Serves meat, vegan options available. Food counter with a few seats outside. Has tofu as protein option in wrap, but does not guaranteed to have pure vegan food. Reported closed May 2024.
Wir haben uns einem Salat geteilt, da er riesig war. Super lecker, geht schnell, Dressing ist klasse. Aufwändigere Gerichte brauchen ca 25 Minuten, allerdings lohnt sich das Warten!
Super slow to take your order, and not very knowledgeable about what is and isn't vegan. We had to ask several times to ensure that the burrito and satay wrap we ordered were vegan and that the noodle dish our mom ordered didn't have peanuts in it. Food took a long time to come out. It was okay, nothing to write home about. The wrap and the burrito were not picture worthy. They were barely rolled and bith totally fell apart. Also, dumb expensive for simple food.
Delicious! I got the black bean burrito with tofu. Hold the cheese and aloha sauce add salsa. Super good but very expensive for “fast food”. My one burrito was 18.00
We got the coconut curry plate and the peanut satay and they were both fantastic. They said that they were both free of fish sauce, egg and dairy. The portions were huge!
If you want a veggie-full dish, do Mermaid's coconut curry. When eating on the island, many places feel like they are just trying to pass off some carrots as a gourmet veg dish and charge you $25 for them. Here they cook up a true assortment of locally grown veggies, and will spice it up or down for you. Great value. Service is a little inconsistent, but hey, island time.
I've been told at Mermaids that all dishes can be made vegan, just ask...? I'm seeing different stories here in the reviews, however (that they cannot guarantee vegan? Which is not what I've been told). If someone says to my face that there's no dairy, egg, fish sauce, and no flesh; then, at a certain point, especially on vacation, I just go with it....
PS -- Probably no vegan food on Kauai is going to wow you (gosh, especially if you're from NY, LA, SF), unless you go to a farmer's market to pick up the goods and cook them yourself.
Most meals have a Tofu, beef or chicken options which gives quite a few options for vegans.
We had the curry and stir fry - great, simple and huge portions.
Very relaxed owner meaning you will wait for your food a while - but overall worth it!
Went here for dinner one night as it was close to our hotel. Lots of vegan options, or items on the menu that can be veganized, and portions are good for what you pay. I had the coconut curry plate, and it wasn't the best meal I had on the island, but it was quick and convenient. My mom's tacos looked really good, but she found them spicy. Limited seating is at a counter or tables outside. I had some sort of hibiscus iced tea to drink, and it was really good! And nice that it's open for dinner (never got to try Rainbow Foods because they only do lunch).
We really liked our dishes that we had at Mermaid's Cafe, a peanut satay and coconut curry dish, both with tofu. Also had the Thai iced tea made with coconut milk. The portions were really big and the food was delicious, I'd recommend going for sure.
On the east side in Kapa'a, there is a small lunch and dinner spot called Mermaid's Cafe. They have a really vegan-friendly menu and it's cheap. They serve a tofu satay plate, tofu curry plate, tofu stir fry noodle plate, tofu satay wrap, organic salad, and a black bean burrito (no cheese). Basically, the whole menu can be made vegan.

We were very disappointed in the lack of vegan food at this cafe, even though they advertise that they have a few vegan dishes. The cooks told us that none of the dishes were vegan. This was our second trip to Kauai, and both times Mermaids did not have one vegan dish available.

Pros: fresh veggies cooked for you, options to choose from
Cons: inconsistent service, seating area could use a deep clean

pesto tofu - Edit
The pesto wrap with tofu is really good. We were told that the pesto is vegan. Be prepared for a garlic explosion!
