Has a few vegan choices on the menu, including a vegan shawarma and the white bean dip with pita; plus soups, nachos, and dips can be made vegan upon request. Feb 2013: the portobello burger was replaced by a housemade veggie burger, which could be made vegan by omitting curry mayonaise. Has daiya cheese. Open Mon-Thu 5:00pm-9:00pm, Fri-Sun 12:00pm-9:00pm.

This place is the best - Edit
Awesome staff!! Great vibe! Vegan wings are a 10, the pastrami spiced ones are the best! Awesome fries, sweet potato fries, great salads just omit the cheese, vegan cheese burger, and the smoked pastrami mushroom sandwich is great. Always excellent!

Had a nice plate of vegan nachos back in July of 2019 and have been itching to go back! Decent food, nice atmosphere.

Great beer, great atmosphere, unsure about the veg food - Edit
I have been to the merchant ale house a few times for drinks, before or/and after having dinner elsewhere, and always enjoyed it. Typically didn’t try their food because the menu is quite meaty and the vegan options are limited and don’t look very attractive to me. Last time I was there, I did try their “smoked mushroom” sandwich and “vegan wings” but these weren’t very nice, so I would still recommend to go elsewhere in the area for vegan food. The vegan nachos are quite nice though, and go well with their excellent beers.

The waitress was very helpful - Edit
At first glance I didn’t see anything that was vegan but after asking the waitress, she gladly let me know all my options. There’s fried pickles, sweet potato fries. The mayo dips are vegan. There’s vegan nachos, a fried tomato dish, a philly style sandwich with sliced seitan, and tacos that can be made with seitan.

Great beer and food - Edit
The beer is delicious here. We got the not so philly cheese steak and shared it and it was plenty of food for two people. My boyfriend liked the cheese sauce more than I did, but it was still good. It seemed like the kind made from carrot and potato as opposed to the kind that’s very artificial.

Great find - Edit
Needed a late night meal and found this place. Lively pub with vegan options. Hubs and I split the veggieball sandwich. Really, really good. Both texture and flavor.

Vegan cheese was a plus! - Edit
It is rare to find a pub /bar that serves so well to vegans. I had No trouble finding food and snacks here at night when there were few options for dinner elsewhere. What a fun atmosphere. They also have music here some nights. I had the vegan quesadilla and it was great, would recommend it for a nice snack or part of your dinner.

Greatest vegan nachos! - Edit
Amazing vegan nachos and additional toppings like guacamole and corn salsa. They have Daiya (and let's be honest, no Vegan nachos would be complete with it). They have a few other vegan options but for someone who is both Vegan and Gluten Free, the nachos are an absolute MUST try

My Favourite Place - Edit
I find myself at the Merch once or twice a week. They have a vegan shwarma which is great. The fried green tomato sandwich is vegan and is delicious! Last time I got vegan nachos and they were fresh, hot and loaded with toppings. Salad dressing is amazing and of course the beer is a must. Service is fast and friendly and they even have tables in the basement for when it is really busy.

It's a bar - Edit
The beer is hit or miss. Sometimes it's enjoyable but most of the time not. The kitchen is down in a dungeon. Just have a look at how clean the bathrooms are and you may get an idea.

Pros: Location
Cons: It's a bar, Ok food, No parking

How is "It's a bar" a con? It's a microbrewery/pub! The beer is not hit or miss at all. Maybe its just your tastebuds. No parking? It's downtown you park wherever you want!!

You can get free samples of beer if you don't want to hit and miss. I don't see why the location of kitchen is a problem since you don't have to work in there. You're a customer, right? If you have claustrophobia, no one is forcing you to go into the kitchen. I doubt you're even allowed. I never noticed any problem with the cleanliness of the bathrooms.

Best brew pub I've been to yet! - Edit
The ataff was stellar, the beer was amazing, and the vegan shwarma was delicious. Cozy, but clean atmosphere, lots of light, and tonnes of character. I'd go back in a heartbeat if I lived in the area and my friend who I went with is going to going back with his partner sometime soon!

Good value and good vegan options - Edit
I've always enjoyed the food here. This is one of the best veg-friendly restaurants in the city. The beer selection is also fantastic for people that are interested in that sort of thing.
Read moreThe new veggie burger is really good, and daiya cheese can be added. It is a slight improvement over the old portebello burger.
The vegan pizza and nachos are fairly good, but the burger is always my first choice.
Overall good food and good prices, and plenty of vegan options. The servers also understand "vegan" and will ensure the message is communicated to the kitchen. I give it the maximum 4 star rating.
Pros: Good veg options, Fair prices, Great veggie burger
