't anymore! My partner loved the bowl for the fresh, fluffy pita and refreshing salad.
Just one disappointment I have to share; I was very excited to see Greek frappe on the menu and didn't think twice before ordering it, but I wouldn't again. I was expecting the Nescafe frappe style served all over Greece, which is STRONG, sweet, and refreshing but theirs was very weak and milky. One star off for that, sorry!

Love this place! We had one day last over in Sydney and made this our main stop - totally worth it! Will definitely come again! We had their souvlaki plate and a milkshake. Just disappointed that we didn't leave space for dessert ❤️

The redesign brings fine dining to souvlaki - Edit
I Should Be Souvlaki did a menu and establishment redesign in 2023/4 and is now more of a fine dining experience in the evenings. Their signature souvlaki is only for lunch or dinner takeaway now. Their new dinner dining menu is pricier than souvlakis but caters to different tastes. If you aren’t dining on a budget and want to experience some wonderful seitan (I recommend the chicken over the lamb personally) or want to experience some rare flavors as a vegan (the cesaer salad), check out this place one evening!

Hi there - thank you so much for your very kind 4-star review and detailed feedback. We understand your disappointment at the signature souvlaki not being included in our dinner menu but please know that this item is available for lunch 5-days per week, as well as for take away and Uber Eats at all times. We have spent months crafting an incredible dinner menu which is much more fitting for a great customer experience in the evenings, and wraps just don't have a place on that menu, so while they won't ever be on our dinner menu dine in (as they are a lunch item), you can get this item in multiple ways take away and also during lunch. We would love to have you in (on us) to try items from our new dinner menu so you can have the entire experience. If you would like to take us up on this, please reach out via email on hello@ishouldbe-souvlaki.com x

A must-try in Newtown - Edit
I Should be Souvlaki has the most delicious souvlaki I have ever tried! They were always a favourite of mine at the Sydney Vegan Markets and now that they’ve opened up a store in Newtown they’re going from strength to strength. They also provided catering for our engagement party which was incredibly well-received by all the vegans and non-vegans in attendance. Such mouthwatering comfort food!

The food was really really good and even my non vegan housemate loved it so much and told us how he couldn’t tell the difference between the food at this restaurant and the non vegan stuff he eats at home. The staff was also so amazing! They were always checking if we needed anything and we were also so amazed that they were willing to stay longer for us to finish our meals.

The best cheesecake - Edit
I had the souvlaki with lamb to start with. The pita bread was incredible and the lamb pretty realistic. The garlic sauce was a little lacking in my opinion. I had the blueberry cheesecake for dessert and it was absolutely delicious. Will have to return to try other meal items and cheesecake flavours!

I want to eat that calamari every night! - Edit
First time trying the new dinner menu and really enjoyed it! The Kofta are delicious so juicy and flavoursome and the salt & pepper calamari, well, I just want more, now! We also had the souvlaki plate (reliably good) and dreamy biscoff cheesecake. Cocktails and wine were very good too. Love this place!

Tasty food in a cute space - Edit
Generous portion sizes, and a nice variety of dishes. It was fun to try the calamari made from konjac, although not sure I'd order it again. The souvlaki was large and filled with fresh salad (plus numerous options for faux meats). I'm glad I tried it, but probably not somewhere I would bring a non-veg person given the menu focused on fake meat dishes. I didn't get to try the cheesecake sadly but would love to go back another time for that!

Great Place for Greek Vegan Food - Edit
I Should Be Souvlaki is a great place for vegans and non vegans to experience flavourful Greek dishes. The popcorn cauliflower was a savoury hit. Their pita bread is on point and the snack pack is enough to keep you filled. I should’ve tried the cheesecake due to plenty of good reviews. The raspberry almondine tart was decent - a tad sweet. Their pine-lime pina colada mocktail was a delight.

Enjoyed it - Edit
Came here based off of a recommendation from a fellow Happycow’er. I wasn’t sure on what to get so I asked the waitress who suggested the signature souvlaki. I ordered that with chicken and lamb. I thought it tasted great and was nicely sized. I also asked for Greek chips but there was some type of confusion and I received regular chips. No biggie. All in all, I find this place worth a visit. #Veganuary

Thank you so much for your stars and feedback, we really appreciate it! I'm so sorry there was confusion regarding your order - looking at the size of your chips, that may be where the confusion might be coming from as we do not do greek chips in the handful size, only in the regular serve. Hope to see you again sometime soon! x

It was ok - Edit
Extra star given for being fully vegan, for the novelty value, great service, and location. Also, we loved how you can sample the 'meats' before ordering which tasted really good and the service was friendly, helpful and fast.
Read moreBut sadly the flavours of the vegan meats were lost inside the Souvlaki which ended up tasting a bit bland. It's a bit pricey for what it is especially when you pay extra for the add ons ie chilli sauce.
There were no cheesecakes to try, apparently they are great.
